CRANE, STEPHEN
winter to protect them from frost, and occasionally at other seasons to destroy insect pests; but the use of spring water should be avoided. ‘the flavour of the fruit is found to be improved by growing the plants in a soil enriched with wellrotted dung, and by supplying them with less moisture than they obtain in their natural habitats. Propagation is effected by means of cuttings, of which th~ wood should be wiry in texture, and the leaves of a greenish-brown colour. In America, where, in the vicif~ty of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the cultivation of the cranberry commenced early, in the last century, wide tracts of waste land have been utilized for that purpose—low, easily flooded, marshy ground, worth originally not more than from $10 to $20 an acre, having been made to yield annually $200 or $300 worth of the fruit per acre. The yield varies between 50 and 400 bushels an acre, but 1o0 bushels, or about 35 barrels, is estimated to be the average production when the plants have begun to bear well. The approximate cranberry crop of the United States from 1890 to 1899 varied from 410,000 to 1,000,000 bushels. For literature of the’ subject see the Proceedings of the A’merican Cranberry Growers’ Association (Trenton, N. J.). There is a good article on the American cranberry in L. H. Bailey’s Cyclopaedza. of American Horticulture (I 900).

CRANE, STEPHEN. The Black Riders and Other Lines. Boston Copeland and Day 1895 12mo. (iv), 76 pp. First edition. One of 50 copies printed in green ink on Japan vellum. Crane's second book, his first collection of poetry, and the first to be published under his name, is the subject of some bibliographical debate. Stallman cites broken type and an April 1896 advertisement in The Bookman to support his claim that this issue appeared on the heels of The Red Badge of Courage; Joe Kraus, in his bibliography of Copeland and Day, locates page proofs for this and the regular issue dated March, 1895. Spine shows some toning, paper spine label lightly soiled, small split to outer front hinge, else fine in cream paper covered boards. (Stallman 2b; Kraus 20a). [ANGELO, VALENTI]. Crane, Stephen. The Red Badge of Courage. An Episode of the American Civil War. NY Random House 1931 Quarto. 142pp. One of 980 copies printed in red and black at the Grabhorn Press. With a title-page illustration, 24 headpieces, and a tailpiece by Valenti Angelo. This was the first of a series of three books which the Press contracted to do for Random House in 1931, and the only one completed. Inscribed on the colophon by Edwin Grabhorn, who notes that this copy is in an "experimental binding". Indeed, this copy is bound in black cloth with blind stamped, red suede spine, which differs from the cloth-backed blue boards noted in the bibliography. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bromer Booksellers, Inc. ; click here for further details.

BURNING HIS CANDLE STEPHEN CRANE'S LIFE WAS SHORT, INTENSELY PACKED, AND HIS TALENT WAS PRODIGIOUS
Author: By John Noel Turner Date: SUNDAY, August 23, 1998 Page: Section: Books Born in 1871, Stephen Crane came from a conventional, right-thinking Victorian family with 14 children. Yet his own life contrasted sharply with his strait-laced origins. His father was a Methodist minister who wrote tracts against novels; his mother led crusades against alcohol. Apparently, the parents were good enough to leave their work at the office, for it seems that Crane made his way without evidence of their helpful counsel. Though Crane died of consumption in 1900, when he was 28, his story is not remotely slight on the contrary, his life was full and intense. In this biography, Linda H. Davis suggests that Crane may have known very early that he had the disease. Doomed to die young, he may have made the necessary arrangements to make his few years eventful. In his early 20s, he slummed on the Bowery in New York, living a marginal and chaotic existence in artists' studios. This period supplied the material for ``Maggie: A Girl of the Streets,'' ``George's Mother,'' and several other stories. In March 1895, having finished his most celebrated work, ``The Red Badge of Courage,'' he was sent to Mexico on a reporting assignment. Looking for a little adventure, he headed off to the desert countryside with a guide. Drunken banditos with guns set upon them. As Crane led his guide galloping across the Mexican wilderness, the outcome was unclear until they encountered a patrol of militiamen, who restored order by kicking the head bandito's horse in the stomach. (The event was fictionalized in ``One Dash Horses.'')

'Sir, I exist!'
'However,' replied the universe,
'The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.' From War Is Kind Achievement A brilliant writer, Crane was dead at twenty eight. Nevertheless, in an extraordinary burst of energy, he produced two great books Maggie and The Red Badge of Courage , wrote impressive poems, and ninety pieces of short fiction. His depiction of ghetto life and the deprivation of war made him internationally well known. True to naturalism, Crane shows his characters trapped in situations which they cannot control. Still, these characters show courage and valor in the face of insurmountable adversities. Primary Works Maggie, A Girl of the Streets, The Red Badge of Courage E-Text The Black Riders
