Besprechung von Elmar Krekeler a us Die Welt Jippie hei yeah. Jippie hei yohoh

"Robert Coover writes his first novel as if he doesn't expect to make it to a second. Everything goes into it, including plots for several grim short stories and more social novels . . . If he can somehow control his Hollywood giganticism and focus his vision of life, he may become heir to Dreiser or Lewis."

The Pleasures of the Difficult Jonathan Baumbach In the distorting light of immediate impression, one's own period tends to seem more extreme than any other, our deficiencies more egregious. This literary moment's persuasive illusion is that fewer works that challenge the reader's skills are being read. The reasons may be beside the point, though they are everywhere apparent. Impatience seems high on the list. We want immediate payoffs for our commitments of time and concentration. Fiction, suggests the evidence, tends to be used more and more as a licit form of drug abuse. The difficult in fiction has a variety of faces. There are opaque surfaces, obscure diction, work that is challenging conceptually. There are also fictions that appear simple that are deceptively elusive. Difficult fiction is not, as has been assumed, less emotionally compelling than readily accessible work. The fiction I'm talking about tends to resist easy manipulation, does not wear its emotional life on its sleeve. It's arguable, of course, but I'm not alone in thinking that the most original fiction in America of the last three decades comes by and large from the difficult writers on the postmodernists panel at Brown ten years ago.

    DE L'ARTISTA
    Robert Coover

    ABOUT THE BOOK
In Understanding Robert Coover, In this comprehensive study, Evenson discusses Coover's novels from his award-winning first book, The Origin of the Brunists, to his controversial The Public Burning Pricksongs and Descants, Pinocchio in Venice, and Briar Rose, as well as the revisionary western Ghost Town . Evenson also looks at Coover's latest novel, The Adventures of Lucky Pierre: Raw Footage Evenson explicates Coover's rewriting of myths and explores his willingness to break the frame of his fiction so as to include both fantastic and realistic elements. Evenson also show that, for Coover, storymaking is essential to what makes us human, and for that reason his ideas remain at the heart of what makes literature dynamic and intriguing. Understanding Robert Coover addresses these issues and explicates Coover's often difficult and formally innovative fiction.

Depending on which page you open it to, Robert Coover's sprawling 1977 novel The Public Burning may appear to be any one of a great many things: an expose of a miscarriage of injustice; a fictional memoir of Richard M. Nixon; an analysis of occult elements in public space and government rites; a historical novel about the Eisenhower era; a comic-book battle between a fantastic superhero and supervillain; or a far-reaching critique of a nation so caught up in its own fears and hysterical rhetoric that it can no longer honor its own ideals. It is testament to Coover's immense skills as a writer that his novel succeeds at being all of these things, and ends up, in fact, transcending the sum of its formidable parts. The Public Burning takes as its topic the execution of ``atomic spies'' Julius and Ethel Rosenberg clemency movement , including such figures as Albert Einstein and Jean-Paul Sartre, a movement which in many ways prefigures the Mumia Abu-Jamal movement of today.

University at Albany's Uptown Campus Afternoon Seminar, 4:00 p.m., in LC 25 Robert Coover has been hailed by The New York Times as "a one-man Big Bang of exploding creative force." His latest novel, John's Wife , was released in April 1996 on the thirtieth anniversary of his first novel The Origin of the Brunists (1966) which won the William Faulkner Award for the best first novel. Coover's other works include the novels The Public Burning (1977), a "factional" account of the conviction and execution in 1953 of alleged spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; Gerald's Party (1986), and Pinocchio in Venice (1991); and the short story collections Picksongs and Descants In Bed One Night and Other Brief Encounters (1983), and A Night at the Movies (1987) which won the Rea Award for the Short Story. Coover, respected and praised for his versatility and inventiveness, produces works which blur the distinction between fantasy and reality. Time magazine's Paul Gray said that Coover has won a "reputation as an avant-gardist who can do with reality what a magician does with a pack of cards: shuffle the familiar into unexpected patterns."

    The End of Books
Date: June 21, 1992, Sunday, Late Edition - Final Byline: By Robert Coover
IN the real world nowadays, that is to say, in the world of video transmissions, cellular phones, fax machines, computer networks, and in particular out in the humming digitalized precincts of avant-garde computer hackers, cyberpunks and hyperspace freaks, you will often hear it said that the print medium is a doomed and outdated technology, a mere curiosity of bygone days destined soon to be consigned forever to those dusty unattended museums we now call libraries. Indeed, the very proliferation of books and other print-based media, so prevalent in this forest-harvesting, paper-wasting age, is held to be a sign of its feverish moribundity, the last futile gasp of a once vital form before it finally passes away forever, dead as God.
Which would mean of course that the novel, too, as we know it, has come to its end. Not that those announcing its demise are grieving. For all its passing charm, the traditional novel, which took center stage at the same time that industrial mercantile democracies arose and which Hegel called "the
