Fiction
ISBN: 0156011409
"It ain't left or right. It's up and down. You're either up or you're down. That's all there is to it. OK?"
SNOW MAN is a study of the militia movement in modern America, in microcosm. In the author's Foreword, she explains this book as the "DNA" of a larger and lengthier upcoming novel. SNOW MAN is a novel marked by a short, clipped sentence structure; short, choppy words and minuscule chapters rush the book to its conclusion.
Kristy Creighton arrives at her parents' vintage home in Boston to reflect upon her life as an unmarried member of collegiate academia. What she discovers in the stable is a reality that clashes with her entire political upbringing. A gravely wounded Robert Drummond, member of the revolutionist militia movement, is hiding in the building. He has just murdered Senator Kip Davies, and Kristy's father, also a Senator, is next on his list. When Connie Creighton, Kristy's artist mother, comes home to a bizarre scene - a critically wounded fugitive being doctored by a local veterinarian and cared for by her own daughter - her penchant for the extraordinary soon entangles her in this desperate situation.

Interesting writer. I just read her "The Beans of Egypt, Maine"
from
http://www.salon.com/08/features/maine2.html

quote:
Carolyn Chute, at age 49, isn't running for anything, nor is her "Wicked Good Militia," as she likes to call it, backing any candidates. But this shy, genial woman, dressed as usual in a frumpy skirt, mud boots and bandana, seems committed to reminding voters that the real divide in American politics isn't Left vs. Right it's Up vs. Down. Chute likens the grim American economic climate to a "burning house," and worries that too many people have quit trying to run rescue missions, instead standing off to the side talking about tangential issues: "gay rights, guns, welfare mums, and drugs."
Anyone else read her? What do you think?

Storming the wall
In the streets of Quebec, activists braved tear gas, threw rocks, and fought police to protest globalization at the Summit of the Americas BY LANCE TAPLEY
JACKMAN, MAINE — THIS past Friday, I drove to the Border Riders Snowmobile Clubhouse near the Canadian border to hang out with Carolyn Chute, founder of the Second Maine Militia, also known as the Wicked Good Militia. Chute is probably best known as the author of The Beans of Egypt, Maine , but her last book, Snowman , concerns a man who joins a militia. Its seeming advocacy of violence created a stir in literary circles. The brouhaha did little to deter Chute from pursuing her burgeoning interest in activism. She’s run the gamut from lobbying at the State House to holding teach-ins about corporate power for people in backwoods Maine. Shortly before the summit of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, she sent out an advisory to her militia associates inviting folks up to Jackman to rally. There was snow, but no snowmobiles. The Maine Global Action Network (MEGAN) had moved in and set up a hospitality center for border crossers on the trail to Quebec City, where an elite gang of pan-American free traders had holed up in " old town. " That day’s edition of the

New pamphlet on Cuba.......
Dedicated to Carolyn Chute
"Cuba's Continuing Struggle: In the Shadow of Goliath" "But there are all these incidents, all these excuses
for going to war when actually there are deep-seated reasons,
and there was a deep-seated reason
in the case of what the United States wanted in Cuba [in 1898].
We didn't want the rebels to win this revolution in Cuba
any more than we wanted the Vietnamese
to throw out the French and run their own country.
We wanted to be in on it."
Howard Zinn Let Cuba Live is enthusiastic about the publication in March 2002 of "Cuba's Continuing Struggle: In the Shadow of Goliath" This pamphlet contains articles by Howard Zinn, Lucius Walker, and Tom Whitney. The Public Interest Forum of Norway, Maine, published the pamphlet. It is available for $5 (or for 20 or more, $4 per). The publication is dedicated to Maine writer Carolyn Chute; proceeds will be applied to a medical fund set up on her behalf. Contents: 1. "The History of U.S. Expansion: The Example of Cuba," a talk by Howard Zinn on the history of U.S.-Cuba relations 2. "Cuban Independence and Social Revolution," by W.T. Whitney, Jr.

GRASSROOTS
ART IMITATES POLITICS:
CHUTE AND KUBIAK GET REEL
By Jess Kilby There have been documentary films made about political campaigns before (The War Room, for example). There have been Hollywood productions that ape the process and its inherent moral ambiguity ( Bulworth, The Candidate). But rarely (if ever) has a docu-drama been made about a real political campaign that was initiated for the sole purpose of making a movie about a political campaign. In short: Carolyn Chute is running for governor. This isn't exactly breaking news - hell, the Waterboro Public Library makes note of it on their website, and DC's Political Report dutifully lists Chute amongst the rest of the third-party candidates in Maine's 2002 gubernatorial race (following "pastor Steven Farssaci" [sic] as "author/militia member Carolyn Chute" and linking to a quaint 1996 Salon article for more information, rather than to an official campaign site.) What's news (or at least new) is the fact that Chute has a running mate, in fellow anti-corporate activist David Kubiak. And that the two are making a movie called Countercoup about their run as co-candidates for the highest office in the state, with (among other activities) mock town meetings in each county where residents will be asked to "pretend" to talk about their concerns for a common future. The whole thing is a bit tongue-in-cheek, you see - in that semi-serious, populist way for which Chute and Kubiak are known. As Kubiak explains via email, "all events are staged for the movie, but attract 'real' citizens, 'real' journalists, and 'real' public attention to [the campaign] issues (e.g., the corporate coup d'état in Augusta and Washington, the corporate takeover of our mass media, and Maine's urgent need to secede from Corporate America's political control)." Chute and Kubiak will be attempting to collect enough signatures and $5 donations to qualify for Clean Election money, the better to "add more realism to the 'film.'

Sunday, March 17, 2002 WRITING TO HER HEART'S CONTENT
By JOANNE LANNIN, Portland Press Herald Writer Maine's most colorful and, some would argue, most brilliant author is terrified that her popularity has run its course and that she will never be published again. In her darker moments, she fears she will end up like the most desperate and downtrodden of the characters she has written about for the past two decades. "We were very poor before 'Beans.' We were wearing rags," says Chute of the years before her successful first novel, "The Beans of Egypt, Maine," was published in 1984. "Now, we're slowly sliding back to that." In the 17 years since Chute's first novel, "The Beans of Egypt, Maine" gained her comparisons to Steinbeck and Faulkner, Chute has become an earnest, outspoken advocate for the working poor, whose lives she depicts so vividly in her novels. Lately, in part because of the political plot of her last book, her reputation has suffered to the point where she feels it is making it difficult to get her new book into print. "It really matters what reviewers think of your books these days," says Chute, who has compared the national media to the geese she used to own. "Once one starts honking, they all do."
