Padraic Colum was born Patrick Collumb on 8 December 1881 at Collumbkille, County Longford. In 1901 he joined the Gaelic League and began to call himself Padraic Colum. Living in Dublin, he frequented the National Library, where he met James Joyce , with whom he developed a close friendship. Colum's first published writings were poems which appeared in the Irish Independent and United Irishman in 1902. In 1903, the Irish National Theatre Society staged his Broken Soil at Molesworth Hall, Dublin. Colum became a member of the National Theatre Society. Andrew Malone, The Irish Drama
Poet, playwright, novelist, children’s author and folklorist, Pauric Colum was born on December 8th, 1881, son of Patrick and Susan Colum, at a workhouse in Longford run by his father.
Colum’s early years were spent in Longford and Cavan, before his family moved to Sandycove, where his father became railway station manager. He attended Glasthule National School in Sandycove and at the age of seventeen, with only eight years of formal education, passed an examination for a clerkship in the Irish Railway Clearing House; it was at this time, also, that the young Colum began —— after a nine–hour workday in a six–day working week —— to write poetry and plays. At twenty–two, he was given a five–year scholarship by a wealthy American patron, Thomas Kelly, for a period of study and writing at UCD. A number of his early poems appeared in Arthur Griffith’s United Irishman;

Bhí sé leis ar cheann de phríomh-dhamadoirí a linne. "

Bhí athair Pádraic Colum ina mháistir ar theach na mBocht i Longfort. Is ann a rugadh Pádraic ar 8ú Nollaig 1881 – file, úrscéalaí, bailitheoir béaloideasa. Susan a bhí ar a mháthair. Chaith sé na blianta tosaigh sa Longfort agus sa Chabhán go ndeachaigh an chlann go Sandycove i mBaile Átha Claith mar a raibh a athair i gceannas ar an stáisiún traenach. D’fhreastail sé ar bhunscoil Glas Tuathail agus ag aois 17 mbliain, tar éis ocht mbliain de scolaíocht fhoirmeálta d’eirigh leis sa scrudú do chléireach san “Irish Railway Clearing House”.

I Shall Not Die for Thee
O woman, shapely as the swan,
On your account I shall not die:
The men you've slain a trivial clan
Were less than I. I ask me shall I die for these
For blossom teeth and scarlet lips
And shall that delicate swan-shape
Bring me eclipse? Well-shaped the breasts and smooth the skin,
The cheeks are fair, the tresses free
And yet I shall not suffer death,
God over me! Those even brows, that hair like gold,
Those languorous tones, that virgin way, The flowing limbs, the rounded heel Slight men betray! Thy spirit keen through radiant mien, Thy shining throat and smiling eye, Thy little palm, thy side like foam I cannot die! O woman, shapely as the swan, In a cunning house hard-reared was I: O bosom white, O well-shaped palm, I shall not die! Here are the original Irish texts on which this poem is based , together with a literal transation. And here is an alternative translation by Frank O'Connor

http://www.pgil-eirdata.org/html/pgil_datasets/authors/c/Colum,P/xtra.htm
Padraic Colum, ed., Anthology of Irish Verse (1922): Introduction I II Anglo-Irish literature begins, as an English critic has observed, with Goldsmith and Sheridan humming some urban song as they stroll down an English laneway. That is, it begins chronologically in that way. At the time when Goldsmith and Sheridan might be supposed to be strolling down English laneways, Ireland, for all but a fraction of the people, was a Gaelic-speaking country with a poetry that had many centuries of cultivation. Afterwards English speech began to make its way through the country, and an English-speaking audience became important for Ireland. And then, at the end of the eighteenth century came Thomas Moore, a singer who knew little of the depth or intensity of the Gaelic consciousness, but who, through a fortunate association, was able to get into his songs a racial distinctiveness. At the end of the eighteenth century the harpers who had been wandering through the country, playing the beautiful traditional music, were gathered together in Belfast. The music that they were the custodians of was noted down and published by Bunting and by Power. With such collections before them the Irish who had been educated in English ways and English thought were made to realize that they had a national heritage. Silent, O Moyle, be the roar of thy water;
