A Knoxville writer's book tries to make sense of Southern Lit bad-ass Harry Crews by Jesse Fox Mayshark Harry Crews That's it. No " Hello ," no " Harry Crews speaking ," just a voice that sounds clenched and very far off saying " Harry Crews It's not hard to find his phone number. Just call information in Gainesville, Fla. Getting him to talk to you is more complicated. I'm a reporter in Knoxville, I tell him. I'd like to ask him a few questions about this new book, Getting Naked With Harry Crews . It was edited by a guy here in town, and... "The interview book?" he says. He sounds a little incredulous. Uh, yeah. "I'll tell you what, buddy, I'm a little jammed up right now." Oh. "Well, we can do it. Sure, we can do it. It's just a question of when..." He trails off. I'm going out of town next Thursday, I venture. I could do it anytime between now and then. Or... "Why don't you call me when you get back?" Um, okay. Like next month sometime? "Sure." Okay, I say. Thanks. End of conversation. The thing is, next month is after my deadline. I know this. I could probably tell him this. Maybe he'd soften up. Maybe we could do the interview right now. But see, this is Harry Crews. I didn't really know anything about him before reading Getting Naked (University Press of Florida, $24.95), but now I do. I know that he has lived a life of almost unimaginable tragedy, some of it self-imposed. I know that he has fought in bars, wrecked his motorcycles, buried a son, broken his bones, and blitzed himself with drugs and drink so often and so ferociously that people who know him have been predicting his death for 20 years. He's hung out with body builders and circus freaks and Sean Penn. I also know that he writes, that "writing" itself is almost too tame a word for what comes out of him. His books are about people who are maimed and deformed, on the outside or the inside, people who do strange, unaccountable things and either live through them or don't. (Like Herman Mack in

    THE KNOCKOUT ARTIST
    Harry Crews
Manny has refine taste in exploitative violence Most people that read this book hate it. Then again most people are fucking retards. These are the same people that are responsible for such atrocities as the Macarena, the age of consent, and the near election of Al Gore. With that in mind, The Knockout Artist is a stellar, if a tinge absurd, novel about the life of a promising young black boxer with a "glass jaw" who earns a living in the subversive New Orleans underground knocking himself out with a right hook to the jaw. Our antihero protagonist, Eugene Talmadge Biggs, is a rigid anti-intellectual with a penchant for steaming piles honey-combed tripe and spoiled-sour buttermilk whose girlfriend is using him for her Masters thesis in human behavior.
I won't ruin the rest for you but I highly recommend this novel, if you can find it, because it shows an incredible skill of writing and ingenuity not often seen anymore. Harry Crews mixes a Southern sensibility into his writing that often gets him associated with Flannery O'Conner, but that's just nonsense. If anything O'Conner was pro-religious and Crews is iconoclastic. Regionalizing an author because of their background is myopic and keeps you from seeing the sublime beauty and allegory in this text. Of particular note is the section where Eugene forces his girlfriend to burn all of her notes with a gun in her mouth, rejecting her intellectualism as well as defending his right to be more than a circus animal to the freak show bourgeois.

    FEAST OF SNAKES
    Harry Crews
Manny Hates the South In Mystic Georgia there is nothing but poor white trash and stereotypical blacks who still call the poor white trash Masser. This is the home of Joe Lon Mackey, one of the most terrifying protagonists since Patrick Bateman in American Psycho . Joe Lon spends his free days running the beer, bonded whiskey, and moonshine business that he inherited from his father, a championship pitbull breeder whose cruelty to animals is revered by locals, along with two Negro servants. His sister is a mental case who rubs fecal matter in her hair and watches television all day. His best friend is the town sheriff who lost his leg in Vietnam and who locks up and rapes young, black girls who reject his advances. Most of the time Joe Lon Mackey beats up on himself for abusing his wife who takes care of his two youngest children and wallows in a mixture of past glory and present regrets knowing that his football injuries during high school cost him his future. Once a year Mystic has a rattlesnake roundup that brings alcohol crazed lunatics from all over the Bible Belt to this small town to hunt, kill, and eat snakes of all kinds. There is also a bikini beauty contest and a pep rally the night before the hunt.
All of this makes for an interesting backdrop to a complete emotional and spiritual breakdown of the human soul. By the end of the novel Joe Lon can only find comfort in murder, an activity so devoid of context for him that it makes him giggle. Some have argued that Joe Lon's is a tale of redemption, but I disagree. At no point is there any redemption for Joe Lon, but instead his sister Beeder, and the servant's Negro daughter, Lottie Mae, are the ones who gain some sort of redemption and freedom through the destruction of the oppressive male characters in the story, as does his wife who is freed from his hidden physical abuse. FEAST OF SNAKES is a novel filled with violence, ignorant behavior, rape, castration, arson, sex, creepy Christians, animal cruelty, murder, and fecalphelia.

How do you like your Blue Eyed boy Mr. Death? Reading anything by harry Crewsis like watching your soul being starved, beaten and then gang raped .
    http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Atrium/6790/CREWS.HTML
How do you like your Blue Eyed boy Mr. Death? Harry Eugene Crews was born on June 7, 1935, in Bacon County, Georgia, to Ray and Myrtice, who worked a desperate and indigent living farming in dirt-poor southern Georgia. Ray died at 35 leaving a farm and a family Myrtice was incapable of sustaining by herself. She remarried shortly after, although that marriage carried hardship of its own. Crews wrote: My daddy died of a heart attack when I was 21 months old and my brother was 5. Her second marriage was to a man who might have been a good husband had he not been a brutal drunk. ("Mama Pulled the Load Alone"55) 1 Young as he was when his mother remarried, Crews grew up calling and thinking of him as his daddy, however belligerent and hostile that home life became. Crews suffered the first of two debilitating illnesses in 1940 at the age of 5. The first was a fever accompanied by a painful muscle contraction which caused the muscles in his legs to seize, drawing his heels up against the backs of his legs, forcing him to lie in bed for six weeks until the cramps in his legs subsided and he could be carried around the farm. Gradually, Crews's legs straightened enough so he could haul himself along a fence, working and strengthening the atrophied muscles. Later in life, Crews would ascribe the illness as a physiological manifestation of the psychological stress induced by the tumultuous home life.
