Chopin, Kate O'Flaherty [sh O
Pronunciation Key
Chopin, Kate O'Flaherty , American author, b. St. Louis. Of Creole-Irish descent, she married (1870) a Louisiana businessman and lived with him in Natchitoches parish and New Orleans. In these places she acquired an intimate knowledge of Creole and Cajun life, upon which she was to draw in many of her stories. After her husband's death in 1883, she returned with their six children to St. Louis and there began to write. Two collections of tales, Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897), earned her a reputation as a local colorist, but her novel The Awakening (1899) caused a storm of criticism because of its treatment of feminine sexuality. In depicting objectively a woman's confused groping toward self-understanding and self-acceptance, Chopin seemed to threaten the mores of her time although she did not explicitly attack them. Largely ignored for the next 60 years, her work is now praised for its literary merit as well as for its remarkable independence of mind and feeling. See her complete works, edited by P. Seyersted (2 vol., 1969); T. Bonner, Jr.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin A Webquest by Gena DeLuigi
Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening is a provocative account of one woman's quest for freedom in her restrictive environment. Her decisions challenge the social norm, defy conventional family roles, and disrupt her community's "safety". As you read about Edna Pontellier, decide for yourself whether she was courageous or mentally disturbed; an inspiration or a threat to society.
    The Task
Edna Pontellier is considered a dangerous rebel! Her scandalous behavior has been deemed immoral and unfit by New Orleans society. It is feared that her negative influence will be the downfall of women everywhere unless she is stopped. Her trial begins four weeks from today and you will be a member of the jury. As the trial progresses you must collect facts to either vote against her behavior or to support her actions. But be careful, your decision may affect your own standing in society! During the trial you must visit several places to collect information so that you may form an educated opinion. Unfortunately, jury duty restricts your freedom and these visits must be done on the laptop provided in the hotel room you are staying in. You have a room booked at a hotel called A Creole House where you will conduct your research.

Kate Chopin BIO ARTICLE Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis in 1851. She married Oscar Chopin in 1870, and moved to New Orleans where he managed a general store. Over the next nine years they had six children. When his business failed, the Chopin family moved to Cloutierville, Louisiana. When he died of swamp fever in 1882, Kate Chopin began writing in order to support herself and her six children.
From the beginning, the subjects of her short stories were unconventional women. In "Wiser Than a God," the protagonist, Paula Von Stoltz rejects her suitor's offer of marriage because, she says, "it doesn't enter into the purpose of my life."
In one of her most famous stories, "A Point At Issue," Eleanor and Charles decide to marry, but under very unusual circumstances.
