Course Description
Modern American Poetry: the Imagists and Harlem Renaissance is a study of early Twentieth Century poets and their attempts to search for new sources and approaches to writing poetry. Both the Imagists and Harlem Renaissance poets turn away from Victorian models of poetry, seeking a new basis for the art of poetry. For the Imagists, the new approach derives from the power of images based on perception and related experiments by exploring various forms of consciousness through poetry, including Chinese, Japanese, Greek and other traditions of expression. Imagist Poets featured include: Adelaide Crapsey, E.E. Cummings, Ezra Pound, Carl Sandburg, Wallace Stevens, and William Carlos Williams. For the Harlem Renaissance poets, this is an age of celebration of the black community in Harlem, New York with a new source of their work being the shared black experience and related explosion of expressive arts in song, fine arts and literary arts. In this course we explore how these poets respond to the new milieu through their poetry and poetics. Harlem Renaissance Poets featured in this study include: Arna Bontemps, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Claude McKay, Esther Popel, Anne Spencer and Jean Toomer.

PUBLISHING SCHEDULE
Amaze: The Cinquain Journal is both a webzine and a print publication. Amaze publishes semiannually, on a continuous flow basis, as we receive submissions for each of the two issues each year.
EDITORIAL PREFERENCES
The editor of Amaze will consider all cinquains submitted for publication, but does have preferences, some more strongly held than others. Insofar as the goals and objectives of Amaze magazine are the development, promotion, and publication of cinquains in the traditional form established by Adelaide Crapsey, and the development and publication of innovative forms of the cinquain, such as mirror cinquains and cinquain cycles or sequences, the editor is looking for the highest quality poetry in support of these goals and objectives. The following is some brief guidance to the editorial preferences for publication in Amaze.
Form - Cinquains should be in the classic Crapseian 11 stress (1-2-3-4-1) and/or 22 syllable (2-4-6-8-2) form. E.g., an 11 stress poem with 21-23 syllables may be acceptable; a 22 syllable poem with 10-12 stresses may be acceptable. Unless in monosyllables (and probably even then), "word-count cinquains" are not acceptable; likewise, "themed-line cinquains" (e.g., 1=noun, 2=adjective, 3=verb, 4=feeling, 5=synonym of line 1) are not acceptable. Such "didactic cinquains" are meant for teaching grammar, etc., to small schoolchildren and are not genuine cinquains. Admittedly, some good poets have written some fine poems in didactic forms, but Amaze is not interested in promoting those forms.

WHCessay - Short Verses: Cinquain Editor's Notebook: Japanese Haiku to American Cinquain
Debra Woolard Bender
Florida, US Challenge So why
Discuss cinquain
With poets of haiku...
Or speak of any other poem
At all? The Japanese haiku has had a considerable impact on the development of poetry and other literature in the West and visa versa over the past 100 years. As poets endeavouring to write haiku in non-Japanese language, we would do well to examine and understand how the genre continues to affect literature outside Japan avoiding the pitfall of becoming so ingrown, one-sided or cliquish as to exclude the "offspring": hybrid styles, analogues, new forms and ideas influenced by haiku. The World Haiku Club has set out, as one of its core aims, to bridge the gap between haiku and non-haiku poets and their poetry. Many of us know that the imagists of the early 20th century were profoundly influenced by haiku. Doubtless, the impact of the imagists has also subtly affected our own concepts of haiku as we understand and adapt to them whenever composing in the English language.

Ancient Lullabye
It's there
upon the shore . . .
an ancient lullabye
that beckons me "come sleep and dream
once more."
naia The natural, primal rhythm of a heartbeat, breath, the surf, a song, a poem...it's there in a cinquain. Naia's cinquain. How like haiku. The ancient and new harmoniously blend and contrast all at once. Environmental nature to man's nature. Connectivity: a lullaby for babies to the sound of the ancient ocean. Repetition: a assonance of short "o's" and long "e's"; an alliteration of "s's". The womb to the sea; Mother earth...gently rocking you, lulling me, inviting us to sleep. Mystery: Where do we come from, where do we go? Wakefulness, the state between dreams. Music: Meter - rhythm; Analogy: rhyme - simile; seen/hidden-wake/sleep- life/death. West - East. On re-reading Naia's "Ancient Lullabye" cinquain, I quickly sketched out the meanings and feelings, above, brought up by my own associations. Generally unrhymed, the content of both haiku and cinquain poems may often contain an epiphany, or lend themselves to a contemplation of layered meaning or feelings implied by associations. When combined with rhythm, a feature of chant and music, the experience of epiphany, or realization, can seem even stronger. Like the Japanese haiku, American cinquain is terse fixed-form, both of which enjoy a freedom of making poetic, musical rhythms within a framework of a specific number of beats...not a tyranny of forced syllables, but a complementary framework. It is the various and natural rhythms contained within a form which afford the content of words and meaning even more depth and power.
