"You know he wasn't always that polite around clients. It even got him in trouble a couple of times." "More than a couple of times," Sonia says. "But I guess he felt sorry for the guy. Instead of dumping him, your dad got to know him a little better. It turns out he was a lonely man who lost his wife a couple years back, and just had too much time and money on his hands. Chicago in Mystery Books Chicago through the words of mystery book writers. ADDED NEW: Harlan Coben

The Last Place
Something strange happened recently. I became hooked on mystery novels... and I began to see our city mentioned over and over again in the books I was reading. I read twelve mystery books, and saw Chicago mentioned in TEN of the twelve. Mind you, I'm not talking about mystery novels set in Chicago, or with characters born in Chicago, or detectives working in Chicago... I'm talking about mystery novels that have absolutely nothing to do with Chicago (except, of course, for that one mention). Below, some of the books in question. (I will be adding more books to the list in the coming weeks, so make sure to keep checking back.) Also, please note that included as part of each link is the excerpt that mentions Chicago, either directly or through Mrs. O'Leary and her cow:

The following revised genealogy of Kwok Kan Kei, our great, great, great grandfather. The family name is normally spelled as "KWOK" in Cantonese, but you will note that some relatives in U.S.A. spelled it as "KWOCK" or "GUORK". By the same token, "CHENG" is spelled as "CHANG" and "LEE" as "LI".
GENEALOGY OF KWOK KAN KEI
1st to 15th Generations: Information for the first fifteen generations is yet to be found. The Kwok family was said to be originated from Fukien Province in the eastern coast of China, across Taiwan, and migrated to Kwangtung Province in the southern coast of China near Macau, as evidenced by the village dialect (Heung Har Wah) which is very similar to the Fukienese dialect. FICTION
    Leonard Chang Square Dancing
At first we thought we were too cool for Square Dancing, too cool to dress up like farmers, wear bandanas, pick out partners, dosey doe, clap our hands, stomp our feet, and we went to these Thursday night dances only because our counselors told us to. Besides, we could all sit on the benches and make fun of the geeks who promenaded their partners round and round. We were just kids, of course, though we thought we held within our minds the keys to adulthood, except we weren't quite sure which locks to try them on. We were twelve, thirteen, around that age when everything we did seemed awkward, uncertain, and those tentative steps through puberty gave us unearned superiority over the ten- and eleven-year-olds. Those babies.
An old couple ran the square dances every week, and had been doing so for over fifteen years. Before them there had been nothing. A cookout. Songs by a campfire perhaps. But once Mr. and Mrs. Bakerson retired from whatever job they had had, they volunteered their talents to the camp, starting a new tradition. Mr. Bakerson, a gnarled, whitened man with a deep, strong voice that seemed not to belong to him, always began the dances with introductions. "This here is my beautiful wife Mary Bakerson," and the blue-haired, nimble Mrs. Bakerson would curtsey, her frilly yellow and pale green dress lightly touching the floor. Mr. Bakerson continued, "And I'm Bob Bakerson, but you all can call me Bob."

During the summer of 2000, Miss Chang makes her Hollywood Bowl debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Leonard Slatkin and tours Australia for the first time, giving concerts with the Sydney Symphony led by Maestro Slatkin as part of the cultural celebrations during the Olympic Games.
