The plausible and the implausible in Carolyn Chute's Snow Man
By Sandy English
3 December 1999 Back to screen version Snow Man Carolyn Chute published her first novel, The Beans of Egypt, Maine in 1985, and its sequel, Letourneau's Used Auto Parts , in 1988. These were important novels: it seemed that without any sentimentality whatsoever, Chute was able to depict the concerns for love and happiness of the working poor at a particular time (the Reagan/Bush years) and place (rural Maine). The novels told about families of all sorts, stable and decaying ones, families made up of two people and families that stretched the biological definition of the term. The pinch of poverty and denial could be felt everywhere in these books, and the strain on the emotions under it. Chute played with the wicked variety of life among a group of people that readers hardly ever read about. These first novels of Chute's flowed unabashedly and honestly from her own life. There was unquestionably a spontaneous relation of the author to the material. As she said at the time of publication of The Beans of Egypt, Maine

Boone, North Carolina 28608 Nov. 1, 1999 Visiting Writers Series: Novelist Carolyn Chute BOONECarolyn Chute quickly rose to fame in literary circles following the publication of her best-selling novel "The Beans of Egypt, Maine." The critics’ harsh reviews of the best seller nagged Chute though she wrote other well-received novels. "She felt the book had literally been taken from her and published before she was actually finished with it," said Appalachian State University English professor and "Appalachian Journal" editor Jerry Williamson. "So she published a second, ‘finished’ version of Beans which is indeed better and solves some of the moral dilemmas that some critics got hung up on in 1985." Chute will read from her works and answer questions about critics, best sellers and revisions Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Linville Falls Room of the Plemmons Student Union. Book sales and signing will follow. Chute will also hold a question and answer session Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in room 302 Sanford Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Visitor parking tags are available for the afternoon event at the traffic office on Rivers Street.

by Carolyn Chute
he Beans of Egypt, Maine "A startling and original first novel....They are endlessly slamming doors, dropping food in their beards, moaning, stomping, snorting and unzipping...but they are neither villains nor buffoons." -New York Times Book Review There are families like the Beans all over America. They live on the wrong side of town in mobile homes strung with Christmas lights all year around. The women are often pregnant, the men drunk and just out of jail, and the children too numerous to count, In The Beans of Egypt, Maine, we meet the God-fearing Earlene Pomerleau and experience her obsession for the whole swarming Bean tribe. There's Cousin Rubie, a boozer and a brawler, tall Aunt Roberta, the earth mother surrounded by countless, clinging babies, and Beal, sensitive, often gentle, but doomed by the violence within him. Selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club "A story of America's rural underclass...An authentic, powerful voice from a natural writer."

In this class we will be examining racialized identities in general rather than simply black and white, attempting to challenge our simplistic categorization of race in America. Race, as Robert T. Carter notes, is a social and political reality: "Decisions about whom to marry and date, where to live, where to go to school, what is taught, how to move about in one’s community and surrounding area, where to shop, for whom to vote, and what occupations to pursue are all consciously or unconsciously influenced to racial considerations" (206). The course will focus very deliberately on whiteness since whiteness is usually considered an "invisible" racial identity. As the recently published collection Displacing Whiteness insists, whiteness as a racial marker has been inadequately examined. Critical examinations of whiteness, however, offer "a ground not only for the examination of white selves...but also for the excavation of the foundations of all racial and cultural positionings" (Frankenberg 2). By asking how whiteness is performed by subjects, such research tries to illustrate that whiteness is "not a static, universal 'thing,' but is instead "always constructed, always in the process of being made and unmade" (Frankenberg 16). The class will explore these ideas in recent novels, short stories, films, and popular culture, asking such questions as : What is race? How do we define racial identity? How is our understanding of race influenced by history? By stereotypes? By mass media? How is whiteness performed by subjects in daily life, in film, in literature? Is race an essential category or is it socially constructed?

The Dancing Sausage Web Journal
Strunk-and-White-enabled. Main October 11, 2000 Carolyn Chute Has A Posse Today while I was stitting in a meeting of New York's IMC Print team, one of our geeks wandered over and slipped a xeroxed booklet into my hands. This is something my friend over there produced, she said to the few loose tendrils of my attention; it may not mesh with your politics but I think you'll like it. I flipped through the 'zine distractedly, unable to focus on the xerox-eroded photographs and the print team's plans at the same time. I didn't realize what I'd been handed until I closed the 'zine again and noticed that a handwritten caption on the cover identified the woman shown there with a flag and a bandanna-tied head as Carolyn Chute. Then I zeroed in on the title: "Carolyn's Chuting Edge: The 2nd Maine Militia Goes To Philly." Carolyn Chute, author of The Beans of Egypt, Maine (Alibris callously lists its subject matter as Fiction Poverty), has apparently formed her own militia, or maybe two of them. By various accounts they are called the "Second Maine," "Wicked Good," or "Border Mountain" Militias. I went to check up on this story, and found these two articles Chute apparently marched mere yards away from me at the Unity 2000 protests at the Republican National Convention this year in Philly. I never knew. No fanfare announced her. The woman who brought the 'zine to the IMC says Chute was supposed to speak at the rally, but the stage-hands snubbed her.
