On Arthur C. Clarke
by Robert J. Sawyer
People keep saying Arthur C. Clarke should stop writing, now that he's "past his prime." No way! I hope he's still producing his solo works in 2001 and beyond. Clarke recently turned seventy-five. When one says to a 75-year-old that it's time for you to stop doing the work you love and instead you should do something else, that something else usually turns out to be dying. I loved Clarke's recent The Ghost From the Grand Banks . Now, it's no Childhood's End , but it is a good piece of Clarke and I thoroughly enjoyed it (and it's better than many of his lesser works from his golden youth, such as The Deep Range ). I also though I dislike the general ageism in this society. Clarke, or the cast of old Star Trek , or whomever one cares to name, should give up doing what they enjoy doing (and their livelihood) because they perhaps no longer do it the same way they did in their youth? Nonsense. Fortunately, there's a greater dynamic at play: the marketplace, which over and over and over again validates the work of these people, by continuing to buy it in huge numbers. May we all be so fortunate when we become senior citizens. Ghost From the Grand Banks is sort of distilled Clarke: it's his style concentrated, without apologies. He's always been known for sneaking in lectures on topics that fascinate him: all the stuff about the M-set in

to : How did you meet Arthur C Clarke? ITC: Peter Guber took me to Sri Lanka to try to interest Arthur in a joint venture. If you would like more details, please see the Introduction to the novel RAMA II. Moderator: to : Will there be a sequel to RAMA? ITC: There is a planned sequel to the game RAMA. My guess is that the RAMA universe will show up in a few more manifestations as well. Moderator: to : what kind of engineering work does Gentry do for NASA? shred: Gentry, were you a writer first or an engineer first? ITC: I was the director of Science Analysis for Viking, the Chief Engineer for Galileo, and on the review boards for most of planetary missions of the last two decades. Moderator: to : Does it ever feel strange to write with someone so well known and well regarded? ITC: As an undergraduate I studied languages and literature. In graduate school at MIT I studied engineering. All my life I have loved learning. I always expected to write novels when, and if I could find the time. Moderator: to : I am curious as to how Co-authoring a book works out. What roles do you each play? Arthur: Hello, Arthur is here Moderator: Greetings, ACC... ITC: I was flattered when Arthur asked me to collaborate with him. In the beginning it was very much a mentor student relationship, at least where the craftsmanship was concerned. Moderator: Any questions for Arthur? ITC: Hello, Arthur. Moderator:

Above all, it was much more American a far cry from today when at least half of Netfolks live outside the States. Just how could I reach Arthur C. Clarke for the future chapter of The Silicon Jungle C larke, after all, was on an island in the Indian Ocean, a long way from the nodes of even the usual commercial networks. I was doing well enough to talk to bulletin-board systems across town. For me and many others, it was the era of 300-baud modems. Not only were we Net-deprived, we were running machines with Jurassic software and a speck of the RAM in today's computers. Yes, Clarke was willing to cooperate with me. But the technological obstacles were more daunting. I wasn't the only one seeking a connection. Peter Hyams, a director at MGM/UA, wanted to stay in touch with Clarke via computer during the writing of the

WASHINGTON Noted space visionary and writer, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, believes that new images of Mars clearly show the red planet dotted with patches of vegetation, including trees. Such a find may help spark a far grander space program more aligned with the adventure and exploration portrayed in the epic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey - the collaborative work of both Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick. Clarke spoke last night, June 6, via phone from his home in Sri Lanka as key speaker in the Wernher von Braun Memorial Lecture series held here at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
