The Maker Of This Book Takes His Leave
PROLOGUE
Here begins the Book of the Tales of Canterbury When April with his showers sweet with fruit
The drought of March has pierced unto the root
And bathed each vein with liquor that has power
To generate therein and sire the flower;
When Zephyr also has, with his sweet breath,
Quickened again, in every holt and heath, The tender shoots and buds, and the young sun Into the Ram one half his course has run, And many little birds make melody That sleep through all the night with open eye (So Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage)- Then do folk long to go on pilgrimage, And palmers to go seeking out strange strands, To distant shrines well known in sundry lands. And specially from every shire's end Of England they to Canterbury wend, The holy blessed martyr there to seek Who helped them when they lay so ill and weal Befell that, in that season, on a day

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343-1400)
The greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Chaucer is best known for "The Canterbury Tales" and the contribution to English literature that he made by writing his verses in English instead of Latin which was the norm at the time.
Contrary to what you might expect, Chaucer was recognized during his lifetime and influenced other poets of the 1400s. He was not just a poet. He was a page to Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster, a hostage in France during military action in 1359-60, a diplomat, a customs official, a justice of the peace, knight of the shire in Kent, and served in Parliament for one session in 1386. Three years later, under Richard II, Chaucer was appointed Clerk of the King's Works in charge of construction and renovation. His last official post was as deputy forester of the royal forest of North Petherton, Somerset. He was born in London, married Philippa in his early twenties and had two sons, Lewis and Thomas. He is buried in Westminister Abbey.

Geoffrey Chaucer
Writer England Born
Geoffrey Chaucer was born in London, the son of a wine-merchant. He became a page to the Countess of Ulster, and an esquire in the royal household. When he was captured fighting in France, Edward III paid part of his ransom. He wrote his early poem, 'The Book of the Duchess', for John of Gaunt, to whom he was much later to be connected by marriage.
Chaucer had begun as a writer by translating the opening of 'Le Roman de la Rose', a long allegorical poem of courtly love. His literary perspectives opened further, when on the King's business he visited Italy, and read Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. Besides his languages, he had interests in philosophy, astronomy and science. Among his greater works are 'The Parliament of Fowls' and 'Troilus and Criseyde'.
Chaucer held a succession of public offices in the royal service, eventually moving to Kent, where he was an MP and a Justice of the Peace. In the 1390s he worked on his 'Canterbury Tales', and in 1399 he took a lease on a house in the garden of the Lady Chapel of the Abbey at Westminster. He was buried in the Abbey a year later.

Life and Times Chaucer is mentioned no less than 493 times in contemporary documents, mostly lists of money paid out to people serving the king or other powerful figures. Through them we know many details about his career in royal and government service. The literary works played no apparent part in this public career and there is no indication in the court or public records of his writing activities. Yet there is no serious doubt that in the course of his busy working life, Geoffrey Chaucer found time to translate and write the various works that make him the first recognizable named "author" of England. The many documentary records mean that we can follow his life in far greater detail than, for example, that of Shakespeare. They establish the context in which he moved, although they shed little or no direct light on the works he wrote. Chaucer's father, John Chaucer, occasionally held positions in the royal administration, but he was first and foremost a wine- merchant in London, an important member of the business community. Geoffrey Chaucer's mother's name was Alice. Geoffrey, probably their only son, was born some time around 1340. In 1386 he is noted in a legal record as being '
