arcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.) was both a Roman orator and statesman. His extensive philosophical interest led him to author several classic philosophical works like "De Oratore" (Hiz 113). Although he was often criticized for lack of originality, few could deny his superiority in rhetoric. Cicero's philosophical writings demonstrate a "fairly coherent and modestly original system of thought" (Hiz 113). At the least, Cicero acquired a foundation for his views from the Academy. The Academy stood for free inquiry and the search for truth or at least what would be considered the most predictable opinion (Clarke 55).
Rhetoric and Philosophy
Cicero felt that the Greeks had already exhausted the possible methods for the pursuit of truth. The originality of his ideas lies in their combination and not their components. Although historians have creditted Socrates with the union of philosophy and rhetoric, Cicero credits the alliance of these arts to the previous followers of rhetorical sophism . In contrast to Socrates, Cicero believed more emphasis should be put on the rhetorical aspect and not the philosophical aspect of sophism(Siegal 12). Cicero believed that the productive application of knowledge for the guidance of human affairs was the greatest of human accomplishments. Philosophy generated knowledge but rhetorical persuasion made it effective. Each was dependent upon the other. They could not stand alone. A great man would be the master of both.

M. Tulli Ciceronis BRUTUS

32. Introduction To James G's Game Of Transylvania Chronicles

Welcome... I am your host Cicero Rex
I have been forced to live in Transylvania since 1314. I have been many things: a brigand, a murderer, an outlaw, a Prince, a scholar; and I have seen many things. All this I will try to set down here. Let me by your guide to this peculiar part of hell... Firstly no doubt you are interested in the Princes of the Northern Cities as we once termed ourselves. We grew out of the Council of Ashes however and some of the members of that rump body caused us some concern. In addition to the official rulers I have encountered any number of usurpers and vipers who cluster round the powerful. If you are not concerned with politics and its players though perhaps you wish to take a tour of Transylvania and the Seven Cities . let me be your guide... Or perhaps it is I who you are interested in or the lives of my Childer. While my relationships with my Childer have often been awkward ones I have cared for them all deeply and often on these lonely latter nights wish they were here to comfort and advise me in my against the sinster Saulot. Recently a piece of "lost property" was discovered behind the Iron Curtain. In addition to being a breach of the Masquerade it also has some sentimental value. If any of the younger generation would do me the favour of returning it I'm sure I can discover some appropriate reward.

Historically, my paintings have been abstractions inspired by the landscape. The multi-planed layers of color, distance and dimension have been a mainstay in my work and continue even as the paintings evolve toward more three dimensionality. The painterly illusions now incorporate photographs, sketches, copper foil, gold leaf, wooden skewers, stitching and the like, transforming the canvas into a low relief object formed by personal metaphors and inferences. Compositionally, the works are more iconographic and ceremonial constructs, with allusions to a personal language of thoughts and recollections.
As I reflect on parts of my personal history - living as a child in Japan and Europe, being raised in a strict Catholic home, my rite of passage as a Marine in Vietnam - all the pieces are emerging in my consciousness and creative life. I find the iconic, frontal, ceremonial constructs and metaphors are speaking to me in a less illusionistic tongue and in a more concrete language.
