THE LYMAN FAMILY
A Story
"The word 'story' is intended to alert the reader to the fact that, however closely the narrative may fit the facts, the fictional process has been at work." Introduction to "What Am I Doing Here"
by Bruce Chatwin
NOTE: Although Chatwin warns us in his introduction that the fictional process has been at work in this "story," his warning is probably not strong enough.
For whatever his reasons, Chatwin, apparently well-known as a travel writer, has created a story which contains many clear inaccuracies, does not match most published descriptions of life on Fort Hill, and which seems to intentionally cast Mel Lyman and the members of the community in the worst possible light.
I started to annotate the article to show what I mean... but I got fed up before the end. Here's my introductory "annotated Chatwin's Lyman Family"
ST
I have a friend called Jack who has been writing articles on the alternative society for the Boston Globe . Mel Lyman, who is, I believe, a scion of Old Boston, spent time in California as a guitarist. He has returned to his native city where, in the thrall of lysergic acid, he has persuaded himself and the 'Family' that he is Christ.
The Lyman Family publishes a broadsheet called Avatar . It usually contains a photo of the Saviour, with his triangular jaw and crooked grin, floating through the galaxies in the lotus position. Here are some specimens of his prose:

22. With Chatwin A Portrait Of Bruce Chatwin
Jan Morris reviews Suzannah Clap's memoir of bruce chatwin.
http://www.litrev.dircon.co.uk/0197/morris.html
Jan Morris A Good Writer, Of Course, But a Tiresome Man With Chatwin: A Portrait of Bruce Chatwin By Suzannah Clap (Jonathan Cape 224pp £14.99) Somewhere in this well-balanced memoir Susannah Clapp says that Bruce Chatwin could be 'too much' for some people. As a person, he was decidedly too much for me. Snobbism, equally camp and genuine; showy connoisseurship of a quirky kind; the deadly energy of a raconteur; the insensitivity of the tuft-hunter; a gift for mimicry; sexual ambiguity of the Strength Through Joy kind (I can see him now, riding his bicycle blond and bare-backed through Powys, for all the world like a Hitler Youth) - all these characteristics, distilled into one very clever, exuberant and apparently ageless being, made all too rich a mixture for anunsophisticated provincial. But in arte veritas , and it is the strength of this mercifully unostentatious book that Chatwin the writer easily outplays Chatwin the man. Some of his own books turn me off, as he tended to turn me off, but some seem to me to be timeless works of art, in which a fastidious sense of life's limitless fascination makes one forget all the fluff and foolishness. The Viceroy of Ouidah, On the Black Hill, Utz - these three works in particular, in my opinion, will enter the classic canon. 'Fluff and foolishness!' Some of Chatwin's closest friends - and he had heaps of them - will say that this is an impertinent misjudgement of his personality, and perhaps it is. He was the sort of man who invites devotion and resentment, and it was no surprise when, having achieved fulsome fame as a mystery man of literature, he was cruelly maligned after his death. But the more I read Clapp, the more I felt confirmed in my responses. Even his attitude to food, as anecdotally reported here, makes me squirm a bit. 'Que preciosa,' he would apparently exclaim 'before settling down toa nything particularly delicious', and he was once 'excitedly reported to be walking across Eaton Square eating a white truffle'. 'Just after we hadf inished eating, Bruce exclaimed with a sudden recoil: "How dreadful. I've just realised. That was a totally white meal.'"

