Intimate and charming
The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier

This is a lovely book from the author of 'Girl With A Pearl Earring' about life in France; it has the intimacy and charm of 'A Year In Provence' without the construction headaches. The book is a mix of history, art, witch-hunts and religion. It is fast-paced, well plotted and will keep you guessing.
Chevalier tells the tale of two women, born centuries apart who are linked through blood and a common history. The book opens with Isabelle du Moulin, a tormented young woman living in seventeenth century France. Isabelle has been nicknamed 'La Rousse', after she was visited by the Virgin Mary and her hair turned red. She is punished because of her faith and shunned by the community. Life becomes even more difficult when her only sister dies during childbirth and her mother is bitten by a wolf and dies, she wonders has she been cursed to a life of loneliness and hardship.
Isabelle becomes pregnant after an ill-fated fling with a local man; she is forced to marry him much to the chagrin of his family, and is never allowed to forget her past. Then political events in France force the family to flee to Switzerland. At first life seems promising, but gradually old problems return and her children suffer at the hands of her cruel husband and his mother. Her youngest daughter Marie disappears, Isabelle is inconsolable and is forced to make a life-changing decision.

Falling Angels A poignant tale of two families brought reluctantly together, Falling Angels is an intimate story of childhood friendships, sexual awakening and human frailty. Yet its epic sweep takes in the changing of a nation, the fight for women's suffrage and the questioning of steadfast beliefs. top of the page Chevalier alternates the narrative point of view to reveal the layered complexities of characters, events, and issues. Which character's perspectives were the most revealing? Which characters do you relate to the most? How does having so many characters affect how you perceive the story? The turn of the century found England in a state of transition. How did the death of Queen Victoria signify a new era, a more modern climate? How do the conflicting opinions on death and mourning define the characters? In what ways do these differing attitudes indicate the social changes to come? How do the issues the female characters face differ with those women are facing now, a century later? What obstacles still exist? How might this story differ if it were set now?

In mid-career, the renowned 17th century Baroque artist Johannes Vermeer painted "Girl with a Pearl Earring," which has been called the Dutch Mona Lisa. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story behind the advent of this famous painting, all the while depicting life in 17th century Delft, a small Dutch city with a burgeoning art community. A Little Background The Baroque period is remembered less by one specific style of art than as a period of time. Derived from the Portuguese "barocco" for "irregular pearl," Baroque was comprised of many diversions from Biblically based Renaissance painting. The Protestant Reformation unleashed artists from rote depictions of scenes from the Bible and allowed them to venture into increasingly more interesting domestic domains. Ladies of the day would pose before silent musical instruments in rooms adorned with the trappings of success, like maps of newly explored territories and shelves with expensive volumes of books. As the merchant class gained monetary status in the community, so did their desire to be painted, just as royalty was just a few decades earlier. top of the page
Do you think Griet was typical of other girls her age? In what ways? How did she differ? Did you find her compassionate or selfish? Giving or judgmental?

Tracy Chevalier
She quit her job. Her car caught on fire. So why was novelist Tracy Chevalier so happy?
"Nothing is written in stone," he was saying. "You can change. You're expected to change. Change is good."
The big change began one morning on top of a double-decker bus that I rode every day to work. I was leafing through the newspaper and came across an article about the MA program in creative writing at the University of East Anglia. It was the first and one of the only graduate programs in creative writing in Britain, and renowned for turning out famous writers.
The decision felt immediate, but it must have been brewing inside me, waiting for the right moment to jump out and give me a big shove. Maybe I had reached the conclusion that I'd rather be my own boss than work for other people.
Maybe I had realized that life is short and I didn't want to spend it doing something that no longer made me happy. Or maybe I had finally heard what the old man on the train tried to tell me: Change is good.

When I got to the studio he was not there. I went straight to the attic. The grinding table was clear -nothing had been laid out for me. I climbed back down the ladder, feeling foolish.
He had come in and was standing in the studio, looking out a window.
Where I would have sat, I thought, if I were to be in the painting.
I gazed at the New Church tower and swallowed. I could feel my jaw tightening and my eyes widening.
I turned my head and looked at him over my left shoulder.
His eyes locked with mine. I could think of nothing except how their grey was like the inside of an oyster shell.
He seemed to be waiting for something. My face began to strain with the fear that I was not giving him what he wanted.

Fiction
ISBN: 0452282152 Read an Excerpt GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING is a thoroughly engaging novel that follows the life-changing experiences of quiet Griet over the two years she serves the Delft painter, Johannes Vermeer. It is hard not to like this good and obedient protagonist, for she struggles with universal yearnings such as love and an escape from poverty. Her life is a fairly solitary one as she finds herself growing apart from her family while living as an outsider in another's home.
The Vermeer family, with the exception of the painter himself, is not fond of the strange Protestant girl; and as Maria Thins, the grandmother, says, "Never so much trouble with a maid before." The real trouble comes, however, when the artist takes a liking to the young girl and allows her to assist him in his work.
Griet is granted the privilege that no other family member has - helping Vermeer in his studio. Not even his wife Catharina is allowed to enter the studio, so this arrangement causes a great deal of tension within the household. Griet begins her work by cleaning the various still life objects that Vermeer will paint later that day. She also is given the responsibility of grinding the paints and even purchasing the colors from the apothecary. As if these "privileges" were not causing enough disquietude within the family, matters only get worse when Vermeer agrees, at a friend's request, to paint Griet.

