Local contractor reaches new heights Bristol based Cowlin Construction will next week reveal the hot air balloon they have sponsored. Nick Higgs, Managing Director of the Bristol office, said "We are reaching unprecedented levels in terms of contracts and work won in the region and this venture reflects the buoyant mood of the company at the moment. As most other construction companies look up to us, we felt that this would be a perfect way of advertising the company name." The Cowlin balloon was made by Lindstrand Balloons and will be piloted by Andrew Holly of the Gloucestershire based company Exclusive Ballooning, holders of the UK Counties Champion title for the last four years. The balloon can be seen in the skies over the local area in the next few weeks from a variety of launch sites. Business levels continue to rise for Cowlin to strengthen their position as the leading privately owned contractor in the South West with recent new contracts throughout their three offices in the region. This
over 60% of turnover already accounted for. Cowlin are seeing a significant upturn in negotiated work and expect that to increase over the coming months."

    Gardener's question time
by Gazette Reporters A LUCKY Ryedale woman's garden will be blooming this time next year - and it'll be thanks in no small part to expert gardener Paul Radcliffe. Anna Rowntree has "won" him for one day in a raffle and is looking forward to receiving some invaluable advice on which plants and flowers she should use. The raffle was organised by the Helmsley Walled Garden, where Mr Radcliffe is based. Mrs Rowntree, who lives in Kirkbymoorside, said: "I was absolutely astounded because they sold over 800 tickets and I never expected to win. "I am hoping he will be advising me and helping me to put some plants in. I won £25 of plants so hopefully he will put forward some suggestions." Town of thieves? Don't make me laugh!
by Emma Edmunds HAPPY WORKER: John Milburn, who works for Pond Cottage Antiques, waxing and finishing furniture. What kind of people would turn their backs on a drowning vicar? A town of thieves, perhaps? The poor residents of Stillington have been accused on both counts on separate occasions - but, thankfully, not recently. The `town of thieves' label or `stealing town' came from historian Thomas Gill in his 1853 history book. He stated that the town made its money by "robbing the king's forest of its deer, and the packman of their merchandise". Much to everyone's relief, this was quickly disproved as, although the village does lie within what until 1630 was the Royal Forest of Galtres, the name Stillington is much older than both William the Conqueror and the forest laws which made it an offence to take deer. Mind you, in the church of St Nicholas, above the chancel step, is the Royal Coat of Arms dated 1739. It was ordered by George II and is extremely rare, displayed only in churches where parishioners were of doubtful allegiance. As for the drowning vicar tale, well the particular man-of-the-cloth in question was the famous novelist Laurence Sterne (of Tristram Shandy fame) who became vicar in 1745. Although revered in London literary circles and idolised by Parisian society, he never quite hit it off with the folks of Stillington.
