21. James Clavell's Noble House: A Review
Review by Rich Heli.
http://spotlightongames.com/review/noble.html
A Review:
James Clavell's Noble House
the board game designed by L. Ross Babcock III for FASA, 1981 The Background to the game is of course James Clavell's novel Noble House of the same name, an epic, enjoyable read, which was also made into a fairly true-to-source television mini-series. The subtitle of the book is A Novel of Contemporary Hong Kong which is accurate, if one remembers that it was first published in the 1960's. The story is an examination of the lives, vicissitudes, triumphs and foibles of the richest industrialists of Hong Kongs, the Tai-Pans , during that era. Of particular interest to readers of the earlier novel Tai-Pan (later a film) is the fact that the same family is still important some six score years later, and that some of the events of that previous novel are still able to directly impact their lives. In particular, of the four half coins given away as promises in the 1840's, at least one of them still remains to be claimed in exchange for a favor of immense proportions. This concept is in the game too, but more about that later. As you will expect, each player represents a wealthy

James Clavell's Translation of The Art of War
Clavell's Version: Although James Clavell did not do this translation himself (it is a version of an older translation by Giles), his name appears prominently on its cover, so we refer to it by his name. This is the book for readers who want a little more explanation about what the nineteenth-century author thought Sun Tzu meant, mixed in with the text itself. The actual text and its sentences and paragraphs have little to do with the original text. The goal of this work is to explain Sun Tzu's ideas. In most cases, this explanation was not offered by Sun Tzu himself. This stanza, for example, appears as a single group of characters in the original, but Clavell's translation starts it in the middle of one paragraph and combines several of the lines together into single paragraph. This implies that Sun Tzu meant them to be taken together, but we don't know that. This translation cannot resist expanding and explaining the master's words well beyond anything Sun Tzu actually said.

27. James Clavell's Shogun
Capsule review. Certainly not one of Infocom's finer works, Shogun can only be recommended for people who want to see what another adaptation of one of james clavell's finest works is like.
http://www.matthewmurray.net/Reviews/ComputerGames/Shogun.html
James Clavell's Shogun (Infocom, 1989) Infocom's last attempt to adapt a previous work, Shogun unquestionably turned out worse of all the others. While the graphics are good and the prose descriptive, there is literally nothing new in this gameif you have seen the miniseries or read the book, then you know everything there is to know about this game. If you are unfamiliar with the book or movie, things are, in general, so subtle that you will unfortunately need to look at the hints very often. Certainly not one of Infocom's finer works, Shogun can only be recommended for people who want to see what another adaptation of one of James Clavell's finest works is like. Treated as a straight adventure game, however, it isn't really worth playing. Return to the Computer Games Review Page

30. Movie Habit: Review Of The Great Escape (1963), ****
Review of the 1963 movie, The Great Escape , written by the author and based on a true story.

The Great Escape
review by Marty Mapes
A Movie Habit micro review Based on a true story, and scripted by famed POW/author James Clavell, The Great Escape tells of a camp POWs in a German prison planning and executing a huge, bold, and daring escape. An all-star cast includes James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn. Of course, Steve McQueen gives the performance of his career (even if he's not the most subtle or talented of actors). Unforgettably whistlable music by Elmer Bernstein never overshadows the action. And on top of all that, it is a tense, action-packed, and fun movie. send feedback

The Eightfold Fence This is the first chapter of a long story about the relationship between John Blackthorne (Richard Chamberlain) and Father Martin Alvito (Damien Thomas) from the TV series SHOGUN. (Alvito was almost entirely removed from the shortened theatrical version of the story.) Further chapters of this saga will be posted at regular intervals. ONE Kasigi Omi stopped the convoy at the junction of two paths and consulted briefly with the local man who had been paid to act as their guide. The footsoldiers halted in meticulous order, glancing around cautiously at the dripping trees and rock-strewn hillside but making no sound. Omi passed them without a look or a thought, passed the first four mounted samurai likewise, and reined in close to the two Europeans. "Anjin-san, Tsukku-san," he said, respectfully, "this man says the valley road can be dangerous in winter weather; there is a higher path, but we must dismount and lead our horses." Tsukku-san - Father Martin Alvito of the Society of Jesus - shot a sideways look at his travelling companion to make sure the man had understood. In almost three years in Japan John Blackthorne had learned to communicate with some fluency in the complicated Japanese language, but there were still times when he failed to follow what was being said. Alvito, so well-versed in the language that he was capable of simultaneous translation and had long ago found himself thinking in Japanese rather than his native Portuguese, was prepared to translate if necessary.

35. Clavell
A fan page includes summary and book reviews of the author's book, Gai_Jin .
http://thomas.misslin.com/contents/japan/nipponbooks/gajjin.htm
Gai-Jin James Clavell (1994) Back cover: " Gai-Jin , meaning foreigner, is set in Japan, in 1862. It is not history but fiction. Many of the happenings did occur according to historians and to books of history which, of themselves, so not necessarily always relate what truly happened. Nor is it about any real person who lived or is supposed to have lived, nor about any real company. Kings and queens and emperors are correctly named, as are a few generals and other exalted persons. Apart from these I have played with history the where and how and who and why of itto suit my own reality and, perhaps, to tell the real history of what came to pass." James Clavell, 1994. Comments: Gai Jin , June 8, 2001
I picked up Gai Jin in a used book store for $1.00 and was hooked by page 3 (before even leaving the store). I vaguely remember reading Shogun as it was over ten years ago. Anyway, Gai Jin's pace is fast and the plot's twists and turns were quite exciting. However, as a Chinese American, I felt the way the Asians (Japanese and Chinese) depicted in this novel-and perhaps in all his books - was less than complimentary. Granted that Gai Jin's heroine and other non-Asian characters were as scheming and devious, I was left feeling a bit queasy as Clavell's books are read by the millions and unless the readers know better, Clavell's images would be all they have of Asians. Otherwise, I thought the book was entertaining and enjoyable. The ending was left a bit too loose as though a sequel could be conjured up. But alas, with Clavell's passing... (from New York).

JAMES CLAVELL James Clavell is a half-Irish Englishman, born in Canada and educated in Portsmouth. He served as a captain in the Royal Artillery during the war. In 1942 he was captured by the Japanese and sent to Changi. It was on his experience in Changi that his bestselling novel KING RAT was based. The interest in Asia, its people and culture continued with TAI-PAN, a tale of Canton and Hong Kong in the mid-19th century and the founding of an Anglo-Chinese trading company, Struan's. This was followed by the classic SHOGUN, the story of Japan during the period two centuries before when Europe first began to make an impact on the island people of the Rising Sun. NOBLE HOUSE, the fourth novel in the Asian saga, continued the story of Struan's, the Hong Kong trading company, as the winds of change blew through the Far East. GAI-JIN is the third novel in the Asian saga set twenty years after the end of TAI-PAN. Shogun (1975) John Blackthorne, whose dream is to be the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, to wrest control of the trade between Japan and China from the Portuguese, and to return home a man of wealth and position. Toranaga, the most powerful feudal lord in Japan, who strives and schemes to seize ultimate power by becoming Shogun - supreme military dictator - and to unite the warring samurai fiefdoms under his own masterful and farsighted leadership.
