Lee and Mary K. Clark Nestled at the base of the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona lies a small community where there are almost as many hummingbird feeders as residents. For some of the people of Portal, maintaining the feeders is a major part of their daily ro utine. Over 13 kinds of hummingbirds have been documented from the area. Residents not only know who has which species visiting their feeders, but they also know what time of day the rarer individuals show up. Some 15 years ago, something began draining the bird feeders at night. Speculation about who the culprits were ran from ring-tailed cats to raccoons, but people who stayed up to watch their feeders quickly discovered that the night visitors were bats. Emotions were mixed among those who had set out the food for hummingbirds. Some wanted to discourage the bat freeloaders and started filling their feeders only in the morning. Others, fascinated by the nectivorous bats, repositioned feeders near porch lig hts so they could better observe their nocturnal guests. The people of Portal soon learned the phenomenon was not unique to their community. In the Huachuca Mountains, the range to the west of the Chiricahuas, nectar-feeding bats had also been coming to hummingbird feeders at the Nature Conservancy's Mile-Hi Reserve in Ramsey Canyon since 1978, the same year they were reported in Portal. Residents of both areas now regularly observe bats at feeders during the warmer months. Dr. E.L. Cockrum, a professor at the University of Arizona, has also documented similar visitations in the Santa Rita Mountains and at several other locations.

format this article to print CLARK, RANDOLPH LEE (1871-1941). Randolph Lee Clark, teacher and school administrator, was born to Randolph and Ellen (Lee) Clark in Fort Worth, Texas, on June 3, 1871. His father, a Confederate veteran and minister in the Disciples of Christ, cofounded Add-Ran College, a forerunner of Texas Christian University, at Thorp Spring in 1873. Clark, who in his youth sometimes worked as a cowboy on the XIT Ranch, qv received the B.A. degree between 1890 and 1895 from Add-Ran. In 1895 he began his teaching career. He entered the University of Chicago in 1897 but apparently earned no degree. Clark married Leoti Sypert in Holland, Texas, on December 18, 1898. The couple eventually had nine children. He also established Wichita Falls Junior College, which eventually grew into Midwestern University, qv in 1922. He planned and won adoption of the junior college as a part of the local public school system. Clark believed that the new institution would provide inexpensive basic education, thereby reducing expenses for the parents of college-bound students and preparing those students for more advanced college work or for entrance into a profession. His leadership secured approval of an $850,000 bond issue to finance the construction of a junior-college building in 1922. The first classes met in this structure on May 5, 1924. After receiving the M.A. degree from the University of Texas in 1924, Clark held a number of appointive and elective positions in the state educational system. He served as chairman of the board of examiners of the State Department of Education (
