    Avram Davidson's Afterlife
The great Muslim theologian, jurist and logician Abu Hamid al-Ghazali wrote a book on The Incoherence of the Philosophers, much of which was devoted to attacking the notion of causation along lines which would be followed several centuries later by David Hume. One of his examples was a demonstration (valid) that there is nothing logically impossible in a corpse happening to ``sit up and write learned volumes in a well-ordered script,'' though he allowed that such occurrences were not ``habitual.'' But habits change: nowadays it almost seems more unusual to not get at least one volume post-mortem from an author's pen or keyboard. Some, indeed, grow far more prolific once the tomb has cut off distractions, though I wouldn't want to have to vouch for the learning or even the penmanship of the late Ms. V. C. Andrews.

THE AVRAM DAVIDSON TREASURY by Avram Davidson Edited by Robert Silverberg and Grania Davis (TOR $26.95 pp 447 1998)
    a review by L J Hurst
Davidson travelled about the Americas. He lived in Mexico, and his stories reflected it. Later he lived in Belize, and used it as the setting of "Manatee Gal, Won't You Come Out Tonight", in which a spirit of the hunted manatees may have hunted the hunter, but with a uncertainty that shows he knew the literary methods of the magical realists. Equally, Davidson knew the problems of the immigrants who had arrived in his own country. The last story from the 1950's, "The Woman Who Thought She Could Read" deals with an immigrant woman who can read the future for her neighbours, and the misery it causes. "The Slovo Stove" from 1985 deals again with immigrants being encouraged by thoughtless notions of citizenship to give up their energy-saving ethnic tools, but made miserable to become Americans. Like another fantasy author, Jack Vance, Davidson was a contributor of short stories to ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE (and both actually ghosted Ellery Queen novels). "The Affair at Lahore Cantonment" won an Edgar in 1961 for best short story. It tells the story behind Kipling's ballad of the hanging of Danny Deever. "Revolver" in 1962, shows how misery ultimately ends by re-inforcing itself in the ghetto, and "Crazy Old Lady" in 1976 shows how the ghetto had been allowed to degenerate further. Both are incredibly good, and according to Davidson's son suggested to Davidson by the conditions in which he was living at the end of his life.

    young vergil
and the wizard by Avram Davidson part 2
This is the last unpublished short story by Avram Davidson, one of America's great literary fantasists. It tells of an event in the youth of the Mage Vergil, the main character in Avram's lifework, the Vergil Magus stories. S everal generations back, someone's cousin had been married to someone's brother-in-law, and not even then a first cousin. But although, even then, Vergil's family had not been related to this other family, it had been thus connected. A very faint sense of this connection had shed upon a certain woman, Emma by name, the last of an earlier generation, a semblance of being some sort of twice-great-aunt. When he was small, he had thought My Emma, as he had also thought of another old woman as My Grandma; Emma lived within what was a half an hour's walk for a small boy; it was of course less than that now, yet he went there less often. Emma's daughters lived in another village now, Emma's son had married again, a termagant, and her husband was her match. And old Emma lived on, and lived with them, the gods save us from such a fate as that! Aunt had paid them a visit, had not felt she'd been made to feel welcomed; her next small gift, carried by the boy "Mariu," had been disparaged by the now-chief woman of old Emma's house, and been deprecated as precisely that: small. As "Mariu" had, in all child innocence, reported. After that, the aunt sent things seldom, and Emma (her humble gifts: two eggs, say, still warm in some straw in a tiny basket she'd made herself) sent things no more at all. Nor, evidently, was allowed to.

    Cyprus was another world.
The city of Paphos might have been designed and built by a Grecian architect dreamy with the drugs called talaquin or mandragora: in marble yellow as unmixed cream, marble pink as sweetmeats, marble the green of pistuquim nuts, veined marble and grained marble, honey-colored and rose-red, the buildings climbed along the hills and frothed among the hollows. Tier after tier of overtall pillars, capitals of a profusion of carvings to make Corinthian seem ascetic, pediments lush with bas-reliefs, four-fold arches at every corner and crossing, statues so huge that they loomed over the housetops, statues so small that whole troops of them flocked and frolicked under every building's eaves, groves and gardens everywhere, fountains playing, water spouting . . .
    Paphos.

    Avram Davidson

He was the autodidact's autodidact; cognoscenti's cognocenti; the polymath's polymath, one who knew the minutiae of freemasonry, heraldry-any number of categories of the arcane, major and minor; front to back; top to bottom. Long before the genre Steam punk was named, he'd already defined the Other Nineteenth Century. And he wrote the most sumptuous prose.
