In 1856 he apprenticed himself to become a riverboat pilot and spent the next five years navigating the Mississippi. In 1862 he began work as a feature writer for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise and began to sign his work Mark Twain. The report of his journey to Europe Innocents Abroad 1969 became his first best-seller. In 1876 he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and in 1894 he published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Some modern readers are offended by the language Twain's books. His realistic prose style influenced numerous American writers. Twain was liberal on racial and social issues. One of the themes of Huckleberry Finn is equality for people of all races. Towards the end of his life Clemens was troubled by bad investments the loss of loved ones and depression. He died on 21 April 1910 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetry Elmira New York.

Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain)
Biography Samuel L. Clemens grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, the river town that inspired his most famous tales of boyhood adventure. His father died when the boy was only twelve, and young Clemens soon went to work as a printer's apprentice to help support the family. Printing and journalism became his best sources of income, and as he grew older and traveled across the country, Clemens began to write humorous sketches for such diverse papers as the Keokuk Saturday Post , the Territorial Enterprise , the Sacramento Union , and the New York Tribune . The pen name he adopted for his writingMark Twainmeant "two fathoms deep" or "safe water," a term he had learned as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi. Clemens's unique wit and knack for colloquial speech made such titles as Innocents Abroad The Adventures of Tom Sawyer The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Life on the Mississippi (1883), and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1894) instant American classics. Huckleberry Finn in particular is notable for the richness of its portrayals and for its complex presentations of issues such as family, race, and slavery.

Andrews, Kenneth R. Nook Farm: Mark Twain's Hartford Circle. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1950. By alphabetical coincidence, the Andrews work comes first, and this is the book that presents Clemens in his Connecticut context. Few people realize that Mark Twain, who lived in Hartford after 1871, wrote Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer there. For readers interested in Mark Twain's Connecticut, this is the book to read. Other biographies, which focus less on the Connecticut scene, are listed below. Blair, Walter. Mark Twain and Huck Finn. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1960. Brooks, Van Wyck. "Fetch her out!" "Fetch her out! We've got to see her!" "Fetch her out!" "Well, if it ain't a child! "And then he snatched a little leather sack out of his pocket and said to the servant: "There's a hundred and fifty dollars in dust, there, and I'll give it to you if you let me kiss the child!" That anecdote is true. But see how things change. Sitting at that dinner table, listening to that anecdote, if I had offered double the money for the privilege of kissing the same child, I would have been refused. Seventeen added years have far more than doubled the price.

Phoenixmasonry Masonic Museum Alias "Mark Twain" "The Innocents Abroad", "Roughing It", Adventures of Tom Sawyer", The Prince and the Pauper", The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur", etc. He was a member of Polar Star Lodge No. 79, St. Louis, Mo. (EA May 22, 1861, FC June 12, 1861, MM July 10, 1861). He was later suspended and reinstated on April 24, 1867. He demitted October 8, 1868 and presumably never again affiliated with any lodge. He is recorded as having visited Carson City Lodge, U.D. in Feb. and March of 1862. During his trip to Palestine, he sent his lodge a gavel with this note: "This mallet is a cedar, cut in the forest of Lebanon, whence Solomon obtained the timbers for the Temple." Clemens cut the handle himself from a cedar just outside the walls of Jerusalem. He had it made in Alexandria, Egypt and it was presented to the Lodge on April 8, 1868. He died in 1910. Organizing Intellectual Access to Digital Information: From Cataloging to Metadata Libraries not only collect and preserve material; they also provide access to it. The intellectual basis of providing such access is the organization and cataloging of materials under their aegis. The Library of Congress, even more than most libraries, invests heavily in cataloging its collections. It probably has the largest cataloging operation in the world and is a source of both cataloging data and standards for much of the library community. In the world of paper-based publication, its role is second to none. One enduring role of libraries during the transition from physical to digital information will be the intellectual task of catalogingimposing order on diverse resources with the goal of making those resources easier to discover and manage. As the chair of this committee said, "The librarian [in the digital age] will have to be a more active participant in staving off 'infochaos' by playing a role in selecting information resources and describing them in the 'information waterfall' of the 'virtual library.'" The first section of this chapter reviews the longtime leadership role of the Library of Congress in developing and maintaining cataloging standards for physical resources. The chapter then looks at the implications of the new digital milieu for these traditional cataloging mechanisms. It closes with some observations on how the Library seems to be addressing these changes, arguing that it is not treating them as the strategic issue the committee believes them to be.
