When Griet, a sixteen-years-old innocent girl, whose family cannot support her anymore, is hired by the Master's wife to help with the household chores, she knows from the beginning that a hard time is awaiting her. Het eerste verhaal is in het heden gesitueerd waar een leraar een prachtig schilderij in bezit heeft waarvan hij denkt dat het een onbekende Vermeer is, maar het schilderij is in de Tweede Wereldoorlog door zijn vader gestolen van een Joodse, gedeporteerde familie. In de volgende verhalen maak je dan steeds kennis met vorige eigenaren van het schilderij door de eeuwen heen tot aan het moment dat het doek wordt geschilderd. Het laatste verhaal gaat dan over het meisje dat model heeft gestaan. De moeite waard vond ik. Tracy Chevalier: Girl with a pearl earring. Dit gaat ook over een Vermeer, een verhaal over het mogelijke ontstaan van dit schilderij, geschreven vanuit het gezichtpunt van een dienstmeisje van de Vermeers dat model stond voor dit schilderij. Heel ontroerend, mooi geschreven, en een geloofwaardig tijdsbeeld. Deborah Moggach's boek Tulip Fever, gaat dan wel niet over Vermeer maar speelt in het Amsterdam van de 17e eeuw en vertelt het verhaal van een schilder die een portret moet maken van de jonge vrouw van een oudere koopman.