FALLING ANGELS
Tracy Chevalier

Dutton
Fiction
ISBN: 0525945814 Read an Excerpt
FALLING ANGELS is Tracy Chevalier's long-awaited follow-up to her international bestseller GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING. However, this new title is far from a companion piece to her beloved debut. Kitty's diametrical opposite is Gertrude Waterhouse. Gertrude longs to be more than she is - in short, the proper Victorian lady. She follows manners books, wears all the right things and instructs her two precocious daughters on how to be gentlewomen. Kitty and Gertrude (and their families) are brought together in a chance meeting in a graveyard. The families have abutting plots, and their marked social and cultural differences are immediately recognizable: the Waterhouse's gravestone features a large, romantic, old-fashioned angel, which the Coleman's want removed. Even putting this implausible relationship aside, the children themselves leave a lot to be desired. They are precocious to the extreme and, even allowing for the fact that children in turn-of-the-century times spoke in a way that is unfamiliar to modern ears, their dialogue is stilted and unbelievable. And in Livy, Chevalier has created a real little monster - a spoiled drama-queen who uses all her powers of manipulation against her family, Simon, and the Colemans. Not to say there aren't children like her in the world, but why should we want to read about them?

read more book reviews here Review by: Alyssa Colton The Object as Subject: Girl with a Pearl Earring A Novel by Tracy Chevalier From the story: "Lick your lips, Griet."
I licked my lips.
"Leave your mouth open."
I was so surprised by this request that my mouth remained open of its own will. I blinked back tears. Virtuous women did not open their mouths in paintings.
It is a good thing the painting of its title is depicted on the cover of Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring. You might find yourself, as I did, wanting to look at the painting often. You find yourself compelled to put a face to the girl who comes alive in these pages. The impressive thing about this novel is that at the same time that it is an absorbing, if quiet, story, handled with grace by a gifted writer, it also presents an intersection of two predominant strains in feminist theory. The 'images of women' discourse, which is one of the foundations of scholarly women's studies as we know it today, here marries the issues presented by 'woman as artist.' Not necessarily at odds, these two strains of feminist discourse discuss women as both objects and subjects. Precisely what Chevalier does in this novel is turn the woman-as-object into subject. Ironically, Griet, the girl in the picture, is given an identity through the act of assuming the role of object of the painting. It would be tempting, and utopian, to imagine that Griet is secretly apprenticed by Vermeer and she goes on to make a living as an artist. She does not. She is after all bounded by the constraints of gender and class. Though the fictional Vermeer (only referred to as "he" and "him" in the novel) does give her secret, forbidden tasks, such as mixing paints, Griet always remains a maid, and eventually marries a butcher.

Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier
Tracy Chevalier's Falling Angels chronicals two very different families set amid the social upheaval of the first decade of the twentieth century. Opening on the very day of Queen Victoria's death, the novel, told from myriad points of view, tells a heartbreaking tale of the dichotomy of tradition and progress, custom and novelty. The novel is, foremost, an excellent examination of tradition versus progress, particularly from a female perspective. Its emphasis upon the customs of mourning is distinctly female, marked by subtle degrees and shades of variation. The novel wonderfully describes the circumscribed and sheltered life of many women at the time, as well as some of the terrifying consequences when they stray beyong those bounds (particularly in the case of Kitty Coleman). The two young daughters remain at the center of this struggle, each dealing with it in their own way, growing closer together and further apart over the span of the book. There is, finally, a deep sense of societal progression in the novel, both in the women's movement and in society as a whole. Chevalier's use of multiple points of view only increases the book's emotional texture, allowing us to glimpe events through very different filters. Each narrator has a distinct voice, each weaving into the other with a great level of intensity. As a novel both skillfully crafted and emotionally riveting

Published by Harper Collins, 2000 This well-researched novel is true, in general, to the details of Vermeer' life . Chevalier successfully re-creates the atmosphere of 17th century Delft, raising issues about the class structure and the status of women at that time. Detailed (but never boring) accounts of the artistic process and the life of an artist at the time are provided, as well as of the drudgery which was the housemaid's lot.
Chevalier brings this painting and the other painting described in the book alive for modern readers and a greater appreciation of the artist's work results. The language used and the detailed description afforded to everyday processes force you to read this book slowly, making it a most relaxing read. This book became a bestseller, not through a massive publicity budget but through word of mouth. A most enjoyable read -we at the Book Club will be recommending it to our friends.
