by Robert Creeley Gregory Corso died last night (January 17), happily in his sleep in Minnesota. He had been ill for much of the past year but had recovered from time to time, saying that he'd got to the classic river but lacked the coin for Charon to carry him over. So he just dipped his toes in the water. In this time his daughter Sherry, a nurse, had been a godsend to him, securing him, steadying the ambiance, just minding the store with great love and clarity. He thought she should get Nurse of the Year recognition at the very least. There's no simple generalization to make of Gregory's life or poetry. There are all too many ways to displace the extraordinary presence and authority he was fact of. Last time we talked, he made the useful point that only a poet could say he or she was a poet only they knew. Whereas a philosopher, for instance, needed some other to say that that was what he or she was un(e) philosophe! poets themselves had to recognize and initiate their own condition. There are several quick websites that help recall him now. One gives a brief biography and discussion of a few of his poems:

Gregory Corso, the only major Beat writer to have the forethought to actually be born on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village , was sent to prison on a robbery charge at the age of 16. He probably would not have made poetry his life's work if he had not met Allen Ginsberg in a Greenwich Village Bar when he was 20. Ginsberg was impressed by the poetry Corso had written in prison and alerted others to his talent. Corso's first poems were published in 1955. He went on to become one of the most well-known and widely-read Beat poets. He has an anarchic style similar to Ginsberg's, though his favorite poet is Shelley, a Romantic poet who was much too flowery for most Beats. He does not write with Ginsberg's massive intelligence or protean poetic power, but then who does? He once wrote a love-poem to atomic weapons, 'BOMB ', in the shape of a mushroom cloud. Gregory Corso, Beat Poet
By Barbara Stufflebeem
For readers of a certain age, the death of Gregory Corso is as unpleasant a reminder of the passage of time as watching Bob Dylan thank the Academy. Corso was the royal jester of the Beat Generation with his philosophy of free verse, free love, and free drinks (he was a notorious cheapskate). As recently as the 1990s, he could be seen cavorting with Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern in California, and appearing at Marc Smith’s famous poetry “slams” in Chicago. The redemptive capacity of the literal and literary bender was an idea that Corso and others inspired in the American imagination, with such success that the idea is now universal. The image of the hairy, drunken, satyr-like declaimer of absurd verse continues to inform many people’s ideas of what poets and poetry are all about. This Rabelaisian vision emerged at the dawn of what many have called the most oppressive era in American history, the 1950s. The iron grip of conformity was bound to prompt some reaction, and Corso and company responded to the challenge with enthusiasm. In the words of one bemused literary historian, “The character of reality in the postwar world can be described as one of disruptive chaos and equally disruptive organization.” It was the Beatniks’ gift to realize that organization was disruptive. Most of the country was under the opposite impression. A flood of advertising depicted hordes of clean-living, right-thinking youth returning from war to flock obediently into orderly compounds to start work, marry, and raise 2.4 children. The world was ripe for revolution.

T he pictures of Allen eating at the breakfast table, of Allen and Gregory Corso in the kitchen, of Allen and Peter Orlovsky in the living room, were all taken in April 1973. They were here for a Kerouac festival at Salem State College. Characteristically, their arrival was a surprise. Ilene, Ed Lang, and I had spent the whole day making Ilene's movie. Harvey and I were in a distance period. I was tired and cranky. No, I didn't want to go out for supper with Ilene and Ed. I was going to bed. As if sensing that I needed to be distracted from any self-pity, the steam pipes in my cellar burst. All of a sudden I heard this rushing water. Unmistakable. I had to find the plumber on a Saturday night, turn off the oil furnace, do something about the mess. I sat in the kitchen figuring out what to do next. There was a hard knock at the door. The plumber so soon'! No. Peter Orlovsky. God couldn't have been more provident. I think the miracle of old friends is that they do come, as if by sonar when you need perking up; surely if you keep things going, cast enough nets as Paul Blackhurn would say, things will happen. So there we were, the three of us huddled in my freezing kitchen waiting for the plumber. Allen was in a cast up to his hip from slipping on the ice in Cherry Valley. Peter was waging his campaign against smoking and wearing his Vietnam T-shirt. Bustling like a white tornado. Full of high cheer. Scouring my sink. Oh Ellie, naughty, naughty, a dirty sink. Well, at least no ciggies. What are all these papers'! Do you read all these magazines?

Introduction When the Special Collections Department opened its doors in 1969, there was already established the solid beginnings of a manuscript collection. Several members of the English Department had encouraged the purchase of a number of collections, which eventually led toward the establishment of the department. Roger H. Guedalla and George Quasha were among the people who had been instrumental in purchasing a Modern Literature collection, which contained books and manuscripts focusing on the extraordinary group of authors and poets who had been involved with Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Many of these manuscripts are now housed with the Historic and Literary Manuscript Collection (MC 100), and include original materials by Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Fielding Dawson. Scope and Content The collection is arranged alphabetically by author and is comprised of 3.6 cubic feet of manuscripts and documents, including single items and small groups of materials of local, national, and world interest (ca. 1819-1989). The folder contents include letters, correspondence, articles, stories, plays, and legal materials.

Career of Gregory Corso (1930 - )
American poet and author, Gregory Corso was born in New York City in 1930. In and out of jails as a youth, Corso is largely self-taught through his extensive reading and travel. An influential member of the Beat generation, Corso is closely associated with Allen Ginsberg, whom he first met in New York in 1950. His first published poems appeared in the

Whoops, There Goes Another Rubber Tree Plant!
A Remembrance By Cat DeLeon A light went out on January 18th, 2001. You may not realize this, but the essence of rock n' roll, the Grand Daddy-O of rebellion, the little Lucifer who made a mockery of convention, left us to travel the ultimate road, and be-bop forever in the land of kicks. The last of the original Beat Daddies, the youngest of the Big Four New York Beats (Kerouac, Ginsburg, Burroughs and Corso), Gregory Corso died from prostate cancer in Minnesota at the age of 70. Corso had the lowest profile of the four but was actually the living embodiment of all that was professed by the Beat Generation and would later transmute into true rock and roll sensibility. Upon his release from prison, Corso met Allen Ginsburg in a Greenwich Village tavern, showed him his poems, and was recognized as a talent to reckon with. Ginsburg may have coasted after "Howl" and perpetuated his career as a hanger-on and political figure head, but one thing I do give him credit for is turning Corso on to surrealism and language play and introducing Corso to the esteemed Columbia University Professor and Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Mark Van Doren (father of the quiz show scandal contestant Charles Van Doren) who was an advocate for Corso and helped him become published by the age of 20.
