Clarke was born December 16, 1917 in Minehead, Somersetshire, England, the son of a farmer who began his career as a bureaucrat (in the British Civil Service) and a radar instructor in the Royal Air Force, and ended up as a celebrated author and television presence. He was a commentator, with Walter Cronkite, on the U.S. Apollo space missions that put the first men on the moon in the years 1968 to 1970, and he hosted two major series that still play on international television. He has won honorary degrees from universities all over the world, he has won Emmies, he has won all the major science fiction writing awards. In the popular mind, he is most noted for his screenplay, "2001, A Space Odyssey," released in 1968 by MGM and directed by Stanley Kubrick, perhaps the most celebrated science fiction movie of all time. Clarke has a gigantic list of other works. Many of them are science fiction of a high order. Childhood's End is a science fiction classic about a race of space aliens who come to guide Earth to peace and prosperity by eliminating all individual governments (and, therefore, war) and solving the problems of poverty, hunger and oppression.

Books by Arthur C. Clarke If Jules Verne is the father of hard science science fiction, Arthur C. Clarke is his adopted son. Clarke brought solid scientific principles to the genre, sticking hard to the rules of physics. His stories are less science fiction than they are science fact. He is the inspiration for dozens of scientists writing sf today. His seminal work is Childhood's End , a cornerstone of the genre. A race of creatures takes over the Earth in Independence Day fashion, but their conquest takes an interesting turn of events when their true mission is known. It's arguably the best novel of the 1950s and a true classic. Although his reputation in sf was assured by this work, his collaboration with filmmaker Stanley Kubrick led to another milestone in the form of the book and the movie of 2001: A Space Odyssey . This is one of the few times written science fiction intersected with filmed sci-fi. Clarke worked under Kubrick's direction to craft a wide-ranging novel spanning the evolution of mankind which would lead to the filmed version. As such, chapters were thrown away and other material rewritten until Kubrick was satisfied. The process was chronicled in The Lost Worlds of 2001 has become Clarke's most enduring work, and has spawned three sequels, including the soon-to-be-published

Lewis told Kathryn Lindskoog that the best science fiction book, in his opinion, was Clarke's Childhood's End. (Lewis didn't happen to mention that he and Clarke were acquainted, and that he had a close friend named Joy Gresham who was a friend of Clarke's.) Both of these fine books contained attacks on scientists in general, and astronauts in particular, which aroused my ire. I was especially incensed by a passage in Perelandra referring to 'little Interplanetary Societies and Rocketry Clubs'... "An extensive correspondence with Dr. Lewis led to a meeting in a famous Oxford pub, the Eastgate... Needless to say, neither side converted the other. But a fine time was had by all, and when, some hours later, we emerged a little unsteadily from the Eastgate, Dr. Lewis' parting words were, 'I'm sure you're very wicked people-but how dull it would be if everyone was good.' Fifty years after Clarke invented satellite communication, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Liverpool. The colorful ceremony in full academic regalia took place simultaneously in the afternoon in Liverpool and at night in Sri Lanka. The audience in Liverpool watched Sir Arthur C. Clarke, with the dark blue Indian Ocean behind him, on a large screen at the front of the auditorium. At the same time, Clarke watched the proceedings in the auditorium. (The ceremony had been briefly delayed by a disastrous satellite explosion out in space that very afternoon, but a substitute system worked fine.) The half-hour ceremony was riveting.
