"The Old Forest Pines" by Susan Fenimore Cooper
Just at the point where the village street becomes a road and turns to climb the hillside, there stands a group of pines, a remnant of the old forest. There are many trees like these among the woods; far and near such may be seen rising from the hills, now tossing their arms in the stormy winds, now drawn in still and dark relief against the glowing evening sky. Their gaunt, upright forms standing about the hill-tops, and the ragged gray stumps of those which have fallen, dotting the smooth fields, make up the sterner touches in a scene whose general aspect is smiling. But although these old trees are common upon the wooded heights, yet the group on the skirts of the valley stands alone among the fields of the valley; their nearer brethren have all been swept away, and these are left in isolated company, differing in character from all about them, a monument of the past. It is upon a narrow belt of land, a highway and a corn-field on one side, a brook and an orchard on the other, that these trees are rooted; a strip of woodland connected with the forest on the hills above, and suddenly cut off where it approaches the first buildings of the village. There they stand, silent spectators of the wonderful changes that have come over the valley. Hundreds of winters have passed since the cones which contained the seed of that grove fell from the parent tree; centuries have elapsed since their heads emerged from the topmost wave of the sea of verdure to meet the sunshine, and yet it is but yesterday that their shadows first fell, in full length, upon the sod at their feet.

J ames Fenimore Cooper's daughter, Susan, assembled this volume of excerpts, arranged chronologically and individually introduced with essays. According to Susan Fenimore Cooper's recollections, her father wrote important sections of The Last of the Mohicans while deliriously ill. She also details Cooper's difficult search for real native models in an increasingly industrialized area of New England. The overall tone of the work is adoring, but insights are provided on Cooper as a man and as a writer. The book is illustrated from steel and wood engravings from the original illustrations of Cooper's works. The Bible Homer Aristophanes Virgil ... Special Collections Home Page

Coming of Age: Gendered Perspectives July 13 - 17, 2003 State University of New York College at Oneonta “The spirit of Leather-Stocking is awake” The 14th International James Fenimore Cooper Conference and Seminar is a biennial event held at the State University College at Oneonta. This gathering is unique because it brings together established scholars, interested researchers, and students of American literature with an interest in Cooper and his times. The four-day professional conference is linked with a team-taught undergraduate course that focuses upon the conference theme. Students and researchers attend conference presentations and other gatherings in a setting familiar to those who have read the Leatherstocking novels. In addition to supporting the Cooper Conference every two years, The SUNY College at Oneonta also hosts a website for the James Fenimore Cooper Society. The Fourteenth Cooper Seminar
13-17 July, 2003
Oneonta and Cooperstown, New York
WHAT IS THE COOPER SEMINAR? The James Fenimore Cooper Seminar is a four-day conference devoted to the life and work of J.F. Cooper and Susan Fenimore Cooper, his daughter. The Seminar, which began in 1978, is held in the Milne Library at the College of Oneonta but involves field trips and festive occasions and includes a guided visit to Cooperstown, the village founded by his father where James Fenimore Cooper spent more than half his life and writing career. In conjunction with the Seminar is a summer-school course offered for graduate and undergraduate credit in English and History. For participants and presenters the conference begins on Sunday night, July 13, 2003, with a complimentary dinner (including a drink or two!) and a welcome. The next morning presentation of papers and the summer school commence. That evening Allan Axelrad will deliver the keynote address. This year’s Seminar will bring scholars from all over the United States as well as from several foreign countries. Each year of the biannual conference has had its own character. Beginning in 1997 an emphasis on shorter papers and younger scholars developed. This year the focus is on coming of age and gender issues in two texts: The Deerslayer and Susan Cooper’s Elinor Wyllys . In earlier years, and until his death in 1985, James F. Beard, editor of the six-volume letters and prime mover in the re-publication by SUNY Press of newly edited texts of Cooper works, was a regular lecturer. Others who have written extensively on Cooper who have lectured at the Seminar include Kay House, Thomas Philbrick, Donald Ringe, Warren Walker, Lesley Fiedler, James Wallace and Geoffrey Rans. Each Seminar is followed by the publication of the papers presented, edited by Hugh McDougall, President of the J.F. Cooper Society.

nature writer By Amy Stahl As a literary scholar, it’s not often that Albertson College English professor Rochelle Johnson finds herself peering into trunks containing hidden treasures. Yet two years ago, Johnson opened an aged leather chest filled with letters and manuscripts by 19th century writer Susan Fenimore Cooper. The surprise discovery has given Johnson rich new material for her research into the life of Cooper, one of America’s first female nature writers, the daughter of writer James Fenimore Cooper and the author of a book titled Rural Hours A popular success at the turn of the century yet virtually unknown today, Rural Hours pre-dated Henry David Thoreau’s classic Walden by four years. Rural Hours was such a hit with 19th century readers it went through nine editions yet the full text of the book was out of print for over 100 years. Johnson admits she was unfamiliar with Susan Fenimore Cooper until unexpectedly stumbling across references to the author and Rural Hours in a required text for a graduate class. “I had never heard of her. But I wanted to know who she was because I was very interested in Thoreau.” Further intrigued, Johnson began researching Cooper’s life and work. “Her book went through nine editions,” says Johnson. “I wanted to know who was reading it and what else she wrote.”
