Letter on Clark Ashton Smith
By Avram Davidson
The work of dedicated people in preparing a work such as this one is fully justifies the original and (as far as I am concerned) still basic meaning of the word amateurs: those who love. I fear there is really little I can say to justify including a communication from me in your Clark Ashton Smith bibliography. Alas! I never knew him in person, and his almost life-long home among the blue oaks of Auburn I have never been able to visit. It seems so long ago that I climbed a crumbling old tenement in the lost land of Zothique to consult an astrologer there. It is not that long ago since I climbed the Hills of Dionysus. I would only that I had ever climbed the hills which lead to Auburn ... where, long after the brute mob ceased to moil for gold, someone for the most part solitary and alone washed a purer ore from the clear streams. Petrarch wrote that "unless the past perished, he could not be safe." He could not, he was not. How can the past perish? when

Price: $12.00 The Boss in the Wall began as a dream by the late Avram Davidson in the 1980sa nightmare, presumably. His longtime collaborator Grania Davis worked with him to carve a novella out of the resulting 600-page draft. Neither novel nor novella found a publisher in Davidson's lifetime. After Davidson's death, Davis revised the novella again, and now, lo, it appears, 122 pages of largish type (including introductions by Peter Beagle and Michael Swanwick), easily read at a sitting. The surprise is that you will want to do just that. The Boss in the Wall still reads like a fragmentary work in progress, but the fragments are highly entertaining: funny, scary, irresistible. The Boss in the Wall follows a motley assemblage of conspiratorial researchers as they track down, in greatest secrecy, all the available information on the title entity, also known as a paper-man, a clicker, a greasy man, and countless other names. The Boss is a particularly repellent bogeyman of Southern folklore, who reputedly lives inside the walls of old houses. (Think those are rats rustling? Think again.) The researchers have a peculiar urgency not customary among folklorists; but then, these folks have a bit more lore to work with than mere dusty archives and Depression-era oral histories. There are photos. And police reports. Contemporary ones. Also, uh, maybe you'd better sit down for this one, some film footage. (The film was badly made. It was jerky and dim and it flickered. It was also totally and horribly convincing.) One of the researchers actually

Avram Davidson unique voice can be heard through this wonderful, thick volume of the best of his shorter fiction. It includes my personal favorites "The Golem," "Or All the Seas with Oysters," and "Revenge of the Cat-Lady" and thirty-five other stories, each introduced by a different person. It's a pity that space did not also permit the inclusion of more than one of his Dr. Eszterhazy stories, nor any of his "Adventures in Unhistory" essays of marvelous erudition, but how can one book contain Avram Davidson? He was in China at the time of the Japanese surrender in September 1945. He continued his formal education after the war but never took a degree. Davidson was in Palestine just before the creation of Israel in May 1948, and apparently served as a medic in the newly-formed Israeli armed forces, and then worked for a while as a shepherd. Davidson began publishing short stories and essays in Orthodox Jewish Life in 1949, and then in Commentary, under the name A. A. Davidson. In July 1954, published its first story by Davidson, "My Boyfriend's Name is Jello." http://www.greenmanreview.com/other.nineteenth.century.htm
Avram Davidson, The Other Nineteenth Century (Tor Books, 2001) In stories, magic books have the decency to advertise themselves. They come with disturbing skin bindings and huge forbidding clasps, and faded gilt lettering warning the reader not to open this one. Sadly, this is real life, and I have been captured by a magic book disguised as a perfectly ordinary hardback: Avram Davidson's The Other Nineteenth Century . It's grabbed me and sunk itself into my brain, and it's not even as if there were any spells. There are only short stories, but they are living stories. They act like simple, well written tales until the end, when every one of them leaps up to surprise and snatch the reader. The first story, "O Brave Old World," shows a world nearly our own. The faces in it grow increasingly familiar, until by the end a history that never was seems inevitable and true. "The Singular Incident of the Dog on the Beach" features some familiar characters, on loan from another imagination. "Summon the Watch" tells of the heroism of two old ladies who are just unimportant enough to have lived unnoticed by history. Avram Davidson plainly studied the history of the real nineteenth century, and there are several stories here seemingly designed to send readers themselves on research trips. "One Morning With Samuel, Dorothy and William" features the heartbreak of broken inspiration. "Traveler From an Antique Land" and "The Deed of the Deft-Footed Dragon" give a new view on two scandals of the day, one now largely forgotten and one famous. "The Lineaments of Gratified Desire" might be described as an almost-war story, and captures carefully a moment on its way to changing history. These mysteries were closed, but the last turn of these tales opens them up again.

Avram Davidson was better known for his science fiction, but he also wrote a considerable amount for Jewish journals that were more autobiographical vignettes than short stories. The first part of this book is a collection of these pieces dating from his experiences during World War II to his death in 1993, with an editorial introduction and history of each short story. The second part of this book is a Symposium of science fiction and fantasy writers paying tribute to the great man. Jack Dann, Peter S. Beagle and Barry Maltzberg, along with other writers each relate their own tale of remembrance for Davidson. He was an eccentric man who never strayed far from his Jewish roots, and the third section is a collection of his later writings that have a strong religious theme.
