Catherine Clinton's interest in Children's literature began with the birth of her two childrenDrew in 1984 and Ned in 1989. When she interrupted her teaching career to spend more time with her family, she began to sketch out her ideas for books while consulting and writing for elementary school textbooks. As an author of the Houghton-Mifflin Social Science K-6 textbook series, WE THE PEOPLE , she found many important topics neglected and began her career as a children's book writer. Here is a list of her current titles. Please click on the book cover to learn more about each title: Back to Top

Q: Please discuss how the threat of being sold affected enslaved people.
    A:
Perhaps the greatest horror of slavery would be [that] you could be denied your own children. That although you were born into a family and you might indeed bear your own children who would be your descendants, you were somehow cut off from them by slavery. It was a system which could destroy blood ties, which could not destroy the bonds of affection which might try and survive and rise above and transcend the system of slavery. But as you were born into the world and knew who you were, that selfhood could be denied by society around you. You didn't own your own body. You had no legal standing. You were not a person under the law. And indeed, that kind of constant reinforcement of alienation was one of the greatest psychological damages of slavery. And even if you might transcend the psychological damage that this did, you nevertheless knew that at any time, your family could be taken away.

    Special report: University administration
Why Bill Clinton is the wrong man for Oxford
    Catherine Bennett
    Thursday January 9, 2003
    The Guardian

Veneris administer erectissime, indefatigabilis pilis, o gulose, dilecte sine causa amicis qui Britanniae praesunt ignaris, tuum ingenium ad nummos cogendum te, Praeses Clinton, Cancellarium Universitatis Oxoniensis faciat fructuosum.* It's just a draft, obviously. If Bill Clinton is first nominated, then elected chancellor of the University of Oxford as successor to Roy Jenkins, then the author of his citation may well wish to dwell on some of his less well-known attributes. In addition to his priapism, his greed and friendships with rich men, for instance, Clinton is also recognised for his generosity with pardons; his unusual arrangements with Hillary, that uxor validissima et iracunda; and for his highly regarded, if pricey line in after-dinner speaking ("His simplicity, elegance and friendship were very precious and contributed to make this evening unforgettable." - Paris Golf and Country Club).
