Film Festivals Offer insight Into South Asian Society
by Ashfaque Swapan Special to India-West
For Bay Area South Asian film buffs, the past few weeks have been a particular treat. Films from South Asia had a very strong presence in the 13th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival March 2-9, and in addition UC Berkeley's Center for South Asia Studies in association with South Asian students hosted a retrospective of South Asian films March 10-12. The film festival in San Francisco, sponsored by National Asian American Telecommunications Association , featured over 110 films and videos from 12 countries. For serious South Asian film buffs, the film festival was a Godsend: Viewers had a rare opportunity to see films that fail to make the commercial circuit for obvious reasons. The diverse presentation included an off-beat award winning feature film, English August , based on Upamanyu Chatterjee's novel, and a powerful video documentary on South Asian cab drivers in New York, Taxi-vala/ Auto-biography . (Reviews of both films follow). The screened films and videos are, of course, a world apart from Bollywood potboilers that proliferate in Indian stores

    An Area of Brightness
Indian writers in English are gaining acceptance in the west
as well as in their home country. But how good are they?
    The mystique of oriental experience:
    (clockwise from above) Shoba De,
    Githa Hariharan and Ashok Banker
It all began with Midnight’s Children. Publishers, critics and the writers themselves acknowledge the seminal influence of this one book in triggering off the boom in Indian writing in English. Not only did Salman Rushdie’s masterpiece overwhelm literary circles in the west and win the Booker Prize; its impact on Indian literature in English was also decisive.
"Rushdie’s use of language, the way he appropriated Indian themes and settings, offered routes to post-colonial writers everywhere in the world, specially so in India," says Githa Hariharan whose The Thousand Faces of Night won the Commonwealth Prize for the best first novel three years ago. Adds Pankaj Mishra, author of the best-selling travel-book Butter Chicken in Ludhiana and chief editor of HarperCollins (India), "Midnight’s Children not only inspired many Indians to start writing fiction in English, but also to write in a brave new way."
However, it took some years for the effects of Midnight’s Children to make themselves visible in India. It was published in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that the first of the new crop of novels, Amitav Ghosh’s The Circle of Reason, appeared. The following year came Vikram Seth’s The Golden Gate, that incredible verse-novel which, a fellow writer says, "can only appear once in a century".

Title : Single in the City
    Author : Sunny Singh

All the buzz about women's liberation is no longer just a bare structure. It finally seems to be taking a concrete shape and more so with the advent of such books as is the one under consideration. Single in the City is one such book which draws upon the experiences of single women across the length and breadth of India. The author covers a comprehensive gamut of lives spanning those of the spinsters, divorcees and widows as well. It seeks to act as a guide for single women. The book covers a range of subjects including: "Power, promotions and passions at work-place", "How to ensure safety in the house and on the road", "Being single among couples" and so on. These transcripts also double up as a commentary on the modern urban society in the present day India and as the author states it is "an illuminating read to empower yourself."
Title : Spring in my Backyard
    Author : Debroti Dhar

India's population is incessantly on the rise. Despite the numerous problems that this situation has created, it surely has to offer certain advantages as well. Primary amongst these would be the bag full of talent that is forever there for all to marvel at.

was a cult film. The young Dev Benegal made his debut as director with it. Upamanyu Chatterjee's novel of the same name had been around for some time when Benegal decided he had found just the right story to make a film about an English-educated generation trying to make sense of village India, and the Indian bureaucracy. The film was witty, no doubt, but then much of its irony was lost on urban audiences who sympathised more with its city-smart IAS trainees than with the wretched people they were sent to administer. Benegal has now co-authored Split Wide Open with Upamanyu Chatterjee, who, incidentally, is an IAS man himself. Rahul Bose, who played Agastya, is also back in this film. Split Wide Open hit the theatres on March 30. Dev says it is about "live television, emerging sexuality and the need to talk". Its music is a mix of rock and dance, genres that perhaps reflect the tastes of "the New Age Indian wanting to go places".
