"Anthologizing a Woman's Life" Denise Chong, ed. The Penguin Anthology of Stories by Canadian Women. Viking $35.00 Reviewed by Sarah D. King This collection of thirty-two short stories by and about Canadian women invites readers to recognize and celebrate their own lives through fiction. The narrator of Shirley Faessler's "Lucy and Minnie," a garrulous gambling woman, tells the story of two women and the son who became a husband, and concludes, "I still wish I had an intelligent person to discuss it with." The desire to share stories and seek meanings is integral to this collection.

Gold Mountain is the term used by Chinese Canadians and people of mainland China to refer to North America. It was first used in the nineteeth century to describe the potential wealth in North America from mining gold, business ventures and employment. Emigration to Canada was a result of China's poor economy which coincided with the Fraser River Gold Rush and Cariboo Gold Rush of 1848 and 1862 respectively. Most of the early emigrants came from the Pearl River Delta Region in Southern China between Hong Kong and Canton, and their tales, poems, and songs graphically describe their living conditions and the racial intolerance they endured. Chan Sam had arrived in a western tailored suit. But it had made no difference to his reception; along with the other arriving Chinese, he was herded into a dock-side low brick building to spend three months in quarantine behind barred windows and under guard. Despite their protests that they had already stood naked in a line for examination by the white doctor onboard ship, the men were fumigated with sulfur, and so were their belongings. Inside the packed and filthy "pigpen," as the Chinese called it, amid the noise from trains rumbling into the adjacent western terminus of the transcontinental railway, it had been hard for them to keep fast their belief in Gold Mountain's fairy tales, spun from men before them who had gone to make their fortunes.

Without any additional information, the photograph to the left appears to illustrate two families. Does it depict a case of two wives, or possibly two separate unrelated families? This family photograph is a reflection of the history of early Chinese women (and their lives) in British Columbia. How was life as a merchant's wife, or simply a woman in Vancouver's Chinese community? Imagine what it was like for the children as well. This was a period when Chinatown and similar settlements, small and big, throughout BC were basically bachelor societies. Few women were present because immigration policies were such (see Asians in BC ) that travel (cost of head tax and sea passage) was prohibitive. As well, traditional values dictated that a wife remain with her husband's family (patriarchy) if she was not already living with him in
