Home page and index One of the more unrewarding experiences you can have within the urban landscape is the business of selling your home. Building a home is said to be the number one cause of nervous breakdowns and the number two of divorce. Selling your home is somewhere in the top 10 causes of modern-day urban stress. Having recently sold my house for less than the real estate bloke told me I'd get and more than I had a right to expect, I have evolved several grass-roots marketing principles. While too late for me, they may be useful to you if the roof over your head is about to be sold, in order to keep you in a future manner to which you have no right to become accustomed. These are not rules, they are simply marketing ideas that could make the difference.

BRYCE Courtenay reluctantly confesses that he spent a couple of hours crawling through Sydney's botanic garden "looking at the world from 18 inches" so that he could bring a moggy's perspective to his latest novel Matthew Flinders' Cat (Viking, $45). "Thank God only one gardener saw me," laughs the 69-year-old author on the eve of a national promotional tour which will bring him to Adelaide next week. Those madcap moments in the botanic gardens, though, were the only light-hearted hours Courtenay had during the months he spent researching and writing his story of a drunk, a boy and cat. He found it "a pretty tough book to write", having to tackle both technical and emotional challenges. From a writerly point of view, he had set himself the task of melding a modern story of rehabilitation with the 200-year-old story of Matthew Flinders' circumnavigation of Australia. The contemporary tale centres on the friendship of a once-prominent barrister, now a "derro", and a boy, the son of a junkie mother, on the cusp of turning feral. Billy, the derro, and the boy, Ryan, meet in gardens adjacent to the NSW State Library where Billy camps on a bench below a library window in which the bronze statue of Flinders' cat, Trim, rests. The relationship between the misfits grows as Billy excites Ryan's imagination with Flinders' story told from Trim's perspective. "The problem was," says Courtenay, "that at one moment I was writing about the here and now and then I needed to bounce back 200 years to Flinders. The mood swings and the contextual swings were enormous. You find yourself wondering if you are writing two books."

Chicken Soup Farts
(from Bryce Courtenay's The Potato Factory and with thanks and appreciation to Maggie Owens for calling my attention to this reference.)
In this saga of Australia's beginnings, Bryce Courtenay tells the story of Ikey Solomon, an English criminal in the first half of the 19th century, who makes the harsh journey from London to the convict settlement of Van Dieman's Land in Australia. It is when Ikey flees London and temporarily lands in New York City that he and the author reflect on their assumptions of what it means to be Jewishincluding the birthright of chicken soup: As an English Jew Ikey had assumed that he would fit in snugly enough. After all, the Jews of his world were street traders and merchants and of a naturally talkative and friendly disposition with the inclination to congregate together, marry among themselves, and on those several pious occasions such as Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kuppur to share their faith. They would also attend synogogue on the Sabbath as brothers according to the ancient laws of Abraham, the prophets and the rabbinical creed. Being a Jew, while being a matter of religion and orthodoxy, was also one of temperament. A Jew does not expect any but his own kind to understand him. Being Jewish is not something you wear outwardly like a badge, rather it is something you feel inwardly. It is as if your heart beats to a different cadence. This is as true of the Jew who is a villain as it is of one who is a rabbi. The smell of a chicken soup fart with noodles is absolutely one hundred per cent unmistakably Jewish. If you should be making chicken soup, delicious chicken soup, and you wish to make it Jewish, maybe you could try making these noodles.

Book Review:
"Smokey Joe's Cafe"
by Bryce Courtenay, Penguin, Australia, 2001 A group of Australian diggers, veterans of the Vietnam war, get together to hatch a scheme to get their own back on an ungrateful government. This is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad yarn about some of the survivors of the Battle of Long Tan. Thommo returns from Vietnam, unloved and unwanted by his country, and develops complicated physical and mental problems which officialdom refuses to attribute to his war service. He marries Wendy who stoically puts up with his behaviour, and they have a daughter. At three years of age she develops leukaemia, and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive, and again the government refuses to acknowledge that it might be a result of his Vietnam service. Angry and alone, seeking moments of peace in the bottle and the weed, he meets with ten of his mates, most of the remnants of his old platoon who survived Long Tan, and they hatch their plan. They are joined by an ex-Viet Cong whose comrades and family suffer the same symptoms from the same war, and by Wendy, who adds logic and passion to their sometimes fuddled thinking. She helps moulds them, and a large cast of supporting vets, into a unit fighting for justice and maybe a bit of revenge.

Unlikely twins in an unlikely place
By YVONNE CRITTENDEN Toronto Sun
TOMMO AND HAWK
Bryce Courtenay
Bryce Courtenay, a South African now living in Australia, made his name with best-selling novels like The Power Of One and The Potato Factory, the latter about the convict beginnings of Australia. This continues the story of unlikely twin boys, one white, one black, born to a prostitute and raised by a convict woman who has made her fortune in New South Wales in breweries. Tommo and Hawk are grown men, trying to erase the difficulties of their childhoods. Tommo is a small, pugnacious white Cockney, Hawk, huge, black and gentle. They participate in Maori wars in New Zealand, the miners' riots in the Australian goldfields, and all the struggles that beset a new country trying to sort out its identity. As it is now, Australia of this period is confused about its future. Courtenay relates Aussie history as it turns from being a place of convict origins and poor migrant settlers into a multiracial society with differing sets of values. A rich historical yarn.

Bryce Courtenay is writer extraordinaire who manages to convey the poetic prose, music, mythology, psychology, religious diversity, yes and more - the very essence or soul of contemporary Africa. A coming of age tale, these 500 plus pages will enchant every reader and make you laugh, weep and praise the dignity of every human being who strives to live from that "higher" place of one's being. Meet Granpa Chook, a most unusual chicken who embodies the "fighting" spirit, Hoppie who teaches Peekay to fight with his head and heart, Doc who lives and teaches the love of the African land in all its wondrous botanical and geological beauty as well as a piercing honesty and analytical surveying of all experience, Geel Piet who embodies and teaches how to fight and love while using and surmounting a terrifyingly absolute rejection, and numerous other characters who flesh out the virtues and vices within every facet of life and learning.
