GODFATHER When I was in college, I often wondered what is a Godfather. I understood chacha's, mama's and tauji's, and even very good friends of parents who were like a father, but Godfather - I just couldn't fathom. I looked up the dictionary which defined him as 'one who, at baptism, guarantees a child's religious education.' Very few would qualify for that in India, I thought. I asked many people the meaning of Godfather in India and got the stock answer. 'Godfather is a person who is another father'. Somehow, I could never find a person who I thought was my Godfather. My tau's, chacha's, mama's and uncle's were nice, helpful, affectionate and considerate but for me to consider them to be another father - no. Dharma Vira was my mother's uncle - her chachaji. He was a distinguished I.C.S. officer and very highly respected. Since, he was my father's age, and his son and nephews were nearly my age, I could never get around to calling him nanaji. I called him D.V. uncle. One of D.V. uncle's greatest quality was his helpful nature and humility. He was helpful to whosoever came to him. In 1957-58, he was rehabilitation secretary in government of India. I was in college in Delhi. One of my close Punjabi friends came to me one day and said: "Anil, your uncle is rehabilitation secretary. My uncle, who is a refugee is having some problems in having his claim settled. Can you speak to your uncle? I did and he said : "Get me his particulars." I got the particulars and gave it to D.V. uncle.

DSS November 2, 1999 Cambridge, MA :: It all started on Friday, October 29, when Alex Filippenko of the University of California at Berkeley notified Bob Kirshner at Harvard-Smithsonian that his supernova search project had a good candidate in a relatively nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 1637. Nearby in this case means about 25 million light years from Earth. Wei Dong Li, who is visiting Filippenko's group from the Beijing Astronomical Observatory, called his colleagues in Beijing, who confirmed the supernova, which was given the official name, SN1999em. Kirshner's group at the Smithsonian's Whipple Observatory in Arizona took a spectrum of the object on Saturday. The spectrum showed that the object was a Type II Supernova, an explosion produced by the collapse of the core of a massive star. Kirshner took time off for dinner on Saturday night, then got in touch via e-mail with Harvey Tananbaum, director of the Chandra X-ray Center a little before 11 p.m. "There's a bright supernova in NGC 1637," he said.
