From the moment The Chocolate War, a coruscating attack on intimidation and corruption in an American catholic school, was published in 1974, the author Robert Cormier, who has died aged 75, was continually raising the stakes about what could be written about for young readers. His position was simple: "There are no taboos," he told the Guardian this summer in what was to be one of his final interviews. "Every topic is open, however shocking. It is the way that the topics are handled that's important, and that applies whether it is a 15-year-old who is reading your book or someone who is 55."

Cormier's reputation as a fine writer of Young Adult fiction is widely acknowledged. Beyond that, he deserves recognition as a major writer of the past 25 years, period. His omission from such books as The Oxford Companion to American Literature is heinous.
You've lived the whole of your life in Leominster, and have been in the same house for over 40 years. Why? I think I like that sense of security and that sense ofit sounds like a clichebut roots. When I was young growing up, I thought that to be a writer I had to travel the world, and have all these experiences. Then at some point... I think it goes back to the adventures of Tom Sawyer... that was the first book I really ever owned that wasn't a text book... my godmother gave it to me when I was 11 or 12. Tom Sawyer with his adventures, painting the fence... I sorta realised that there was drama right there in my own neighbourhood. I've thought about that since. At the time it occurred it wasn't a lightning bolt, but I've always been conscious of not having to travel that far. The legends I heard when I was a child, the strikes at the shops were very dramatic to me. Then I'd read

Review
Denny's father is being harassed by late night phone calls and letters which he seems to accept with an odd kind of passivity. When he was sixteen, he was an usher in a theater where twenty-two children were killed and, althoug he was absolved of all blame for the disaster, some think he was at fault. Now Denny is sixteen and is himself being harassed and seduced by a mysterious voice on the telephone. He needs to understand his father, a good but uncommunicative man, and he needs to face himself before he faces others. Like all Cormier's work, the tone is ominous, and the suspense propels the reader toward the climax.

You are currently visiting the ACLU online archives. These pages are not updated. For the latest information from the ACLU, go to http://www.aclu.org January 10, 1997: The People v. Robert Cormier? In a time when information has become an increasingly valuable commodity, the library is the only place where information remains practically free, the Oklahoma Gazette reports in a cover story on a local library controversy. As Oklahoma County's Metropolitan Library System works to meet demands for information, some citizens are working to limit the availability of resources. Members of Oklahomans for Children and Families, an Oklahoma City-based group, have charged that some of the library's materials are obscene and pornographic. According to library policy, however, the Metropolitan Library System does not hold books judged illegal under Oklahoma law. Members of OCAF, with the support of the Virginia-based Family Friendly Libraries (FFL), have protested five books at Metropolitan Library Commission meetings for the past four months, asking that they be removed from the general collection and placed in a restricted area, such as behind the circulation desk. None of the books are shelved in the children's section. In his 38 years of library work, MLS director Lee Brawner says he has always heard complaints about library materials, but never in a way so organized as groups such as OCAF and FFL.

Analysis
The Chocolate War
By: Robert Cormier
4 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War . After reading the last word and closing the book, I wanted to read the novel again without the knowledge of what would happen. This story is similar to Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Thomas Baird's Smart Rats , although these books were not about the same situations, they gave me comparable thoughts and feelings. These works do not have fairy tale endings and are not about happy, contented people. The Chocolate War is unlike the humorous novel Squashed by Joan Bauer. I read Squashed purely for entertainment. There are no deep themes or tension in Squashed like in The Chocolate War , whereas every word Robert Cormier wrote increases the suspense for the last scene. I read this book off and on for three days and could not put it down. This book is so well written I liked almost everything about the story. I particularly liked the characterization of Brother Jacques. He has a small part. and represents noble qualities in people. Unlike Brother Leon, he does not favor the Vigils. Brother Jacques is the only teacher who cares about his students. The setting is split between the protagonist's home and hos school. The majority of the time he is at school. One particular scene is extremely vivid, the description of the athletic field is full and complete. The stadium is packed and raffle tickets are being sold, And is the center there is a boxing ring. The crowd is loud and raucous, waiting for the event to begin. These descriptions increase the apprehension. This is my favorite part of the novel.
