    William Cowper, Mary Unwin, and John Newton collection. 1773-1824. 4 manuscripts (3 by Cowper and 1 by Newton) and 4 letters. William Cowper, English poet, was born at his father's rectory at Great Berkhampstead on 15 November 1731. He was educated at Westminster College and called to the bar in 1754. Following a spell of mental instability, bouts of which were to plague him for the rest of his life, he went to live at Huntingdon with the Revd. Morely Unwin, his wife, Mary (b. 1724) and their son William, who by then was away from home. On the death of Unwin, Mary moved to Olney in Buckinghamshire with Cowper. The curate in Olney, John Newton, collaborated with Cowper in the writing of the Olney Hymns (1779) after which he moved to London. Under Mrs. Unwin's influence, Cowper wrote a series of moral satires, published in 1782 as

    Reflections on the Life of William Cowper
    Bethlehem Conference for Pastors
    January 29, 1992
    Why Cowper?
    There are at least three reasons why I have chosen to tell the story of the 18th century poet William Cowper at this year's conference. One is that ever since I was seventeen maybe before I have felt the power of poetry. I went to my file recently and found an old copy of Leaves of Grass , my High School Literary Magazine from 1964 and read the poems that I wrote for it almost 30 years ago. Then I looked at the Kodon from my Wheaton days, and remembered the poem, "One of Many Lands" that I wrote in one of my bleaker moments as a college freshman. Then I dug out The Opinion from Fuller Seminary and the Bethel Coeval from when I taught there. It hit me again what a long-time friend poetry-writing has been to me. I think the reason for this is that I live with an almost constant awareness of the breach between the low intensity of my own passion and the staggering realities of the universe around me, heaven, hell, creation, eternity, life, God. Everybody (whether they know it or not) tries to close this breach between the weakness of our emotions and the wonder of the World. Some of us to it with poetry. William Cowper did it with poetry. I think I know what he means, for example, when he writes a poem about his mother's portrait long after he death and says

    William Cowper
    English poet. The simplicity of his work and his treatment of natural subjects was in marked contrast to the sophistication of the fashionable Pope; he was an important forerunner of the Romantics, and his unfinished poem 'Yardley Oak' was particularly admired by Wordsworth. Other notable poems include 'The Poplar Trees', 'The Journey of John Gilpin' and 'The Castaway', while The Task is his most ambitious work in verse. Olney Hymns (1779) contains his popular hymns 'God moves in a mysterious way' and 'Oh, for a closer walk with God'. His autobiographical Memoir was published in 1816, and his letters have been widely appreciated, providing an intimate picture of the man.

    William Cowper, "The Snail" (1731)
    To grass, or leaf, or fruit, or wall,
    The snail sticks close, nor fears to fall,
    As if he grew there, house and all
    Together. Within that house secure he hides,
    When danger imminent betides
    Of storm, or other harm besides
    Of weather. Give but his horns the slightest touch,
    His self-collecting power is such
    He shrinks into his house with much
    Displeasure. Where'er he dwells, he dwells alone,
    Except himself has chattels none, Well satisfied to be his own Whole treasure. Thus hermit-like, his life he leads, Nor partner of his banquet needs, And if he meets one only feeds The faster. Who seeks him must be worse than blind, (He and his house are so combined,) If, finding it, he fails to find Its master.

    Sonnet to William Wilberforce, Esq.
    by William Cowper (1731-1800)
    Thy country, Wilberforce, with just disdain,
    Hears thee, by cruel men and impious, call'd
    Fanatic, for thy zeal to loose th' enthrall'd
    From exile, public sale, and slav'ry's chain.
    Friend of the poor, the wrong'd, the fetter-gall'd,
    Fear not lest labour such as thine be vain!
    Thou hast achiev'd a part; hast gain'd the ear
    Of Britain's senate to thy glorious cause;
    Hope smiles, joy springs, and tho' cold caution pause
    And weave delay, the better hour is near, That shall remunerate thy toils severe By peace for Afric, fenc'd with British laws. Sweet stream that winds through yonder glade,
    Apt emblem of a virtuous maid
    Silent and chaste she steals along,
    Far from the world's gay busy throng:
    With gentle yet prevailing force,
    Intent upon her destined course;
    Graceful and useful all she does,
    Blessing and blest where'er she goes;
    Pure-bosom'd as that watery glass,
