NEPOS, CORNELIUS
NEPOMUK—NEPTUNE inscriptions. The cathedral was burnt down by the French in 1789 and restored in 1831. A mile and a half E.N.E. is the Romanesque church of S Elia, founded about A.D. 1000, with frescoes of the period. It contains a pulpit of the time of Pope Gregory IV. (827-844), the sculptures:of which are scattered about the church (F. Mazzanti in Nuovo Bollettino d'Archaeologia Cristiana, 1806, 34)- Nepet had become Roman before 386 B.C., when Livy speaks of it and Sutrium as the keys of Etruria. In that year it was surrendered to the Etruscans and recovered by the Romans, who beheaded the authors of its surrender. It became a colony in 383 B.C. It was among the twelve Latin colonies that refused further help to Rome in 209 B.C. After the Social War it became a municipium. It is hardly mentioned in imperial times, except as a station on the road (Via Amerina) which diverged from the Via Cassia near the modern Settevene and ran to Ameria and Tuder. In the 8th century A.D. it was for a short while the seat of a dukedom. See G. Dennis, Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria (London, 1883, i. 82). (T. As.)

ALTE GESCHICHTE Prof. Dr. Eckart Olshausen TITEL: Geschichte Roms unter den Iulisch-Claudischen Kaisern (27 v. Chr. – 68 n. Chr.) VORLESUNG ZEIT: Di. 11.30 – 13.00 Uhr ORT: M 5.206 (Breitscheidstr.

Nepos, Cornelius c.100 b.c. -c.25 b.c. , Roman historian. He was an intimate friend of Pomponius Atticus, Cicero, and Catullus. His only extant work is a collection of biographies, mostly from a lost larger work, De viris illustribus [on illustrious men]. The general method was to compare the lives of great Roman and non-Roman leaders. Nepos wrote in a popular manner in clear and simple Latin; his work was sometimes inaccurate, but significant in the history of biography writing.

Talking philosophy, taking little part in public affairs, he encompassed his "ideal" into his life. Hermarchus Metrodorus (331 - 278 BC) Polyaenus (? - 278 BC) Diogenes Laertius (3rd cen. BC): Born in Celicia, Diogenes went on to become the most famous philosophical historian of his era. His biography of Epicurus sets itself above his other works in its complexity and detail. Lucretius (98 - 55 BC): Roman poet and philosopher, his contribution was to free men's minds of superstition and fear of death. His focus was more on the law than earlier Epicureans, but he was erudite in transmitting their physics and psychology. He was the first Epicurean to write in Latin. Horace Lucian (120 - 180 CE): Born in what is now Turkey, Lucian went on to become a preeminent Greek writer and rhetorician. As inventor of satiric dialogue, Lucian was a precursor of such note satirists as Swift and Orwell.
