"You never heard about people 'not having lives' until about five years ago, just when all of the '80s technologies really penetrated our lives," says a techno-geek in Douglas Coupland's wonderful new novel, Microserfs. He lists them:
"VCRs tape rentals PCs modems answering machines touch tone dialling cellular phones cordless phones call screening phone cards ATMs fax machines Federal Express bar coding cable TV satellite TV CDs calculators of almost other-worldly power that are so cheap that they practically come free with a tank of gas"
Each of these objects added pleasure and/or convenience to lives that had previously only been enriched by relationships and television, says Coupland in one of those debatable remarks that fill his novel. I mean, life hasn't changed intrinsically since 1976. It's just faster and better.

Interview with Douglas Coupland
by Alexander Laurence
(c) 1994 Douglas Coupland is a lucid Canadian writer who loves nature. He reminded me of that fact. "Whenever I smoked pot in high school it was always around nature." He is the author of three books: Generation X, Shampoo Planet, and most recently, Life After God. His new book of short stories and drawings describes the mental framework of someone who grew up in a secular environment. Coupland is a frequent contributor for The New Republic, The New York Times, and Wired. For Wired he recently wrote "Microserfs" which was about Bill Gates and the Microsoft company. Coupland was born on December 30, 1961 in a NATO base in West Germany. He now lives in Vancouver, where he grew up. He claims that the most important images in his life were Marcia Brady, The Poseidon Adventure, and Patty Hearst. His story, "Patty Hearst," recalls the days of her captivity in a Western Addition room in San Francisco. One of the Baudrillard-like comments by Coupland in his new book explores his new view of memory: "I believe that you've had most of your important memories by the time you're thirty. After that, memory becomes water overflowing into an already full cup." Coupland, as a writer, has always been short on character and psychology, and big on ideas and conceptual things. Many excerpts from his new book, can be seen on MTV. He may be one of the few contemporary writers who is guilty of too much thinking.

Life after LIFE AFTER GOD
Life After God zu ergattern.

By Joshua Klein If he had never published another book after 1992's Generation X , Douglas Coupland would forever be part of history: By coining that ubiquitous term, he was among the first to give that demographic a voice. But while marketing departments worldwide never made it past the title, Coupland's writing continues: He has written six books, including Shampoo Planet and Microserfs , in seven years; his latest novel, Girlfriend In A Coma , was conceived after a personal breakdown following an ill-fated European book tour. Coupland recently spoke to The Onion from his hotel room in St. Louis, expounding upon writing, TV, Karen Ann Quinlan, and starting life anew. The Onion: You still live in Vancouver, right? Douglas Coupland: Oh, yeah. I probably always will. O: Is it as beautiful as everyone says? DC: You know what? It probably is. You're catching me at a homesick moment, here. O: After your last book tour, you were depressed... DC: That's putting it mildly.

Glauben Sie mir: Das hilft."

A Couple of Hyped Guys Sitting Around Talking
Two icons of a mediated generation discuss celebrity, technology, and solitude as the ultimate radical act.

By John Battelle Since the almost concurrent 1991 releases of their generationally defining works, Slacker and Generation X, director Richard Linklater and author Douglas Coupland have followed roughly similar career cycles. Rich's Dazed and Confused and Doug's Shampoo Planet and Life after God engendered little of the marketing feeding frenzy of their predecessors, but neither Rich nor Doug could entirely escape being influenced by it. Their upcoming works - Doug's novel, based on "Microserfs" (which first appeared in these pages last January), and Rich's film, Before Sunrise, about two strangers who meet while traveling in Europe - will both début next year. Doug and Rich seem so numb to the hype around their generational voices that discussing even the deconstruction of that myth is taxing for them. If others glom onto their thoughts, they say, so be it. Fine. Hollywood and New York, the film and publishing worlds, wooed them both after their first works came out, and while each had the chance to sport Armani suits and live in the land of fabulous parties, neither bit. Doug stayed in Vancouver; Rich stuck to Austin. Doug never sold his books to Hollywood, and Rich has yet to direct a Terminator spinoff.

59. CBC 4 Kids: Douglas Coupland
The term Generation X comes from the title of a book by Canadian authordouglas coupland. douglas Germany. The Lab. douglas coupland.
http://www.cbc4kids.cbc.ca/general/words/author-of-the-month/199902/coupland.htm
Douglas Coupland
If you watch TV, listen to the radio, or read magazines you have probably heard the term Generation X. But have you ever wondered what the term means, or where it came from? While he didn't invent the term, Canadian author Douglas Coupland popularized it by using it as the title of one of his books. Generation X refers to the kids born just after the baby boom. Baby Boomers are that huge generation of people born between the end of the Second World War and the late '50s. Baby Boomers grew up to be today's yuppies. Gen X'ers are said to be depressed because they feel that the baby boomers took all the best jobs, bought all the houses, and left the X'ers with nothing but debt and a threatened environment. Coupland’s novel, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture , follows the lives of Andy, Clair, and Dag. These three "twenty-somethings" are overeducated and underemployed. They have left their empty lives in the city and moved to Palm Springs, California, where they work at low-paying "McJobs." They doubt everything and everybody, including themselves. In their spare time (which is almost all of the time) they tell each other made-up stories about their far-off relatives, long-ago jobs, and planets where the year is always 1974.  These modern-day fairy tales reveal the storytellers' lives, and often have heavy moral conclusions.

I won't even lend his books to everyone; there's a screening process involved. His particular combination of social awareness, beautiful poetry as prose, and impressions of existence as an outcast are reserved solely for the like-natured. Read him! If you don't like what you read, don't tell anyone, as it surely reflects poorly on you. Because of what you wrote I will be popping down the library to get one of D Coupland's books. It's good to see someone with passion for books like me.
