The wonderful thing about books is sometimes you can find one that seems just made for you, and you make it your own. Its late at night and I can't sleep, so I'm reading Jane Messer's new novel Night By Night, (published by McPhee Gribble). Its about Lena, who reads books late at night, when she can't sleep. Its a marvellous portrait of the book-loving insomniac, who knows that "reading in the evening isn't at all like reading at 3a.m.. Texts in time have effects. Biographies in the dawn hours invigorate, and offer company, a bedroom full of bodies..."
Its the detail of the observations that I like. "What is a body? Sleeplessness with four sides." Messer's character has excellent taste in reading material, too. There's a passage from Rilke, another from Blanchot on the "impossibility of sleep at the heart of sleep." Lena comments, "in the night, insomnia is dis-cussion: not the work of arguments bumping against other arguments, but the extreme shuddering of no thoughts, percussive stillness."
Now wait a minute! I might be nodding off here but isn't it unusual for an Australian novelist to have this breadth of literary sense, this commitment to the pleasure of the text made artfully out of other texts, as much as out of observation, narrative, character? I mean, as literary theorists go, Blonchot is about as cool as it gets.

    (submitted by Phip
'Hi Craig, are you there?' These were the first words Bernard Cohen, author of the 1996 Australian Vogel Literary Award winning novel The Blindman's Hat , uttered to me (well, emailed me). We had arranged a time to meet 'virtually' over the internet: me at my house and Bernard in his 'studio' (which he tells me is a shed out the back of his house in The Blue Mountains). This was my first interview for noise! , my first interview via the internet and my first interview with someone I had never met before (my only other interviews were with my dad in year seven for an English assignment and with Matthew Thompson, whom I had met before because he is friends with one of my housemates). I had no idea about what I was doing and really didn't know if my questions were any good. Nervously, I typed back: 'Yes, I'm here. How are you?'. That's how Bernard and I began a very disjointed 'virtual' interview. My first ever question went like this: Did you have an idea mapped out about the novel and where you were going with it, or did you simply begin writing and see where your characters lead you?

The Nuclear Power Advantage Nuclear energy can avert many of the environmental
consequences arising out of the use of fossil fuels. Prof. Bernard L. Cohen presents in this paper his point of view as an independant university researcher, into the advantages of nuclear power vis-a-vis other energy options.

Avoiding the environmental problems of fossil fuels
One important advantage of nuclear power is that is avoids the wide variety of environmental problems arising from burning fossil fuels - coal, oil, and gas. These environmental problems probably exceed those of any other human activity. The ones that have received the most publicity have been "global warming", which is changing the Earth's climate; acid rain, which is destroying forests and killing fish; air pollution, which is killing tens of thousands of Americans every year, while degrading our quality of life in many ways; the destructive effects of massive mining for coal; and oil spills which do great harm to ecological systems. "Some of the most important problems caused by acid rain are political."

My favorite way of putting risks into perspective is to consider the average loss of life expectancy they cause, LLE (indicated in parentheses throughout this article). I present here a brief catalog of these, taken from my paper published in the September 1991 issue of Health Physics Journal. Historically, diseases were one of the most important causes of life shortening, but now only heart disease (4.4 years), cancer (3.4 years), and stroke (250 days) cause LLE of more than six months. Aside from diseases, the principal direct causes of death are accidents (366 days), suicide (115 days), and homicide (93 days). Over half of all accident deaths are due to motor vehicles, and half of these are alcohol related. The most important other type of accidents are falls (28 days), suffocation (28 days), drowning (24 days), poison (20 days), and fires (20 days). From the standpoint of fatal occupational accidents, the most dangerous industries are construction (227 days) and mining (167 days); much safer are services (27 days), trade (27 days), and manufacturing (40 days). Perhaps the best known risky behavior is smoking cigarettes (6.6 years for men, 3.9 years for women). Even more dangerous is being an alcoholic (12 years). Over-eating gives an LLE of about 36 days per pound, or one year for each 10 pounds overweight; being 20% overweight increases the fatality risk of heart disease by 29%, of cancer by 10%, of stroke by 15%, and of diabetes by 130%.

Ries Waldheim is the first book in English to deal with the controversy surrounding Austria's current President. It has much that is thought-provoking, but, unfortunately, it contains too many errors to justify any pretensions it may have to credibility. The omission of details, the proliferation of factual discrepancies, the frequency of non sequiturs, and the abundance of what could be typographical errors force one to question how this book, in its present condition, could have gotten by its publishers. Waldheim 's unforgiveable sloppiness of style aside, what of the substance of the book? It seems that the book's main objective is to determine the rationale for Kurt Waldheim 's propensity for withholding certain episodes in his past. To accomplish this a rather intensive historical investigation is undertaken to show that Waldheim 's repeated bouts of amnesia are only symptomatic of an equally chronic memory lapse on the part of his native Austria (for also failing to come to terms with its past), and, amazingly, of a good portion of the Western world as well. If this sounds like a reappearance of the collective-guilt notion, it certainly is, here employed to induce a sense of shame in those nations who, for various reasons, failed to take this "last" opportunity provided by the
