Go to - http://pages.zdnet.com/tomandjean/adventuresoftomandjeanclark/ if you care to take a look. My truck is a 1998 Freightliner FL-60 purchased used from a private party. It is a 2-door extended cab model Mountain Master conversion. It has air-ride suspension on the rear axle, the cab, and the seats. The air hitch is also by Mountain Master with a Binkley dual articulating head. The Mountain Master hitch has fore and aft cushioning as well as up-down. Since we pull a 40 foot trailer, I especially like the very tight turning radius provided by the short wheelbase of the extended cab and Freightliner's 50 degree wheel cut. The engine is the Cummins 5.9 liter ISB model and the transmission is the Allison MD-3060 automatic. I added the Banks Engineering Diesel power booster system to the 5.9 Liter Cummins engine. The stock setup on this engine gave me 230 HP and some 600 lb/ft of torque. Banks says the conversion added 100 HP and 200 lb/ft of torque. I have no way to actually measure the HP and torque, but I can tell you that it is a different truck now. The truck I bought used from a private party did not have the air ride hitch. I took it back to Mountain Master and had it upgraded. Since my trailer is taller than normal and/or this truck is shorter, I had Mountain Master build a special 2.5 inch frame to raise the hitch that much so my trailer will ride level on the road. I also added an extra step to the right and left sides to make climbing in and out easier.

Three Poems
A Lesson in Geography
Failure of sympathy buries you
in the sand, like the body of
a person at the beach
in your imagination, where
the deer still come down to the water
to utter their spontaneous cries
into the oncoming headlights of the approaching wave of evening, that time when your dreams run wild dogs back into the caves in the rocks out of fright, and deference to the way you feel. Baby if you don't understand I'm sorry it's time, and I guess I'm sorry too as and if it's too late to provide sand castles with bridges across their moats. Wimps do that, break down into particulate matter, like grains of sand in the bucket of a child who remains in chains. The life of it is in the details, anyway. That away lies the equator. Sacrifice a goat when you cross. Fleeting Promises This late hour in the night of dreams the onslaught of the past surprises erasing the way back to the crystal clear cave unable to be caught by light when I fall under the deep blue rain slick streets headlights on the wall throwing silhouettes older than movies of dead angels whose marble wings are shredded by raked clouds Oct. 28

Abbott, Lee K, et al. THE PUTT AT THE END OF THE WORLD
Reminiscent of Naked Came the Manatee is this collage about golf, lifestyles, and ecoterrorism. Some of the same authorsDave Barry, James W. Hall, Les Standifordeven participate, and they are joined by Richard Bausch, Tami Hoag and Tim O'Brien, among others. Projects of this sort tend to be uneven, but also unpredictable, antic and wild. This is noexception. The last, short chapter, by the way, is by "Anonymous," and one suspects Carl Hiaasen.
Antrim, Donald THE VERIFICATIONIST
Antrim has been called "gloriously unhinged," and compared to Italo Calvino, but he's actually hinged in a parallel universe, and is much funnier and more coherent than Calvino. The Verificationist is about a psychotherapist at a pancake house who, near to starting a food fight, instead drifts to the ceiling in an out-of-body experience, granting himself a bird's-eye view of himself, his life, his associates, his values. Weird? Yeah, but way cool, too.

Robert Creeley
On Charles Olson
Preface to Charles Olson: The Allegory of a Poet's Life , by Tom Clark
ISBN: 1556433425, North Atlantic Books, paperback, $18.95
This piece is 1750 words or about five printed pages long.
To tell the story of a person's life is an art requiring both facts and determining intuition, a canniness as to how things fit or don't fit, and a wonder about it all that wants to realize an actual presence in a place and time, which are just as fragile, finally, as the images and words that may recall them. Olson's and my time was one still resonant with 19th century hopes, that we might have "better living through chemistry," for example, or that "self-improvement" was something quite possible, given hard work and a viable dream. I can still hear, no matter I would be rid of it, "Lives of great men all remind us/ we can make our lives sublime/ and departing leave behind us/ footprints in the sands of time..." Though it may be inaccurately quoted, I will not look it up.
Like so much in that initiating edge of the American place, Olson was self-invented, made his world both with and of his mind insistently. One recalls W.C. Williams writing, "A new world/ is only a new mind./ And the mind and the poem/ are all apiece." Olson valued immensely what he spoke of as "mindedness."  I would take his sense of one's "second birth," that coming into the world as fact of oneself, to be the possibility inherent, "that we are only/ as we find out we are."  Just so the emphasis upon "the use," that which one makes of oneself and by oneself, the complement to the social body, the "polis," he equally kept primary.

OVERTIME: Selected Poems, by Philip Whalen
Reviewed by Tom Clark
You can read a feature on Philip Whalen in Jacket # 11.
out , Whalen tends to circle around slowly and return to certain obsessive themes and rhythms. His formal universe, as he advises John Cage in the poem quoted above, is not really unbounded space, but, like a tuned piano's, a "closed system."
Philip Whalen
Whalen's finicky, self-conscious, urbane, pointillist sketching features high detail-resolution. A patient reader will pick up on brilliant perceptual moments of stillness, clarity and depth that accumulate small shocks in contemplative micro-spaces. That unexpected, instantaneous "shift from opacity to brilliance" Whalen speaks of in his firewatching poem "Sourdough Mountain Lookout" encapsulates his stylistic signature: "The Zenbos say, 'Lightning-flash & flint-spark.' " [p. 20].
A self-acknowledged tendency to "bald-faced didacticism" in "moving from the particular to the general" [p. 50] sometimes pushes the vividly articulated moments of Whalen's poetry over the edge of their synapses toward wisdom, or beyond themselves into philosophical enlargement. The teacher in this poet lurks never too far beneath the surface of the amused or bemused observer.
Yet even the most generalizing of Whalen's poems has a way of turning itself inside-out with a deft, koan-like touch, as in "The Dharma Youth League," a small account of sudden enlightenment-within-confusion written in Kyoto in 1966:
