Clement, Hal (1922- )
American science fiction writer (real name Harry Clement Stubbs) and college physics teacher, with degrees in astronomy and chemistry, who speculated in detail about the intelligent life-forms that might evolve on a world of extremely high gravity (see gravitational life ). His books Mission of Gravity Close to Critical (1964), and Starlight (1971), explore the biology and physics of a giant, rapidly-spinning planet, Mesklin, whose effective gravity varies from 3 times (at the equator) to 700 times (at the pole) that of the Earth. Robert Forward presents an even more extreme scenario for gravitational life in his Dragon's Egg and Starquake

Hal Clement is an award-winning science fiction writer, a bona fide Grand Master of the genre, but he looks more like a high school teacher as he tells a crowd of fans about subjects like "What You Can't Get Away with in Hard SF and How to Do it Anyway." In 1998, Clement became a Grand Master, an award given for lifetime achievement by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Only a handful of writers, including Isaac Asimov Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein , have been awarded the title.
Clement's first story, "Proof", appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1942. NESFA Press recently reprinted three of his classic novels: Needle Iceworld and Close to Critical
His most recent novel is Half Life , published in September 1999. More Stories

In 1950, Hal Clement looked forward to huge advances from the space program. Some of those advances happened, but he finds the state of space in 2000 "disappointing." In 1998, Clement became a Grand Master, an award given for lifetime achievement by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Only a handful of writers, including Isaac Asimov , Arthur C. A Bibliography of Anthropological Science-Fiction
Dr. Robert N.Tyzzer III
(permission to duplicate granted if source is cited) The following bibliography includes books (mostly novels) that I have read, or which have been recommended to me. They all have, or are said to have, significant anthropological content or are of anthropological interest, in that they explore themes and topics from biological or sociocultural anthropology, or in some cases the essence of what it is to be "human". This may be in the context of a human biocultural system, or of a well-realized, anthropologically interesting, and scientifically plausible alien species. As anthropologist Jim Funaro of Cabrillo College has noted, "science fiction writers create alien societies, and anthropologists study them." The bibliography tends to include more established classics than extremely recent materials, and more "hard" SF than fantasy; suggestions for additions are always welcome, as are comments and critiques.
Major series are listed under the series title (in boldface ); titles by a given author marked with an asterisk (*) are also linked as sequels, prequels, etc.

He sits on the Special Olympics Board of Governors, and has hosted the San Diego Hospice Annual "Light Up A Life" Event for several years. He has also co-hosted The Children's Hospital Miracle Network Telethon. Hal's wife, Patty, is a bereafvement counselor. They have two daughters: Stacey and Brooke. We welcome nominations of titles for Golden Duck consideration as well as participation in our selection process. A committee including teachers, librarians, and fannish parents selects a finalist list of 5-6 titles in each category. Members of a larger jury read the finalist titles in a category and using Australian ballots decide on the winning title for the year. Our procedures are similar to the Hugos, with considerations for differences such as the small number of voters, and availability of titles.
