April 6 ~  Ambition Join'd Power of Myth Love 's but a frailty of the mind
When 'tis not w i t h ambition j o i n d ." ~ William Congreve As ironic as any play he wrote, when English playwright and poet William Congreve (1670-1729) released his Way of the World (1700), the play failed terribly. This so discouraged him that he quit the stage, retiring to live as a country gentleman. "Say what you will, 'tis better to be left than never to have been loved," he wrote in Act 2 of the famous five-act play. Often revived, Way of the World is considered his masterpiece, "the best of the Restoration plays." A comedy of manners and satire of the time he lived; its beautiful heroine Millamant offered actresses a fine comedic role. "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned," he observed. Born to genteel society of Leeds, Congreve's other major plays included The Old Bachelor The Double-Dealer (1693), and Love for Love Praised by Samuel Johnson , Congreve was a wizard with comic dialogue and intricate plot twists which poked fun at his society's rules about love and marriage "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast," Congreve believed, "to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."

    Introduction
In the early 19th century, Sir William Congreve invented a new type of rolling ball clock, apparently without knowledge of previous activities in the field of rolling ball clocks. Congreve's clock differs from earlier designs in its mode of operation. Instead of rolling a ball down a fixed incline, Congreve's clock rolls a ball in a zigzag path across a tilted table. When the ball reaches the lower side of the table, the table tilts, raising the low side. The ball rolls back, and the cycle continues.

It's not glitter. Congreve is the same. It's real - a slice of life. Nothing at all incredible' Joe Orton 'Heav'n, that but once was Prodigal before, Tho Shakespeare gave as much; she could not give him more.' Dryden
A history of the play in production
It was really after Mrs Abingdon's retirement from theatre in 1798 that the play began to disappear from contemporary repertories: at Drury Lane she had monopolised the role of Millimant for thirty years. John Kemble revived the play in 1800 but his limited comic ability made him an unsuitable Mirabell. After this the play languished until 1842 when a notable Victorian 'adaptation' at The Haymarket omitted Mrs Fainall's affair with Mirabell and turned Mrs Marwood into a male villain. Thus this ensemble play dropped out of fashion in a period which showed a general distaste for strong writing. The play began to gain again in critical stature in 1904 due to The Mermaid Society's well-received London production with Nigel Playfair at Witwoud. Playfair went on to produce a very effective modern run twenty years later at The Lyric, Hammersmith with Edith Evans as Millamant (1924). Afterwards Evans made a powerful Lady Wishfort at Old Vic in 1948. John Gielgud directed and played Mirabell at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1953 with Paul Scofield as Witwoud and Margaret Rutherford as Lady Wishfort. Recent productions include the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1965, the RSC at the Aldwych in 1978. The play was last seen in London when the Chichester Festival Theatre production transferred to The Haymarket in 1984.

Durchschlagenden Erfolg aber hatte Congreve erst mit seinen Theaterstücken: Die Aufführung der Komödie "The Old Bachelor" "Hagestolz" ) 1693 markiert den eigentlichen Beginn seiner literarischen Karriere. 1694 bzw. Yet it were to incur the imputation of too much sufficiency to pretend to such a merit as might abide the test of your lordship's censure. Introduced rockets to Europe after centuries of neglect.
William Congreve was born May 20, 1772 in London, England.
Throughout most of the 18th century, especially during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, the French led the world in the production of rockets. Most of these were used as fireworks, but some were used as incendiary and explosive war rockets.
At the time, military rockets were not regarded as a necessity due to advancements in conventional artillery like cannons and small arms. But, as the 19th century dawned, rockets would again be highlighted in battle.
In 1788, Hyder Ally of India formed a rocketeer contingent made up of 1,200 men. His son, Tippoo Sultaun, would soon have the opportunity to use rockets quite effectively against the British. At the Battle of Seringapatam in 1792, Indian soldiers launched a huge barrage of rockets against British troops, followed by an assault of 36,000 men.
Although the Indian rockets were primitive by modern standards, their sheer numbers, noise and brilliance were said to have been quite effective at disorienting British soldiers. During the night, the rockets were often seen as blue lights bursting in the air.
