Snow Job
By Sarah Schulman Snow Man , by Carolyn Chute (Harcourt Brace), 242 pages, $23. In Snow Man , Carolyn Chute advocates for a constituency rarely represented in literary novels. Her hero, Robert Drummond, is a white, working-class militia member with a swastika tattoo. Pro-gun above all else, Drummond has just assassinated US Senator Kip Davies and has fallen, wounded, into the protective arms of Kristy Creighton, the daughter of another senator, an Edward Kennedy-type liberal from Massachusetts. Even though Kristy, a Radcliffe graduate, grew up in a big house with live-in servants, she can't help but fall in love with the proletarian Robert. For despite their many differences, he is the first man she has ever seen with a "long, uncircumcised penis," a detail the author mentions repeatedly and clearly considers a major plot point. Oh, and she is also motivated by her opposition to the death penalty, which surely awaits him once he is arrested. Chute, who herself belongs to what she describes as a "no-wing" militia group, is careful in her author's note to explain that this is not a left-wing or a right-wing book, but a book about class as Drummond says, "You're either up or you're down . That's all there is to it." And in her presentation of class issues, Chute is swimming upstream against the literary establishment. Fiction by and about the wealthy is flooding the market these days. Dominant cultural institutions that support literary writing, such as the

_Fanny BURLOCK m 1844 INDEX Wilbur is listed under both Rebecca and a possibly "2nd mother", Agnes Farris. It's interesting to note, that, under Rebecca, Wilbur's middle name is Springer, but, on the record with Agnes, no middle name was listed. I'm suspecting that Agnes was a wife, SHORTLY after Rebecca's passing (or divorce), and due to the proximity of dates, elsewhere, the "powers-that-be" saw fit to assign Agnes as Wilbur's mother (this is JUST a theory). I'm adding Wilbur to both mothers, just to be on the safe side. This note will suffice as explanation, in the interim. HOME HTML created by GED2HTML v3.6-WIN95 (Jan 18 2000)

Verb Tense Consistency Directions: The following paragraphs (in blue font ) are taken from Carolyn Chute's novel The Beans of Egypt, Maine. Chute's novel maintains a striking immediacy through her unusual and consistent use of the present tense; things happen in a kind of perpetual now . When you click "The Beans" button below, the text will reappear in the text area. Select the present tense verbs (by double-clicking them) and change them into past tense verb, using ALL CAPS. Don't change tenses within quoted language and be careful not to change the form of verb forms that are not actually verbs. The second text area will reveal our version of this exercise when you click on "Grammar's Version." When you've finished changing all the verbs, consider how the text has changed. What have you lost (or gained) by changing the verbs? What verbs didn't you change, and why not? He moves up the mountain like a packhorse, crunching many small sticks and branches underfoot. She rides on his shoulders like a child. She wears a child-sized summer dress, and her bare legs are almost lost in his beard. Her hair is almost a fluorescent yellow. She is still very bony, very white, very silent. She smells of her morning bath.
On the mountains are countless birches: gray, gold, and the white, some of the young ones bending from last winter's pitiless snows. There is not much shade here. Birds scream from all directions.

    Associated Press Writer
Associated Press Author Carolyn Chute with her dog, Margaret, and her husband, Michael, stand at the end of their driveway in front of a clothes line that displays various messages intended to keep the public away.
Since then, the novel has languished for nearly five more years in publishing limbo, leaving the author wondering whether a work of such epic scale will ever find its way into print.
Now, Chute and her agent are exploring the idea of speeding up publication by breaking the novel into a trilogy and seeking a new publisher. She expects to have the first book ready within days and the two others in a matter of months.
The long delays have taken their toll. Chute battled periods of depression, worrying that she and her husband were sinking into the grinding poverty she wrote about in her signature first novel, The Beans of Egypt, Maine.

The Snowman by Carolyn Chute Reviewed by Kenny Brechner The Prince La Fireez once remarked, "for my part, I had as lief have this musk-million on my shoulders as a head so blockish as to want ambition." A want of ambition is most assuredly not a flaw encumbering Maine novelist Carolyn Chute. Her last book, Merry Men was a mountain of a book, a mountain which, for the most part, Mohammed declined to visit. With Snow Man the author has followed the advice of the proverb. The mountain has been slimmed down and put through some aerobic training. The mountain, that is to say, comes to Mohammed. The role of the mountain is played by Robert Daniel Drummond, a member of the fictitious Maine Militia, The Snowmen. Robert assassinates senator Kip Davies execution style and, though wounded in the shoulder, finds his way to the home of his next intended victim Senator Creighton. Once there he collapses and passes out on the floor. One might have expected the Creighton family to react similarly to Bertram Wooster who, when asked by a revolutionary, "Do you yearn for the Revolution," replied, "Well, I don't know that I exactly yearn. I mean to say as far as I can make out, the whole hub of the scheme seems to be to massacre coves like me." The Creightons however are made of sterner stuff. In point of fact the Creightons are loathe to rush to a judgement. The caretaker Art Berry sagely points out that, "This...is...somethin' we gotta think about. Right?" Right. Upon due consideration, and since the liberal Senator, who is out of town, is against capital punishment, they decide to get the killer some medical attention. Inspired, perhaps, by having watched Horsefeathers recently, they hit upon the idea of bringing a veterinarian in. The vet obliges and the Snow Man's stay in the Creighton household has begun.

Although Gardiner is a tiny community of 6,746 people, the library ranks 9th among the top circulating public libraries in Maine. Suggestions by celebrities help. This is the 8th year that we have asked noted people to recommend their favorite books for the "Who Reads What?" list. The library now offers this list free, to help promote reading world wide. Our 1995 celebrity recommendations range from classic authors like Charles Dickens and old time popular authors like Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jack London to the newest and most controversial writersa myriad of wonderful works. Whether you are a "print freak" like Charlton Heston, wish to get "lost in a good book" like Bill Gates, or are looking for books to "help you navigate," as Carolyn Chute says, you'll find something to your taste in this year's "Who Reads What?"
