Glen Cook:Sweet Silver Blues
In his Garrett books, Glen Cook has attempted to write "detective fantasy" novels in the same way that his Black Company books are "military fantasy". Sweet Silver Blues , the first in the series, makes it look like he's succeeded. Garrett is a private eye in a world full of elves, gnomes, and other such fantasy creatures. But it's not PI-meets-Tolkien, anymore than it's Hammett-with-elves. Instead, Cook has synthesized them, and they play off each other well. He avoids the problem John W. Campbell mentioned with respect to SF mysteries, that one could always come up with some magical way of solving the crime. Some unexpected fantasy elements are introduced, but gradually, and not always on Garrett's side. Garrett starts off being approached by the family of an old friend who recently died, and left his fortune in silver to a woman the rest of the family hadn't even heard of...but who was an old flame of Garrett's. The friend was, of course, in things over his head, and Garrett has to try to keep from getting swamped by the several groups that end up on his trail as he heads down to the silver-rich(and hotly-contested)Cantard looking for the elusive Kayean. Cook has introduced numerous elements which are skimmed over in the books, but probably have a greater role to play in later books(there are seven in the series by my count), which I am looking forward to reading. (The series is commonly referred to as the Adjective-Metal-Noun series, with titles like

Glen Cook:The Silver Spike
Glen Cook is perhaps best-known for his Black Company series. (Spoilers ahead for said series if you ain't read any of them. Fair warning.) The things I liked best about the Black Company books were a)the narrator Croaker, a cantankerous medic and chronicler, b)Croaker's strange relationship with the Lady, mistress of an evil empire, and c)the Black Company themselves, in some indefinable way. The Silver Spike is an offshoot of the Black Company books, taking place in the same world and involving some of the same characters. But it lacks all three of the above. Instead it focuses on characters that didn't join in the journey southward in Shadow Games Raven, Darling, and Silent being the most important among them. It introduces a new first-person narrator, Philodendron Case. In what has become standard since the second Black Company book, a substantial part of the book is also given over to a third -person narrator, with a few minor chapters done by others in third-person as well. Neither of the main characters is really as likeable as Croaker, but both are interesting in their own right. The third-person narrator, Smeds Stahl, is perhaps the most interesting, especially the slow evolution of character that takes place during the book, although it isn't quite satisfactorily resolved at the end, IMHO. Case also undergoes change as a character, but in a more subtle way.

Techyo Hi Glen!
Gandalara Hi ya :)
Cybling Glen... Faded Steel Heat ('99, New American Library) a continuation of your Garrett Noir/Fantasy novels...how many are in this series now?
Glen Cook There are Nine.
Cybling Why did you first decide to merge noir type characters in a fantasy setting?
Glen Cook Because I wanted to write the first book Sweet Silver Blues and my agent insisted I couldn't make enough money writing it as a regular detective novel. But I wanted to write it so badly, I finally wrote it as a fantasy novel. By the time I finished the first one I had the plots for the next two and so it's turned into a popular fantasy series. Cybling How many different series do you have going right now? Can you tell us a little about them. Glen Cook Just two, the Garrett files and Black Company. Cybling I've read some of your Garrett Books... But could you tell me a little more about Black Company...is it macabre fantasy? Glen Cook It can be in places. It's military fantasy, very dark (I'm told). My argument is that it's realistic. It's an ongoing story of a mercenary company that are initially the BAD GUYS. The books are told from their point of view and the force of circumstances through the books have made them become the good guys.

    Description
Glen Cook Sound interesting? If so, I'd recommend trying out The Black Company which is the first book in The Black Company series. It's probably my favorite series of his and its still easy to find in stores. There was an initial trilogy which you can start with and then move on to more books in the series if you want to. If you can't find one of his books at Amazon.com (many are now out of print) then you could try AbeBooks which is a fantastic online resource for hard-to-find books. They have 20 million books from a large set of used books stores from around the world. They can be a bit pricy at times, but are well worth it if you can't find it elsewhere.

by Glen Cook Reviewed by wracked This book is Glen Cook's last science fiction novel. He is more famously known for his Black Company series that follow a mercenary company through 30 years of service in a never-ending war between sorcerers. This is a great pity, because this book along with his other SF novels, Passage at Arms and The Starfisher Trilogy (Starfishers, Shadowline, Stars' End), are excellent reads. I would even suggest that based on his earlier efforts if he would have written more SF novels he would have garnered more accolades then he has from his fantasy novels. 1988 paperback
currently out-of-print The Dragon Never Sleeps is set in some distant millennium where mankind has colonized a significant portion of their quarter of the galaxy. Canon Space is the name given to the human-dominated areas and the task of policing such a large area is given to the Guardships (named after Roman Legions), a self-maintaining fleet of gigantic, virtually indestructible space ships that patrol the universe issuing dictates and maintaining order. The heavy-handed way they maintain control is the source of much irritation to the Houses, the semi-feudal/corporate entities that run the commerce throughout Canon Space. But the Guardships not only keep a tyrannical pressure on human space, they also wage wars against alien empires that dare to reject their idea of order. The second viewpoint is from a genetically engineered alien, Kez Maefele, a Ku, who was bred to fight against the Guardships hundreds of years in the past. He was one of the top generals when the aliens surrendered and has been living in obscurity since. He haunts a section of town called Down Town, which is the literal location since most of the middle class live in a huge tower and the ruling classes live in a floating city. He ends up getting recaptured by a Guardship
