Blake , William. Darwin, Erasmus. The Botanic Garden. A Poem in Two Parts...The Fourth Edition. London: Johnson, 1799. 2 vols, 8vo, xx, 492; xvi, 282, (2) pages. With a frontispiece to each volume, and 22 plates including one double-page and two not listed in the directions to the binder. Old half calf, black labels, a very good copy with an early ink inscription in vol 2. Fourth edition, the first in octavo and the first with the reduced plates engraved by Blake including the Fertilization of Egypt but strangely omitting Tornado. An unaccountably scarce book, the first I have seen; no copy at auction in almost twenty years and only four copies noticed by Essick in the trade in the last ten years (the last some years ago at Bayntun for £900). See Essick, William Blake's Commercial Book Engravings, XXI. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, II, p.88. Charles Darwin
"You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat-catching," Charles Darwin recalled his father once telling him, "and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family." It was an inauspicious beginning for one of history's greatest scientists. Charles Darwin's grandfather was the poet, inventor, doctor and scientist Erasmus Darwin. Erasmus's son Charles planned to become a doctor like his father, but he died from an infection after accidentally cutting himself during an autopsy. So Erasmus's younger son Robert dutifully followed in his older brother's footsteps, and expected his own son, whom he named after his late brother, to practice medicine too. The Charles Darwin who would become famous, however, couldn't stomach dissection. Despite misgivings about his son's lack of direction, Robert Darwin consented to let Charles set sail aboard the Beagle before returning to England to become, as he planned, a country gentleman and parson. (Charles Darwin halfway succeeded he remained a country gentleman the rest of his days.) Darwin considered the voyage the defining experience of his life, and he was right it provided him with the evidence that would forever change biology. Unfortunately, a bite from a poisonous insect during his travels might have been the cause of Darwin's chronic illness in later years. After returning to London, Darwin became an independent scholar, then eventually married and started a family. Legend holds that Darwin happened upon one of science's most important theories while on his visit to the Galapagos Islands. In fact, Darwin devised no great evolutionary theory until after his return to England, and he was not the first person to propose evolution; it was widely discussed at least in scientific circles long before he published any of his theories. The question was, how did evolution occur? The reason Charles Darwin is a household name is because he proposed a viable mechanism for evolution, namely natural selection.

The life and times of Erasmus Darwin With special attention to his possible influence on the work of Charles Darwin and on the conflict between conservatism and modernism From G. de Beer, Royal Navy hydrographer to FitzRoy, Captain of "The Beagle": "My dear sir, I believe my friend Mr. Peacock of Trinity College Cambridge has succeeded in getting a 'savant' for you - a Mr. Darwin, grandson of the well known philosopher and poet......" Overview of the life of Erasmus Darwin Records of the Darwin family can be found in Elston church near Nottingham, north central England dating back as far as 1654. Erasmus was born at Elston Hall in 1731. He was the fourth son of Robert Darwin (1682-1754), a moderately successful lawyer, and Elizabeth Darwin (1702-1797, originally Elizabeth Hill). Elizabeth Darwin was a charismatic, intelligent woman with a fondness for reading and raising pigeons, (which interestingly play a part in the first chapter of "Origin of Species"). Robert Darwin inherited Elston hall and lived comfortably but never dedicated himself to the accumulation of wealth. He retired early to pursue an interest in archeology and enjoy the simple pleasures of country life. Reading between the lines there is some suggestion of occasional impatience with his ever exuberant, energetic and scholastic wife, twenty years younger than he. In one litany he writes: "From a morning that doth shine

Darwin, Erasmus. The Botanic Garden; a Poem, in Two Parts. Part I. Containing the Economy of Vegetation. Part II. The Loves of the Plants. With Philosophical Notes. London, Printed for J. Johnson, 1791. The Botanic Garden , and a book called Phytologia, or the Philosophy of Agriculture and Gardening..., 1800, containing information on the draining of wet lands and construction of ploughs. Originally published anonymously, The Botanic Garden is a poem about nature in which the voice of the "botanic muse" tours plant species describing the sexual system of over 80 plants, giving examples of Linnean classes and orders. It was published in two parts. The second part was originally published in 1789 as "Loves of the Plants." The first part "The Economy of Vegetation" originally appeared in 1791. Darwin plagiarized some poetry of Anna Seward in the first part, believing he was paying her a compliment; apparently they remained friends anyway. He made quite a lot of money on this work; it was reprinted many times. It is a significant work because "elaborate poetic diction is most incongruously applied to crude facts of science" and because it contains some plates from drawings of Henry Fuseli and some engravings by William Blake. Note : In order to follow the career of Erasmus Darwin, I found it necessary to tease a chronology out of the various biographies by Desmond King-Hele. The following is the result of this endeavor. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was born 12 December at Elston (near Nottingham). He was the youngest of 7 seven children, 5 sons and two daughters, all of whom survived from 57 to 92 years. His father, Robert Darwin, was a lawyer. His mother, nee Elizabeth Hall, was 20 years younger than her husband and lived to the age of 95. Entered Edinburgh Medical School, the preeminent medical school in Britain, in the Fall. He returned to Cambridge and took the degree of MB (Bachelor of Medicine) in June 1755. Whether Erasmus Darwin did or did not have the formal degree of MD is not known. Attempted to set up medical practice in Nottingham; it failed. In November Erasmus Darwin moved to Lichfield. A few weeks after his arrival, he, with a novel course of treatment, restored the health of a young gentleman whose death seemed inevitable. This insured his success in the new locale. Married Mary Howard (Polly; died 30 June 1770, aged 30). They had 4 sons and one daughter:

erasmus darwin Back Best known as the grandfather of the biologist Charles Darwin, Erasmus Darwin was a philosopher, poet, scientist and physician of considerable note. Born in Elston, Nottinghamshire in 1731, he was educated at Chesterfield School and the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. When qualified in medicine he practised briefly in Nottingham before moving to Lichfield in Staffordshire where he soon built up a considerable reputation. He was very well informed on all aspects of late 18th-century science and medicine and had advanced ideas on cosmology and evolution. His originality was prolific and he recorded his ideas in verse of a high quality. Erasmus married twice and produced a very large family many of whom went on to be well known. He moved to Derby and died at Breadsall Priory in 1802. The portrait of Darwin is by Joseph Wright of Derby and the original is in the possession of Darwin College, Cambridge.