Among the mass of papers that Chatwin bequeathed to the Bodelian Library just before he died from AIDS in 1989, was a four inch porcelain Toby jug figure, wearing a Homburg hat and green coat and carrying a Gladstone bag. Along the base of the object in brown lettering were the words: I am starting for a long journey. The long journey that encompassed Chatwin's short life receives its first full exposition in this remarkable book. Not only has Shakespeare retraced the maze of Chatwin's globetrotting, he has succeeded in producing a coherent portrait of a man whose history was only available hitherto through his own inventions and embellishments (the efforts of Nicholas Murray and Susannah Clapp notwithstanding). And although this book is pitched as an authorised biography, Shakespeare refuses to pull any punches. If this book proves to be the definitive work on Chatwin (and it is difficult to see from where the competition may emerge), it will also be the book that disposes of much of the nonsense that crystallized into the posthumous Chatwin mystique. For example, the legend of Chatwin's decision to quit Sotheby's at the height of his powers is explained in What Am I Doing Here by a temporary blindness caused by looking too long and hard at works of art. Taking his doctor's advice to 'view some long horizons', Chatwin promptly disappears to the Sudan, discovers himself to be a natural nomad and never looks back. However, Shakespeare offers a more prosaic version of events. Chatwin, it turns out, had always experienced problems with his eyes and, in fact, with his health in general. In addition, he was a notorious hypochondriac who was always accompanied by a regiment of medicines whilst travelling. 'If he described to you a minor epileptic fit and a discharge from the nose,' his doctor relates, 'it took time to realise he was, in fact, only describing a sneeze.' More significantly, Chatwin's departure from Sotheby's coincided with his shock at not being appointed a full member of the Board. At the same time, he seems to have lost out financially in a lucrative but underhand deal involving the disposal of the Pitt-Rivers Collection of African art.

Nicola Gaiarin recensione di:
Nicholas Shakespeare

26. Review | Bruce Chatwin
Nicholas Shakespeare's biography of bruce chatwin reviewed by Jay Currie.
http://www.januarymagazine.com/nonfiction/chatwin.html
Bruce Chatwin By Nicholas Shakespeare Published by The Harvill Press 591 pages, 1999 ISBN: 1860465447 Buy it online The Golden Dilettante Reviewed by Jay Currie Dilettantes have a bad reputation. The idea that there is value in knowing a little about a lot has fallen on hard times. Instead of general knowledge, people are increasingly committed to niches and expertise. For those of us who dislike specialization, Bruce Chatwin was a beacon. Chatwin stands in a long line of eccentrics ranging from Richard Burton and Gertrude Bell on through T.E. Lawrence. Our current crop includes Redmond O'Hanlon, Robert Hughes and, in a very odd way, Gore Vidal. People who combine exploration, scholarship, intelligence and a sense of just how powerful prose can be. Chatwin , Nicholas Shakespeare's wonderfully written new biography, describes a life which had no limits at all. The son of a Birmingham solicitor, Chatwin barely managed to finish at a British private school. He got a job as a "porter" at Sotheby's. That was 1958 and the great boom in Impressionists and antiquities was just about to begin. Chatwin quickly became Sotheby's Impressionist expert and began to hone his prose writing catalog descriptions of the most unlikely objects . Chatwin etched the bones of his writing style describing the loot of Empire.

Bruce Chatwin
Born 13th. May, 1940 in Sheffield, Britain; died 18th. January, 1989 in Nice, France.
British novelist and travel writer. His father was a solicitor in Birmingham. However, he was often away from the family while he sailed with the Navy. Bruce Chatwin was educated at boarding school and at Marlborough. He developed an interest in French painting and he also learned to speak French. In 1958 he joined Sotheby's as a porter in the Works of Art department. One day he saw in the salesroom a watercolour attributed to Picasso and declared it to be a fake. He made rapid progress and developed a reputation for spotting fakes. While still at Sotheby's he wrote his first novel Rotting Fruits , based on the process of securing the estates of collectors. He left Sotheby's in 1966. He started a university course in archeology at Edinburgh but flunked out after two of the four years of the course. He was inspired to travel and made expeditions to Iran and the steppes of Turkestan while supporting himself with journalism. He regarded the nomadic life to be an aspect of the way of life to have been ignored in human history, and he began a book on the nomadic alternative but it was never published. He became a writer with The Sunday Times Magazine , but left after five years to concentrate on his own writing. He quit his job at The Sunday Times with the telegram message: "Have gone to Patagonia".
