B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) British writer who published over 90 highly popular novels which have been translated into twenty languages, among others into Finnish (over 30 works). In the 1990s Cookson's books have sold 90 million copies. Cookson became especially famous for her family sagas set against the backdrop of England in the 19th century. She wrote under the pseudonym Catherine Marchant, and produced three different series of books: the Bill Bailey series, Mary Ann series, and the Mallen series. "I was a story-teller from the time I could talk, and if I could get an audience, if I could get someone to listen to me... I used to pass the time, telling myself wonderful stories about us living in a nice house with lino on the stairs... one of the best ones I've ever told was about the wee folk, the little green men talking to me." (from Richard Joseph's Bestsellers Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, Co. Durham, an industrial region in the northeast of England. Unlike so many leading writers, she started life with many disadvantages. She was born illegitimate. Her mother was poverty-stricken, at times an alcoholic and occasionally violent. Cookson had only the minimum of education, and from the age of thirteen she suffered from hereditary hemorrhage telangiectasia. For many years Cookson believed that she had been abandoned as a baby and that her mother was actually her older sister.

14. Catherine Cookson
Catherine Cookson rich, highly successful, strong and totally thrown by minorcriticism. Catherine Cookson (Catherine Fawcett) was always a romantic.
http://www.northflow.fsnet.co.uk/catherine_cookson.html
www.northtrek.co.uk / northflow.fsnet.co.uk Catherine Cookson: rich, highly successful, strong - and totally thrown by minor criticism She died old (over 90) when she thought she would die young; she was one of the world's most prolific writers; yet she hid a deep insecurity and felt threatened by the most innocent criticism. With 78 books, selling more than 100 million copies in 30 countries, to remind us of her diligence to her public, no-one was more secure at the bank or in her public image that Dame Catherine Cookson.. She aimed directly at the hearts and minds of the majority audience (almost exclusively women) and displays of her work in bookshops were the envy of the rarified writers, who review each others' books in the better-quality newspapers. There was no cliquishness in her, no aiming at an elite, no vagueness. There was nothing of the literary salon about her. She spoke plainly. And never had a person of such wealth owed so much to poverty. Poverty was the making of her and wealth was merely the measure of her reward; poverty is what gave her spirit and purpose and a subject to describe; it was the badge of her courage. To this child of Tyneside early life was the sight of drunkenness, humiliation and being illegitimate; it was scavenging the beaches for debris; it was sitting by the old black fire range which was inscribed, "Grieve and Gillespie"; it was the powerful image of a mother born out of wedlock, the woman she knew as Our Kate. Many a Socialist politician would envy her such authentic suffering.

South Tyneside is very much 'Catherine Cookson Country' and there is a well established trail taking in the sights and scenes from her life and novels. The trail includes the historic and picturesque Westoe Village, a little oasis in the heart of South Shields. Many of her books were set here, namely Katie Mulholland, Kate Hannigan and Harrogate Street. St Peter and St Pauls' is where Catherine Cookson worshipped as a young girl and the area is featured in her novel Rooney.

Catherine Cookson dies
One of the most popular romantic authors Dame Catherine Cookson has died just nine days short of her 92nd birthday. Dame Catherine, who was born into poverty, died one of Britain's wealthiest women at her home near Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne, at 12.30pm, on Thursday. The announcement was made by Anthony Shiel, who had been her agent since 1970. He said her family were "desperately upset". "It's very sad. She had been under the weather for the last few months. In a way it was not unexpected," said Mr Shiel. "I know she had serious blood problems all her life and had suffered several haemorrhages.
"The last time I saw her was last summer and she was in perfectly good spirits. "She was very weak and had lost a lot of weight but she was still laughing, joking and had retained full mental capacity." Even though her first novel was not published until almost halfway through her life, Dame Catherine sold more than 100 million books in 30 different countries. "She was a unique woman. I remember her most for the hard life she led, her zest and curiosity. She is irreplaceable," said Mr Shiel.

It included some material she gave to the Library during her lifetime, such as examples of her novels in English and translated into various languages, as well as pages from corrected typescripts of two of her works. Also on display were photographs of a visit she made to the Library in 1985, together with presentation volumes, covering her many interests, given to her after conservation work by the Conservation Unit in the Library's Bindery.
