Oneonta, New York. Hugh C. MacDougall, editor. (pp. 41-45) Return to SUNY Seminars Country Rambles , Susan Fenimore Cooper wrote, "We Americans...are still, in some sense, half aliens to the country...there is much ignorance among us regarding the creatures which held the land as their own long before our forefathers trod the soil, and many of which are still moving about us, living accessories of our existence, at the present hour" (16). Even a cursory look at Susan Cooper's publishing career reveals her interest in curbing this ignorance; in addition to writing Rural Hours Lawrence Buell has suggested that part of what reveals the difference between Susan and James's environmental visions is Susan's emphasis on the natural world. Buell notes that throughout

Cherry Hill District E-news CHCLC Newsletter Welcome to J.F. Cooper Elementary School , home of the Cooper Jaguars. We are one of twelve K-5 schools in the Cherry Hill New Jersey community. As a suburb of Philadelphia , we have many learning opportunities outside of the school walls to enrich our studies. Cooper School has a richly diverse student population of about 280 students who are eager to learn and are actively supported by their parents.
Our parents distinguish themselves through their work in making Cooper truly a community school. They support the total school program through volunteering in classrooms, in the library and participating in special school projects. In addition, at Cooper the PTA plans special events for the enjoyment of the entire family.
We are a school where a standards based education with high expectations is delivered to all children. We communicate what children should know and be able to do to our community for every grade level in print and in learning opportunities for parents. Our teaching motto has been, “This is important. You can do it. I won’t give up on you.”

Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses
by
Mark Twain
"The Pathfinder" and "The Deerslayer" stand at the head of Cooper's novels as artistic creations. There are others of his works which contain parts as perfect as are to be found in these, and scenes even more thrilling. Not one can be compared with either of them as a finished whole. The defects in both of these tales are comparatively slight. They were pure works of art.
Professor Lounsbury The five tales reveal an extraordinary fullness of invention. ... One of the very greatest characters in fiction, Natty Bumppo... The craft of the woodsman, the tricks of the trapper, all the delicate art of the forest were familiar to Cooper from his youth up.
Professor Matthews Cooper is the greatest artist in the domain of romantic fiction in America.
Wilkie Collins It seems to me that it was far from right for the Professor of English Literature at Yale, the Professor of English Literature in Columbia, and Wilkie Collins to deliver opinions on Cooper's literature without having read some of it. It would have been much more decorous to keep silent and let persons talk who have read Cooper. Cooper's art has some defects. In one place in "Deerslayer," and in the restricted space of two-thirds of a page, Cooper has scored 114 offenses against literary art out of a possible 115. It breaks the record.

The Americans . . . are almost ignorant of the art of music, one of the most elevating, innocent and refining of human tastes, whose influence on the habits and morals of a people is of the most beneficial tendency. Principles . . . become modified in practice, by facts. A refined simplicity is the characteristic of all high bred deportment, in every country. The press, like fire, is an excellent servant, but a terrible master.

EAF Authors: James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper, widely considered to be the first great American novelist, was born in Burlington, New Jersey on September 15, 1789. The son of a wealthy and influential judge, Cooper lived the comfortable life of a country gentleman until a series of family tragedies left him deeply in debt and caused him to turn to writing as a source of income. Although his first novel, Precaution, was a failure, his second effort, The Spy, was very successful, bringing him international fame and recognition. Cooper is perhaps best known for his five Leatherstocking Tales, the most famous of which is The Last of the Mohicans (1826). From 1826 to 1833 Cooper lived in Europe, where he produced some unpopular political writings which somewhat damaged his reputation back home. He spent the last years of his life in Cooperstown, NY, a settlement founded by and named after his father. Cooper continued to write prolifically until his death on September 14, 1851.

From Oscar Fay Adams, A Dictionary of American Authors , 4th edition (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1901): Cooper, James Fenimore. New Jersey, 1789-1851.
The first American writer to gain general European recognition and the first native novelist who won a national reputation. Although much that he wrote is nearly forgotten, the best of his work survives and is still popular. His first novel, Precaution , a conventional, mediocre piece of writing, appeared in 1820, and was followed in 1821, by The Spy , the most famous of all his books, having been translated into all the principal languages of Europe. Almost as famous is The Last of the Mohicans , a much greater work. Among his tales of the sea, The Pilot and The Red Rover are the best, as the five "Leather Stocking" tales The Deerslayer The Last of the Mohicans The Pathfinder The Pioneers The Prairie are the best of his stories of Indian life.
