New ACE Report Fails to Remedy Ethical Problems Concerning Industry-Backed University Research
Working Together, Creating Knowledge: The University-Industry Research Collaboration Initiative
Integrity in Science Collins said that the ACE-NAB report is disappointing for the following reasons:
  • It does not encourage transparency in industry-university business relations. It fails to urge that professors routinely and publicly disclose their business affiliations, and that universities provide full descriptions of all grants and financial relations with businesses;
  • It fails to recommend any meaningful internal-check mechanisms, such as like an independent ombudsman who can act as a potential whistle blower if ethical problems arise and are ignored;

THE BIG CARNIVAL (a.k.a. ACE IN THE HOLE)
Paramount, 1951, 111 mins. 35mm print source: Paramount Pictures.
Directed and produced by Billy Wilder. Written by Wilder, Lesser Samuels, and Walter Newman. Photographed by Charles B. Lang, Jr.. Edited by Doane Harrison and Arthur Schmidt. Music by Hugo W. Friedhofer. Production design by Hal Pereira and Earl Hedrick. Principal cast: Kirk Douglas (as Charles Tatum), Jan Sterling (Lorraine Minosa), Porter Hall (Jacob Q. Boot), Robert Arthur (Herbie Cook), and Frank Cady (Mr. Federber).
Excerpted from On Sunset Boulevard by Ed Sikov (Hyperion, 1998):
Ace in the Hole would be Billy’s most closely conceived and personally expressive film to date. He drew the title of the film (as yet announced) from a poker hand. "I don’t like the looks of it, Chuck," the reporter’s young assistant remarks soon after discovering a life threatening catastrophe. "I don’t either, fan," Chuck says with a grin, "but I like the odds."
The Hollywood Reporter’s reviewer set the tone for the American public’s response: "Ruthless and cynical, Ace in the Hole is a distorted study of corruption and mob psychology that, in the reviewer’s opinion, is nothing more than a brazen, uncalled-for slap in the face of two respected and frequently effective American institutions—democratic government and the free press." The film, the Reporter continued, "proceeds on the premise that Americans are a bunch of dopes, easily duped, victims of mass hysteria and emotionally placated by vicarious experience." According to the Reporter, this was unfair.

Research Interests
My research focuses on the properties and effects of atmospheric aerosols. On a regional to global scale, the efforts of our research group are concentrated on investigating radiative forcing by tropospheric aerosols, while on a local to regional scale, similar analytical tools are used to improve our understanding of air pollution. Atmospheric aerosols impact climate i) directly by scattering some fraction of the incident sunlight back into space and absorbing an additional fraction, and ii) indirectly by altering the properties of clouds. Together, these two effects are thought to cool the Earth by an amount comparable to the warming caused by greenhouse gases. Therefore, it is essential that the effects of aerosols are included in any prediction of future climate. Understanding the climatic impact of aerosols requires detailed aerosol data from locations around the world over extended periods of time. A number of intensive field campaigns have been undertaken in recent years to provide these data. Although our research group is also involved in theoretical and laboratory studies, we spend most of our time developing new instruments that can provide essential data during such campaigns, and ultimately employing them in the field.

Click on each image below for a larger view Between October of 1977 and February of 1980, I drew several hundred comic strips featuring a bumbling World War I flying ace. These were published in the pages of The Kamloops Daily News , a well run paper in my boyhood home town of Kamloops in south central British Columbia, Canada. The protagonist was named Archibald Flak (from two wartime nicknames for antiaircraft fire). He and his mechanic and sometimes unwilling flight partner Gerhard survived by bumbling their way through the war. Ace was loosely modeled by a mixture of Hasek's Czech classic The Good Soldier Schweik and a Canadian novel series about a WWI pilot. Many of the jokes came from a good friend of the family and veteran of WWII named F.H.A. Collins who was a avid storyteller and even more avid writer of letters to the editor. Collins was a well known and liked character in Kamloops and spent many of his days cutting trails in the Peterson Creek park and its dramatic valleys and canyons. Collins was a true blood Cockney from London and was a fount of stories and old jokes of the British Empire of the early part of this century.

Ace Collins is the author of numerous books, including The Mandrell Family Album Tanya , and Father Does Know Best . He collaborated with Glen Payne and George Younce on The Cathedrals , More details about Ace are available at www.AceCollins.com ZCS: What has been the response to Turn Your Radio On AC: I have written more than fifty books, but never have I had the response that Turn Your Radio On Turn Your Radio On for every six tickets sold to the show. Over the next five nights the pace continued. Imagine, over 5,000 people watching a production show filled with rock, country and big band music and they were so intersted in gospel music and the stories behind those songs they waited in line for long periods just to get the book and have it signed. I was overwhelmed! We have been back to that theater two more times and the reaction has been the same! Can you imagine what the response would have been if those patrons had paid to see a Christian musical?

There has been very little activity on the sun to speak of. Average solar flux this week was about the same as last, up by less than 6 points. Average sunspot numbers declined a little over 10 points. The prediction for the near term is absolutely flat, with solar flux at 140 for the next week. This is a little too far out to predict with great accuracy, but the projected solar flux is expected to go below 140 around July 9-12. All of this is far below the information from last week, which indicated a rise to 170 by the end of June, which is in the next few days. Now there is no activity to indicate that this will happen. There is a possibility of an eruption from sunspot 8, but it is not directly facing earth and will continue to rotate away from us. Sunspot 8?
