Collins, William Wilkie (1824-1889) Englischer Schriftsteller.

His Life
Return to Wilkie Collins Appreciation Page There are a number of Collins biographies. One of the most recent is called "The King of Inventors" by Catherine Peters (thanks to one of my corresponents for this), but I haven't read it yet. The following is culled from a number of sources: William Wilkie Collins was born in London on 8 January 1824, the oldest son of William Collins, RA, a fashionable painter. Collins was named after a friend of the family, Sir David Wilkie, RA. His early career was in commerce, but he then studied law and was actually admitted to the Bar, but does not appear to have practised. He had been writing articles and stories for some time, many of which were published (though apparently anonymously). He also seems to have tried his hand at painting, and in 1848 had a picture exhibited in the Royal Academy. His first major published work was a biography of his father, and the popularity of this book seems to have encouraged him to write seriously for a living. His first novel, Antonina or The Fall of Rome was published in 1850. This was a historical work, along the lines of Bulwer-Lytton's

The organization shrouded itself in an air of mystery, with a secret terminology and fantastic rituals, and included all ranks of people as its members nobles, army officers, peasants, landlords, priests, and government officials. In January of 1858, an assassination attempt was made on Napoleon III, injuring the French Emperor and killing or wounding sixty people. The plot supposedly was hatched in England by members of the Carbonari Society and the grenades used were made in England. Mass hysteria resulted on both sides of the Channel 20,000 Londoners demonstrated in Hyde Park, shouting "Down with the French!"

According to M. H. Abrams, "Most allusions serve to illustrate or enhance a subject, but some are used in order to undercut it ironically by the discrepancy between the subject and the allusion" (8-9). Writing before the fashion changed and allusions became deliberately private and obscure, as in the poetry of T. S. Eliot, Wilkie Collins employed allusions to the lost Franklin Expedition and Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners The Rivals (1775) in order to add breadth to the action, to intensify the suspense, and to comment on the characters in his sensation novel No Name Just as in the opening chapter of A Tale of Two Cities (1859) Charles Dickens characterizes the chronological setting of his story through a series of evocative historical allusions to events as well known as the 1774-5 Continental Congress in the American colonies and to personages as little known as the visionary Joanna Southcott, so in

    Biography
English novelist, whose unconventional private life and determination to tackle social issues disconcerted his audience. Many of Wilkie Collins's novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau, he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins's novel The Moonstone (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction. Wilkie Collins was born in London. His father was William Collins, a well-known landscape painter, and mother Harriet (Geddes) Collins, the daughter of a painter. They were a devoted couple, and young Wilkie grew with his brother in a secure household. However, Collins never outgrew his childhood sickliness, he was small and had a slightly deformed skull. Collins was educated privately, he studied painting for several years. At the age of eleven he began attending school, but at the end of the year the family moved to Italy, where William Collins studied the old masters. After nearly two years abroad, the family returned to England. With the help of his father, Collins found work in the office of a tea importer (1841-46). During this period he started to write fiction. Collins' first story. "The Last Stagecoachman" was published in 1943. He studied then law without much enthusiasm and worked industriously on his first novel
