The 1920s saw a proliferation of chain stores for consumers at all levels of income. The growth of chain stores was aided by the tremendous popularity of the automobile, which greatly increased shoppers' mobility, especially in rural areas. Sears, Roebuck and Company was especially successful in taking advantage of these new market circumstances. In 1895, Sears was a mail-order company catering largely to rural demands for basic goods, but in 1925 it branched out into direct retailing, and by 1929 it operated a chain of 324 stores nationwide. F. W. Woolworth's, whose "five- and ten-cent" variety stores spread across the country by catering to lower-income consumers, was another successful chain; during the 1920s Woolworth's expanded into more and more working-class neighborhoods. Variety stores of this sort sold almost everything except fashions. An anniversary pamphlet, Fifty Years of Woolworth Mail-order buying continued during the 1920s, but the popularity of the new chain stores changed the way consumers shopped. Many documents of the time commented on this change and the problems that accompanied it. Examples in this digital collection include the economist Paul Mazur's pamphlet

A Stanford graduate, he worked from 1895 to 1913 as a mining engineer and consultant throughout the world. In 1899, he married Lou Henry. During World War I, he served with distinction as chairman of the American Relief Committee in London, as chairman of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, and as U.S. Food Administrator. His political affiliations were still too indeterminate for him to be mentioned as a possibility for either the Republican or Democratic nomination in 1920, but after the election he served Harding and Coolidge as secretary of commerce. In the election of 1928, Hoover overwhelmed Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York, the Democratic candidate and the first Roman Catholic to run for the presidency. He soon faced the worst depression in the nation's history, but his attacks upon it were hampered by his devotion to the theory that the forces that brought the crisis would soon bring the revival and then by his belief that there were too many areas in which the federal government had no power to act. In a succession of vetoes, he struck down measures proposing a national employment system or national relief, he reduced income tax rates, and only at the end of his term did he yield to popular pressure and set up agencies such as the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to make emergency loans to assist business.

Object Permanence magazine, 1994-1997
A selection of book reviews from Object Permanence magazine is available here . The website of the new Object Permanence pamphlet series can be viewed here
A brief history:
Object Permanence described itself as a magazine of experimental / modernist poetry, was edited by Robin Purves and Peter Manson, and was published in Glasgow, Scotland between January 1994 and February 1997. The magazine arose out of the extreme difficulty we had encountered, in Scotland, in trying to obtain information about contemporary British and North American experimental writing. In the absence of either a living/sustained connection between the Scottish poets we then knew and any such wider scene, or of any local academic interest in such writing, we were left to glean fragments where we could. A Various Art was in Hillhead Library. The Paladin anthologies came as a revelation, when finally we found them. The L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Lines supplement to a volume of essays called The Line in Postmodern Poetry (reference?) was for a long time our only source of work by writers of that tendency (the Scottish magazine

John Richardson Clark
John Richardson Clark was born June 11, 1824, in Westford, Mass. He was the son of Horatio Clark and Betsey Bixby On September 15, 1846, he married Caroline Maria Derby , daughter of John Derby His ambition was to become a locomotive engineer but did not pursue it due to his wife's fears for his safety. In 1851, he went to California via the Isthmus of Panama. (The Panama Canal was not built until much later.) While in California, he paid little attention to gold hunting, finding better prospects as a machinist with the firm of W. T. Garrett. He remained in California until 1854. His wife Caroline did not go with him. He is said to have taken the first weather vane to California, and to have built the first stationary engine in California in a flour mill. He went to California again in 1864 for a short period, and a third time in 1875, when he stayed three years in San Francisco. When he returned to Waltham, Mass., he brought a diamond ring for each of his two daughters. One of these rings is now worn by Lucia Ann Hunt.
