THE GIRL IN THE PICTURE:
THE KIM PHUC STORY A book by Denise Chong about
the "Napalm Girl" as she struggled
to reclaim her life.
A review by Marianne Fulton
Vietnam has been at war and in conflicts for most of the past century: Following sporadic combat with China and the French colonial conquest came the Japanese occupation, internal conflict, the French Indochina War, and then, as the Vietnamese term it today, the American War. As in the French war, the early part of the American war in South Vietnam was often fought in the remote Highlands or far south in the Mekong Delta. Villagers living in many parts of the then South Vietnam went on with their lives as small shop owners, street vendors and farmers. But the war moved inexorably into the area and the village of Trang Bang, where the family of Phan Thi Kim Phuc lived. The great achievement of Denise Chong's book "The Girl in the Picture" is starting with the famous photograph: the dreadful result of the South Vietnamese air force dropping napalm near the village pagoda. Thereby burning anonymous children immortalized by photographer Nick Ut. The girl in the photograph now called Kim Phuc would have her life changed forever.

AUTHOR TITLE
(PUBLISH DATE) RATING (OUT OF 10) COMMENTS Allende, Isabel Daughter of Fortune
What a disappointing read. The characters were all over the place, and new ones were introduced near the end, leading to nowhere. For example, why was the character of Lola Montez even mentioned? She appeared on all of a few pages at the end of the book, with absolutely no significance to the story. Was she supposed to be Eliza's long-lost mother? In all, Eliza's long search for Joaquín seemed rather boring; the story had chapters, characters and storylines that could have been totally eliminated to tighten the writing; I was disappointed to find out that John was Eliza's father - I felt that it had literally been included as a last thought. I would have rather read about the developing of an intimate relationship between Eliza and her adoptive mother, Ms. Rose. Music professor Rob Bowman displays the CD box set that won him a Grammy. York University ethnomusicologist Rob Bowman hit a high note in his career on Feb. 28 by winning one of the music industry's most coveted prizes: a Grammy Award. Bowman won the Best Album Notes prize for his 47,000 monograph accompanying the 10-CD boxed set of The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 3: 1972-1975. Bowman co-produced and wrote the liner notes for all three volumes in the Stax Singles reissue series. Comprising a total of 28 CDs, the set contains the releases of the famed Memphis-based recording label which launched artists such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Booker T and the MGs. "Stax Records represents a milestone in the history of American music," Bowman says. "It defined what we now know as Southern Soul music." The first volume, the

Home for the Holidays? Not This Year for Whitman Students
WALLA WALLA, Wash. New Yorker Robert Anderson and his "Millennium" expedition hope to add to the lore of Mt. Everest later this month by reaching the 29,028-foot summit in time to celebrate the dawning of a new year. Meanwhile, a small group of adventuresome Whitman College students are setting their sights only slightly lower than Anderson and his rare winter attempt to scale Everest's north face. Rather than spend the holidays at home with family and friends, the nine Whitman students leave Seattle, Wash., for Nepal this Saturday, Dec. 18, for a month-long trekking exploration they hope will take them as high as the desolate Everest Base Camp at 17,500 feet, just below the imposing Khumbu Icefall. Geoff Kunz , a senior geology major and outdoor enthusiast from Seattle , looks forward to the challenge of reaching the base camp. Even with the help of Sherpa guides and their yaks, however, reaching that goal will depend on the severity of the weather and how well each of the students acclimates to the higher altitudes and possible onset of altitude sickness. "For me, reaching the base camp would be huge," Kunz admits. "I've heard so many stories and read so many books about climbing Everest. It would great to make it as far as the base camp." David Prins , a freshman from Snohomish, Wash.
