own story is as lively and irresistible as any of her novels. She was born Beverly Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon, and, until she was old enough to attend school, lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged with the State Library to have books sent to Yamhill and acted as librarian in a lodge room upstairs over a bank. Beverly learned to love books there.
Leaving Yamhill did not distress me, for home was wherever my parents lived. I looked forward to Portland, where I would have children close by to play with, school, a real teacher who would teach me to read. A Girl from Yamhill
When the family moved to Portland, where Beverly attended grammar school and high school, she soon found herself in the low reading circle, an experience that has given her sympathy for the problems of struggling readers. By the third grade she had conquered reading and spent much of her childhood either with books or on her way to and from the public library. Before long her school librarian was suggesting that she should write for boys and girls when she grew up. The idea appealed to her, and she decided that someday she would write the books she longed to read but was unable to find on the library shelves, funny stories about her neighborhood and the sort of children she knew.

It's been a long wait ( Ramona Forever was published in 1984), but Miss Quimby is back, and she's as feisty as ever. Now in the fourth grade, Ramona is adjusting to life as a big sister to baby Roberta, finding out what it means to have a best friend, and experiencing the very first twinges of romance with her old buddy, Yard Ape. Plot threads run through the whole book, but as in the earlier novels, each chapter is also a small story unto itself. The vignettes are at their best when they get right to the heart of a child's concerns, as when Ramona accidently makes a face while having her class picture taken, a scenario immediately accessible to readers. Considering that Ramona made her first title appearance in 1955, Cleary (along with illustrator Alan Tiegreen) has done a remarkable job of keeping her au currant . There are a few slips heregirls who are almost 10 are more likely to be watching MTV than dressing up as princesses and witchesbut for the most part, this is just what readers have been waiting for: vintage Ramona.

But on a rainy day in third grade, Cleary had a life-changing experience. Out of boredom she began reading The Dutch Twins The Dutch Twins but The Swiss Twins as well . It was one of the most exciting days of my life." When Cleary became a librarian, she met children who were bored with traditional children's books, just as she had been. So she began writing a book of her own, the book that became Henry Huggins . When she finished the book, Cleary had an experience most authors only dream about: Her manuscript was accepted by the first publisher she sent it to. That was 50 years ago. Now she has many beloved books to her credit and is appreciated by young and not-so-young readers alike. In 1995, bronze statues of her three best-known characters, Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Henry's dog, Ribsy, were dedicated in a park in Portland, Oregon, where the young Cleary lived and where books featuring those characters are set. Beverly Cleary encourages young people who would like to be writers, but she also offers very practical advice: "If you're serious about becoming a professional writer, prepare to have some other way of earning a living. Many fine writers don't earn enough to live on. Read widely. Master the tools of writing. I know that spelling, punctuation, and grammar are boring, but they are necessary." Cleary, Beverly
(1916- ), children's writer Born on April 12, 1916, in McMinnville, Oregon, Beverly Bunn lived on a farm near Yamhill, Oregon, before moving to Portland (the setting of many of her books) when she was six. She was educated at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned her B.A. in 1938, and at the University of Washington, where she took a second degree in library science the following year. From 1939 to 1940 she served as children's librarian at the public library in Yakima, Washington. In 1940 she eloped with Clarence T. Cleary. Their twin children later became models for her fictional fourth-grader twins, Mitch and Amy. After serving as the post librarian at the U.S. Army Hospital in Oakland, California, from 1943 to 1945, Cleary became a full-time writer for young people. In 1950 her first book, Henry Huggins , was published, and ever since middle-grade schoolchildren have enjoyed reading about the adventures of its eponymous hero and his friends, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, on Klickitat Street, a real street near Cleary's childhood home in Portland. Cleary's books realistically portrayed ordinary children in search of fun and friendship, who also ran into problems and typically found reasonable solutions. A gentle humor became the hallmark of all Cleary's work. Among the perennial favorites are The Mouse and the Motorcycle Ramona the Pest (1968), and
