Most of the poetry books I own grace the shelves of my bedroom, voyaging perhaps monthly for a period of (roughly) a week to the nightstand or the ledge of the bathtub. Certainly they are loved but not necessarily treasured.
Treasured is Billy Collins’ Picnic, Lightning, a collection of verse that has visited so many locales that I wonder how I haven’t misplaced it by now. In addition to seeing the shelf, nightstand, and bathtub ledge, it has voyaged downstairs to the sofa and outside to the porch. It has traveled in its share of cars, a couple of planes, and even a cruise ship. It has spent lazy evenings in New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, and North Carolina. It has enjoyed the sunshine of the Caribbean.
As one can imagine, when Berks Bards, Inc. announced that Collins would be one of the poets featured as part of their 30 day poetry festival, I was extremely enthused. And thanks to Berks Bards, Inc., Collins appeared on April 5 at Perkins Hall, Penn State Univeristy- Berks Campus to please the ears of poetry enthusiasts from across the county. I found the turnout at Perkins on the fifth to be surprisingly small when viewed in the context of my Collins-infatuation; however, the size of the crowd turned out to be a benefit, as it provided for a more intimate setting.
Liz Stanley, a member of the Berks Bards board of directors, introduced Collins as a poet whose work would be enjoyed by poetry lovers and poetry haters alike, a statement that served as a perfect sketch of Collins’ warm and unstilted style. And thus, the mood was set for guaranteed pleasure.

LIVE! @ your library, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, will present three acclaimed authors at the second annual National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., Saturday, October 12. United States Poet Laureate Billy Collins, acclaimed novelist Dagoberto Gilb and best-selling author Anita Shreve will be among the more than 60 authors and artists from around the country invited to read at the festival presented by the Library of Congress and First Lady Laura Bush. In January, he launched "Poetry 180," a program aimed at making poetry an active part of the daily experience for American high school students. He has published several collections of poetry, including "Sailing Alone Around the Room," "Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes," "Questions about Angels" and "The Art of Drowning." This fall, he will release a new collection of poems entitled "Nine Horses." New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1995. According to

picnic, lightning
It is possible to be struck by a
meteor or a single-engine plane while
reading in a chair at home. Pedestrians
are flattened by safes falling from
rooftops mostly within the panels of
the comics, but still, we know it is
possible, as well as the flash of
summer lightning, the thermos toppling
over, spilling out on the grass.
And we know the message can be
delivered from within. The heart, no valentine, decides to quit after lunch, the power shut off like a switch, or a tiny dark ship is unmoored into the flow of the body's rivers, the brain a monastery, defenseless on the shore. This is what I think about when I shovel compost into a wheelbarrow, and when I fill the long flower boxes, then press into rows the limp roots of red impatiens the instant hand of Death always ready to burst forth from the sleeve of his voluminous cloak. Then the soil is full of marvels, bits of leaf like flakes off a fresco, red-brown pine needles, a beetle quick to burrow back under the loam. Then the wheelbarrow is a wilder blue, the
