Flesh Wounds , Mick Cochrane's lucid portrait of an American family caught in crisis, begins from the point of view of Hal Lamm, a salesman who is being arrested for the molestation of his thirteen-year-old granddaughter Becky. But what begins as Hal's story becomes that of his wife, his children, and his grandchildren the people who have most suffered the consequences of his actions, and the ones forced to come to terms with their knowledge. By the end of the book, in fact, Hal seems to have all but faded from view, not just for the reader, but for his family, most of whom have come to make peace with their conflicted feelings toward him.
More than a story about incest though, Flesh Wounds
Like a handful of other brave and brilliant novels, such as Ordinary People and A Thousand Acres Flesh Wounds shatters the myth of the perfect family the glossy apple-pie image many people aspire to to get beneath the surface and expose the messy, scattered complexities that are at the heart of each family. Cochrane reveals not only the often devastating acts that take place behind closed doors, but also the astounding tools of the human psyche: to deny an unmistakable reality if it serves our purposes; to protect ourselves from pain, even if it means causing more pain for others; and, as only a courageous few will do, to look the truth unflinchingly in the eye while others must look away.

Q: What inspired you to write this story, in particular, about the subject of incest?
A:
I think the real subject of Flesh Wounds is family. It's about the injuries we suffer in families, injuries that may scar but not kill us Flesh Wounds and it's about the strength and comfort and healing we find in families. (I don't think of Flesh Wounds as about incest any more than I think of Ordinary People as being about boating accidents or suicide.) Hal's arrest is a precipitating event; it shakes things up; it makes it so things will never be the same again. For that reason, I think, it's a good beginning for a novel. It takes several hundred pages to record the tremors.
Q: Next to Hal, Phyllis could be considered one of the more reprehensible characters in the story, yet she seems to redeem herself in your eyes and even emerges as one of the most likable in the story. Explain why you constructed it in this way. Should the reader forgive her?
A:
I don't know whether or not a reader should forgive Phyllis. I'd like a reader to understand her; I'd like a reader to believe in her; I'd like a reader to find her convincing and memorable. Of course Phyllis is a deeply flawed character. She's guilty of a great many sins of omission and commission, of misplaced loyalty, of a kind of paralyzing cowardice. At the same time, I think, she demonstrates a capacity for self-honesty and for change. Unlike Hal, she comes to think of herself as responsible for her own life. For her to sift through the stuff of her life and let it all go, once and for all, might be considered an act of quiet courage. I like her because she has a sense of humor; she can laugh at herself.

ISBN: 0312269943 Cochrane, a professor at Canisius College in New York and winner of the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Competition with his first novel, FLESH WOUNDS, follows up with a delightful tale of youth and growing up. Harlan Hawkins is the title character. He's a sharp boy obsessed with baseball. Whether it be collecting baseball cards (he needs the Tony Olivia card, needs it!), playing first base in the summer league, or watching his beloved Minnesota Twins on the fuzzy black-and-white television, he obsesses about baseball. It's a good life - a mom, a dad, a brother, food on the table, a roof over their head, baseball on the television. Then his mother is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. His father, a hard-drinking hot-tempered man, leaves her and the family. Suddenly, it's not such a good life - his mother gets sicker and sicker, his brother distances himself more and more, the Twins are losing, the bills are piling up, and they're sliding down towards lower middle class, a kind of suburban poverty. SPORT relates Harlan's tale - his trials and tribulations, and his triumphs.

It's main argument is that if you can visualize what's going on in the story, then you will be a successful reader. The book goes on to recommend a bunch of visualization and dramatic techniques designed to help students. I've tried some of them and students enjoyed them. Lisa LaBrake recommends...

    Mick Cochrane
A nostalgic story about a Minnesota boy's search for belonging in a complex world. "In this wise, witty story set in West St. Paul in the '60s, a kid named Harlan navigates life by focusing on the Twins baseball team, a comic metaphor for hope. Sport is fat with small pleasures. It is a homer and a gift to all of us grownup knothole-game kids. There's a lot to love in this quiet little book, most of all its subtle wisdom about establishing individuality and finding joy amid chaos-in short, about growing up. " Minneapolis Star Tribune "Short and sweet, though not too sweet, and blessedly free of sentimentality. Mick Cochrane's intuitive, easygoing style finds a perfect balance mediating between the child and adult points of view." Boston Globe "With beautifully clean prose, Mick Cochrane has given us a novel evocative of everything from Emerson to Kerouac-nothing could be more American." Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel "Cochrane writes convincingly about troubled families without descending into the catch phrases of pop psychology. An appealing read."

The common cold: what it is
A cold is an infection which develops into illness over a few days. It usually starts with a scratchy or sore throat. Within a couple of days, you can have a blocked and/or runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, and/or a headache. Sometimes, there can also be mild fever, and general aches and pains. The cold can make you feel very ill, but it usually goes away within about a week, if you are otherwise healthy. The worst is usually over after the first few days. Colds are very common, especially in young children. They can get 6-10 colds a year (especially when they are in school or day care). An adult might get 2-4 colds a year, usually in winter.
A cold is not the same as influenza (the 'flu'), although sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a bad cold and a mild flu. Flu usually comes on much more suddenly, with high fever, chills and muscle ache. Flu hits faster, harder, and lasts longer than a cold. It is harder to recover from flu, and it can lead to pneumonia (a serious lung infection).
The cold is an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). The upper respiratory tract is the breathing system, around the nose and throat. It can be hard to tell the difference between the common cold and similar infections, such as:
