Motivation in Cisneros's "Never Marry a Mexican"
A Historical-Biographical Critical Approach
1999, Skylar Hamilton Burris Note: This is an academic exercise that takes a historical / biographical critical approach to Sandra Cisneros’s short story, "Never Marry a Mexican." This is not intended to be a well-developed critical paper, but it should prove a useful tool for examining one aspect In "Never Marry a Mexican," the narrator, Clemencia, admits that she is "vindictive and cruel" (68). But the critic must explain why. The critic also needs to address Clemencia's motivation for fleeing her middle-class home, because it is by no means clear that she was prohibited from living there. A look at Sandra Cisneros's own life and words can help elucidated both of these questions. Sandra Cisneros shares with her narrator a sort of "schizophrenia" that develops from "straddling two" cultures (Aranda 66). Clemencia, as a Mexican-American, witnesses her latino culture mixing with anglo culture, and she herself engages in miscegenation with Drew. She is motivated by a fear of anglicanization that expresses itself in her decision to move to the barrio and in her vindictive treatment of Drew's wife. The latino and anglo cultures mix when Clemencia's mother marries a white man. Clemencia reacts by fleeing from her home and attempting to cling to her latino culture. Sandra Cisneros describes her own hatred for the term "Hispanic" by declaring that it is an "upwardly mobile type word" (

Previous Entry: 10/27/02 ... Next Entry: 10/28/02 Posted at 05:06 PM PST: "Tomales Point, Sandra Cisneros, Sophie's Party" Full day yesterday! In the morning, Wendy, Lilli and I drove up to Point Reyes to hike the Tomales Point trail (just over 7 miles), which is supposedly the best place in Northern California to see wildlife. We did see a few herds of elk (complete with protective large alpha male), numerous raptors, and half of a dead bunny rabbit. Unfortunately, all of the vegetation was dried and dead, but I imagine that it would have been beautiful in the late Spring.

Elk, on the trail (Point Reyes) When we returned from the hike, we rushed over to a Sandra Cisneros reading. She was very funny (made us all laugh, often) and shared honest and insightful ideas on how the creative process works (for her). I felt like I should be taking notes. She was really cool.

  • "Caramelo" by Sandra Cisneros Sandra Cisneros is the author of "The House on Mango Street." Internationally acclaimed for her poetry and fiction, she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lannan Literary Award and the American Book Award, and of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the MacArthur Foundation. Her new novel, "Caramelo," is a multigenerational story of a Mexican-American family whose voices create a dazzling weave of humor, passion and poignancy. Lala Reyes' grandmother is descended from a family of renowned rebozo, or shawl, makers. The striped caramelo rebozo is the most beautiful of all, and the one that makes its way, like the family history it has come to represent, into Lala's possession.

    CONVERSATION: CISNEROS
    October 15, 2002
Ray Suarez speaks with writer Sandra Cisneros about her new book, Caramelo , which follows the tale of a Mexican-American family over multiple generations.
RAY SUAREZ: The book is Caramelo , the author is Sandra Cisneros, an award-winning poet and writer. This is her second novel. It's the story of the three Reyes brothers, of a family, like many Mexican families, with members and memories made on both sides of the U.S. border. The story of family lore and tradition is told from the perspective of one of the grandchildren, the young Lala Reyes. Sandra Cisneros, welcome. SANDRA CISNEROS: Thank you. RAY SUAREZ: A lot of years went into this book. SANDRA CISNEROS: That's right. ( Laughs ) RAY SUAREZ: What, about nine, ten? SANDRA CISNEROS: Nine. Nine, yeah. RAY SUAREZ: And this is one family's history, but there's also a lot of Mexican history in there. SANDRA CISNEROS: Yeah. You know, I didn't think I was going to be writing a history book, I thought I was writing a story about my father, based on my father's life. But in telling my father's story, I had to place him in time and history, and then I had to go back and look at how he became who he was. So I had to invent my grandmother's story and how she became who she was, so next thing I knew, there was a lot of tributaries from my main story, and footnotes, chronologies, and things like that, that I didn't anticipate when I began.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students generally find reading Cisneros a delightful experience. The brevity and humor of her stories help make them accessible even to those unfamiliar with the Mexican-American culture in which much of her writing is set. In fact, one of my colleagues taught Cisneros very successfully to students in Galway, Ireland. One potential source of discomfort for students is Cisneros's manifestly feminist sensibility. Some students may accuse her (as they would accuse virtually any other feminist writer) of "man-bashing." When this issue comes up, I point out that, ironically, defining feminism in that way makes men the center of attention. Then I encourage students to talk about what they think feminism means and/or should mean. Sometimes students with more sophisticated definitions of feminism can convince their peers that feminism does not reduce to man-hating; in any case, giving the students a forum for talking through the issue is usually productive since it is one about which they will probably have strong (if unexamined and unarticulated) opinions. The feminism of women of color, however, is complicated by ethnic identification. Some students will be assuming that ethnic authors should offer only "positive" images of minoritieswhich means, in effect, talking about sexism in minority communities is off-limits. I encourage students to interrogate their assumptions about ethnic authors' "duties." At the same time, I acknowledge that being both a woman of color and a feminist can be a difficult task since one of the stereotypes of Latino men (and non-white men generally) is that "they treat their women badly." Then I try to turn students' attention back to the text to see if they can find evidence that some tension between ethnic and gender identity is shaping the narrative.

Cisneros brings to the novel the same terse style that distinguished her acclaimed novella, The House on Mango Street . With a little editing and some subtle changes, Caramelo could have been a classic almost on par with The House on Mango Street . As is, however, the novel falls painfully short. Caramelo Cisneros echoes some of her Latin American predecessors, recalling Borges in her narrators' altering of the truth and concluding the novel with a heavy dose of magical realism. She has trouble incorporating these styles into her narrative, however; the warping of reality is ineffectively executed and the stab at magical realism seems extraneous.

My Name In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting. It is like the number nine. A muddy color. It is the Mexican records my father plays on Sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing. It was my great-grandmother's name and now it is mine. She was a horse woman too, born like me in the Chinese year of the horsewhich is supposed to be bad luck if you're born female-but I think this is a Chinese lie because the Chinese, like the Mexicans, don't like their women strong. My great-grandmother. I would've liked to have known her, a wild, horse of a woman, so wild she wouldn't marry. Until my great-grandfather threw a sack over her head and carried her off. Just like that, as if she were a fancy chandelier. That's the way he did it. And the story goes she never forgave him. She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow. I wonder if she made the best with what she got or was she sorry because she couldn't be all the things she wanted to be. Esperanza. I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window. At school they say my name funny as if the syllables were made out of tin and hurt the roof of your mouth. But in Spanish my name is made out of a softer something, like silver, not quite as thick as sister's name Magdalenawhich is uglier than mine. Magdalena who at least- -can come home and become Nenny. But I am always Esperanza. would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me, the one nobody sees. Esperanza as Lisandra or Maritza or Zeze the X. Yes. Something like Zeze the X will do.
